Steve Smith Sets New Record for Runs by a Visiting Batsman at Lord's

Historic Achievement at Lord's
On the opening day of the World Test Championship final against South Africa, Australia's Steve Smith broke the record for the most runs scored by a visiting batsman at Lord's Cricket Ground. He surpassed the previous record of 575 runs held by Australian great Warren Bardsley. Additionally, Smith's performance allowed him to eclipse the legendary Don Bradman, who had accumulated 551 runs in eight innings at this iconic venue.
The 36-year-old Smith has a personal best of 215 at Lord's, achieved during the second Ashes Test in 2015. Throughout his career at this ground, he has recorded two centuries and three half-centuries. His innings proved crucial as Australia found themselves in a precarious position at 67 for four, thanks to the aggressive bowling from South African seamers Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada. Smith formed a vital partnership with all-rounder Beau Webster, helping stabilize the innings.
In a tactical move, Aiden Markram was brought into the bowling attack and quickly made an impact. He lured Smith into an outside-off drive, resulting in a thick edge that was caught by Marco Jansen at slip. The catch was not straightforward, as Jansen fumbled the ball twice before securing it on his third attempt, showcasing the pressure of the moment.
Markram, often underestimated as a bowler, proved his worth by taking a key wicket, sending the South African team into celebration, fully aware of the significance of Smith's dismissal in the context of the match.
