Bhubaneswar/Baleshwar: Following the rescue of five orangutans from a forest in Baleshwar district, Odisha, authorities have initiated a joint investigation involving the Special Task Force (STF) and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB). This inquiry aims to uncover the potential involvement of an international wildlife smuggling network behind the sudden appearance of these animals.

Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia, the state's Forest and Environment Minister, announced that the investigation will focus on how the orangutans arrived in Baleshwar, who transported them, and the individuals involved in these activities.

Due to the high market value of orangutans—estimated between Rs 20-25 lakh internationally—it is suspected that they were illegally smuggled from their native habitats in Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly from the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra.

The rescued orangutans are currently in quarantine at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, where a team of veterinarians is monitoring their health. The minister stated that the animals are stable and being kept in a climate-controlled environment.

Inspector General Himansu Lal of the Odisha STF confirmed that a team led by a senior officer has already commenced the investigation in Baleshwar.

STF DIG Vishal Singh mentioned that they are in the early stages of gathering local data and are coordinating with the central government’s wildlife division to determine if similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in the country.

The STF has reached out to the district SP and DFO to gather information regarding the rescue of the orangutans from a casuarina forest in the Bichitrapur area of Bhograi block.

In the meantime, forest officials and local police are canvassing the area to gather more information about the incident.

Villagers first noticed the young orangutans clinging to trees on Tuesday morning and promptly alerted the forest department, according to Baleshwar Divisional Forest Officer Prateek Prakash Indalkar.

Witnesses reported seeing a black SUV near the forest on Monday night, which was also captured on CCTV footage.

A local police officer noted that tracking down the SUV and its owner could provide crucial leads regarding the arrival of the baby orangutans.

The Odisha forest department has reached out to zoos nationwide to check if any orangutans are missing from their facilities.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from airports, ports, and major railway stations, and have contacted the Coast Guard to investigate any potential transportation of the animals via water routes.

Officials at Nandankanan Zoological Park reported that three of the five orangutans are male and two are female, all aged between six months and one year, standing approximately one to one-and-a-half feet tall.

The animals are currently receiving food and oral rehydration solutions.

Nandankanan Zoological Park has a designated enclosure for orangutans, which has been vacant since the death of a 41-year-old orangutan in 2019. A female orangutan was previously transferred from Pune Zoo to Nandankanan in 2003.

The state government has requested permission from the Central Zoo Authority to house the five baby orangutans at Nandankanan Zoological Park.

Reflecting on India thirty years ago, we remember waiting for the postman. A letter would take about fifteen days to reach its destination, followed by a response. Those letters carried emotions, anticipation, and a sense of connection. Nowadays, messages sent via WhatsApp arrive in an instant, but where is the sentiment? In the past, wedding invitations were delivered personally, with people walking from house to house, sharing yellow rice as a gesture of warmth. Today, a single message can send e-invites to thousands. While tasks have become easier, the warmth of relationships has diminished. The stark reality of the digital age is that while it has eliminated physical distances, it has created an odd emotional distance even among those who are close. In a household of four, each person may be engrossed in their own mobile device, connected to someone thousands of kilometers away, yet lacking the time to converse with their own family members.

However, we must also acknowledge the significant positive aspects of this transformation. The digital age has truly democratized communication. Today, even the poorest individual can convey their thoughts directly to the Prime Minister via their mobile phone. Farmers no longer need to visit the market to check crop prices; they can do so from their fields. Our daughters, once confined to the home, are now pursuing online education to become doctors and engineers. During the pandemic, when schools were closed, digital technology saved our children's education. A laborer can now transfer money to his mother’s account in seconds, a task that once took months. Government benefits are now directly deposited into beneficiaries' accounts, eliminating middlemen. This is a monumental change.

The educational transformation witnessed by the current generation is unprecedented. We began our learning with slates and chalk, often using the same book for an entire year. Today, children have access to entire libraries on their mobile devices. They can search for anything on Google or listen to lectures from the world’s best educators on YouTube. Yet, this also presents a challenge. While information is abundant, the depth of knowledge seems to be diminishing. Children can quickly find answers on Google, but the habit of retaining information and reflecting on it is fading. Previously, we memorized multiplication tables; now we rely on calculators. While convenience has increased, memory and effort have decreased. Therefore, it is crucial for today’s educators and parents to teach children to be masters of technology, not its slaves.

This digital era has also transformed our villages. Today, young people are creating reels on Instagram, running YouTube channels, and earning substantial incomes. This represents new employment opportunities. However, alongside this, there is a rapid spread of indecency, vulgarity, and negative influences. We can use WhatsApp groups and Facebook to raise awareness. Technology is merely a tool; it can be both beneficial and harmful. Like a knife, it can be used to cut vegetables or cause harm. It is up to us how we choose to utilize it.

In conclusion, change is inevitable. Those who resist change fall behind. Our generation has witnessed the journey from bullock carts to airplanes, from letters to video calls. This is our strength. We must blend our experiences with new technologies. We need to teach our children that the mobile phone is their servant, not their master. Set aside two hours a day without mobile devices, spend time with family, visit the fields, and converse with elders. Embrace technology, but do not abandon your culture, simplicity, and values. If we hold onto our roots in this digital age, we will remain at the forefront globally; otherwise, we risk being alone and hollow despite having technology at our disposal. This is the most significant message of the digital age.

New Delhi: A coalition of nine employee associations from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has reached out to Chairperson V Narayanan, requesting clarification regarding the agency's plans to transfer its manufacturing and operational roles to private companies.

In their letter dated September 4, the associations expressed concerns about ISRO's future responsibilities and the potential impact on current employees and future hiring.

"While private involvement in specific commercial activities can coexist with a robust, publicly owned ISRO, we cannot accept a policy that relegates ISRO to merely a research and development entity, while the actual production and operation of launch vehicles are handed over to private entities," the letter stated.

The letter referenced comments made by Pawan Goenka, chairperson of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), who indicated that ISRO would eventually cease to manufacture launch vehicles, leaving that task to the private sector or public sector undertakings.

The employee groups noted that Goenka's statements have not been followed by any formal communication from the Department of Space, detailing the approved policy, its legal framework, implementation timeline, or its effects on the current workforce and future recruitment.

"The technology developed by ISRO is a national treasure. Its transfer should be conducted transparently and responsibly, considering strategic, safety, and employment factors, rather than being communicated through media reports," the letter emphasized.

Additionally, the associations raised questions about whether ISRO will continue to handle the design, development, integration, testing, and launching of PSLV, LVM3, SSLV, and future vehicles.

They also inquired about how the proposed changes would affect the sanctioned workforce, existing job vacancies, recruitment schedules, and the onboarding of scientific, technical, administrative, and industrial personnel across all ISRO centers.

New Delhi: A recent study has uncovered that the laughter, grunts, and whimpers of chimpanzees may lead to the development of unique vocal patterns or 'dialects' among young chimps.

Published in the journal PLOS One, the research offers fresh insights into how different vocal patterns among various chimp populations arise and evolve, challenging the notion that their calls are solely dictated by genetics.

The study involved analyzing the vocalizations of infant and juvenile chimpanzees from two distinct populations located at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in Zambia and Gombe National Park in Tanzania.

The researchers noted, "We could distinguish between sites for all call types, indicating the existence of dialects within the chimpanzee vocal repertoire."

As the chimpanzees matured, the differences in vocalizations between the groups became increasingly evident, indicating that vocal behavior continues to evolve during early development.

"Understanding the development of communication in early life is crucial for grasping animal behavior. Our results demonstrate that chimpanzee vocalizations are not merely fixed at birth but evolve as young chimps engage with their social and ecological surroundings," stated Kassandra Giragosian, the lead researcher and a doctoral candidate at Queen Mary University of London.

The researchers highlighted that, in early human evolution, vocal behaviors were largely similar across populations. However, as evolution progressed, these acoustic differences became more pronounced.

Similar to humans who develop regional accents, the study found that young chimpanzees from different communities exhibit subtly distinct vocal patterns.

Interestingly, some population-specific vocal traits were already evident in infancy, while others developed during the juvenile stage.

This developmental pattern suggests that social interactions, environmental factors, and other non-genetic influences play a significant role in shaping how young chimpanzees communicate.

The findings provide the first evidence that chimpanzees develop distinct vocal differences or dialects as they grow, contributing to the understanding that primate communication is more adaptable and dynamic than previously thought.

Moreover, the research offers a new lens through which to examine the processes that influence vocal behavior in other species, focusing on how communication evolves over time rather than merely comparing adult populations.

New Delhi: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has indicated that the current El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific are likely to escalate into a significantly strong event, potentially lasting until February 2027.

This phenomenon is expected to greatly influence rainfall and temperature trends, leading to increased risks of floods, droughts, and extreme heat.

In a recent statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo remarked, "El Niño, which translates to 'boy child' in Spanish, can have devastating effects on communities and economies worldwide."

She added, "We are already witnessing disruptions and destruction from droughts and floods, and these effects are anticipated to worsen as El Niño strengthens."

These projections from the WMO follow a forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which stated that El Niño conditions might continue until February of the following year.

El Niño is one of the three phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate phenomenon marked by variations in sea temperatures across the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, along with atmospheric fluctuations.

While El Niño typically causes global warming, its counterpart, La Niña, usually results in cooling effects. ENSO also includes a neutral phase.

In India, El Niño conditions generally lead to reduced rainfall, which was confirmed by the IMD's report on August 31, indicating a 16 percent rainfall deficit across the country for that month.

Additionally, August 2023 was recorded as the hottest August in India since 1901, partly attributed to El Niño.

For September, the IMD predicts rainfall to be below 91 percent of the long-term average (LPA), which is approximately 167.9 mm based on historical data from 1971 to 2020.

Although the IMD has not yet released a post-monsoon seasonal forecast, the intensifying El Niño suggests that winter temperatures may rise, further complicating the situation as India is already experiencing warmer winters.

A recent analysis by Climate Trends, a climate research organization based in Delhi, indicates that winters in northern India are becoming shorter, with warming trends in February and March becoming increasingly common.

The study highlights that February has seen the most rapid warming, with temperatures increasing by 0.69 degrees Celsius per decade, while March and April have also experienced significant rises of 0.58 degrees Celsius and 0.66 degrees Celsius, respectively.

These temperature shifts pose a risk of severe heat stress on Rabi crops, particularly wheat, as they coincide with critical growth stages.

"These temperature changes coincide with the reproductive and grain-filling stages of wheat and are already impacting production in key wheat-growing areas," the study concluded.

New Delhi/Raurkela: Researchers from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Rourkela have been granted a patent for a cutting-edge hybrid energy-storage system aimed at enhancing the efficiency and longevity of batteries utilized in electric vehicles, as confirmed by officials.

As one of the largest automobile markets globally, India is witnessing a surge in electric vehicle adoption, driven by dwindling petroleum resources and government initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) schemes.

Monalisa Pattnaik, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at NIT-Rourkela, explained that electric vehicles rely on a battery pack, which is a substantial, rechargeable energy-storage system composed of numerous interconnected cells. These battery packs often face challenges such as low power density, limited cycle life, and high thermal stress due to rapid current fluctuations.

These issues are particularly pronounced in urban environments where vehicles frequently start and stop, leading to sudden speed changes that can harm battery cells. To address these challenges, battery packs are commonly paired with high-power-density supercapacitors, forming a hybrid energy-storage system (HESS), according to Pattnaik.

Supercapacitors store energy electrostatically at the interface of electrodes and electrolytes, allowing for rapid charge and discharge cycles, and delivering power levels significantly higher than traditional batteries. They also boast an impressive cycle life, often exceeding one million charge-discharge cycles with minimal degradation. This capability allows supercapacitors to manage sudden demands for power during acceleration, deceleration, and regenerative braking, thus alleviating stress on the battery and extending its lifespan.

Pattnaik noted that battery packs and supercapacitors can be connected in three configurations: passive, semi-active, and active. In a passive setup, the two components are directly linked, which limits the supercapacitor's responsiveness to power demand changes. Active connections involve separate electronic converters for managing the battery and supercapacitor, but this adds complexity and reduces efficiency. To tackle these issues, the NIT-R researchers have created a hybrid energy-storage architecture designed to shield the battery from sudden power surges, optimize supercapacitor energy use, and minimize component count, thereby simplifying the system.

The architecture comprises three key components: a single converter that connects both the battery and supercapacitor to the vehicle's electrical system, an inductor positioned in the electrical pathway, and a unified control system to regulate power flow. Each component serves a distinct purpose. The single converter reduces the number of switches and control elements, simplifying the design. The inductor safeguards against abrupt current surges, enhancing battery longevity. The unified control system manages both acceleration and deceleration, reducing hardware needs, according to Pattnaik.

The researchers have conducted tests on this hybrid system under conditions involving sudden braking, rapid acceleration, and deceleration. The system maintained a stable 48 V voltage, facilitated smooth battery current transitions, and enabled the supercapacitor to efficiently manage sudden power fluctuations. "Our design is highly optimized for low-voltage electric vehicle platforms operating within the 24 V to 60 V DC range, including urban light electric vehicles such as electric scooters, motorcycles, e-rickshaws, cargo tricycles, and utility vehicles for campuses or industries," Pattnaik added.

New Delhi, Sept 2: Given Assam's pivotal location as a gateway to the Northeast, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is enhancing its surveillance and intelligence operations through advanced technology and community outreach to combat narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, and other cross-border crimes.

This renewed emphasis on border security is crucial for Assam, where the rise in narcotics trafficking and organized crime has raised alarms. Security forces are increasingly targeting routes that link the Northeast with neighboring nations to thwart criminal organizations from taking advantage of the region's geographical connections.

Bangalore: In a significant move, Meta has removed numerous advertisements after the Indian government highlighted a concerning trend of Facebook and Instagram ads utilizing sexually explicit content to entice users into downloading malware. This malware is designed to steal banking information and potentially drain users' accounts. According to government statistics, India suffered nearly $2.4 billion in cyber fraud losses in 2025, as scammers increasingly exploit the country's growing digital payment landscape.

The government reported that ads on Facebook and Instagram, operating under names like "Night Play" and "Kyss," were directing users to phishing sites. They noted a surge in financial scams involving what they termed "malicious Android applications disguised as pornography apps." After the government issued its advisory, Reuters discovered at least 39 such ads still active, many featuring sexually explicit video thumbnails to draw in clicks.

Following the alert from Reuters, Meta promptly removed all flagged ads. This action came after the news outlet sought comments regarding the advisory. This marks the first report of Meta's ad removal in response to the government's concerns. The policies of the US tech giant explicitly state that ads "must not contain adult nudity and sexual activity" and prohibit advertisements that employ deceptive or misleading tactics, including those aimed at scamming users.

This incident marks the second occasion in recent weeks where India has expressed worries about financial fraud on a significant tech platform. Previously, it was reported that the government instructed Google to deactivate hundreds of accounts on its Firebase platform after discovering that criminals were using it to impersonate major banks.

New Delhi: WhatsApp is currently trialing methods to help users verify their age as part of its compliance with forthcoming regulations in India, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP).
