WhatsApp's proposed username feature is facing scrutiny from the Indian government, which has raised concerns about potential increases in online fraud and impersonation. The messaging platform has been granted additional time to respond to the government's notice and has assured that the feature will not be rolled out until discussions are complete. This article delves into the implications of the feature, the government's stance, and the measures WhatsApp is taking to ensure user safety. Stay informed about the latest developments in this ongoing situation.

WhatsApp's Username Feature Under Review

New Delhi: WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has been granted an extension to respond to the government's concerns regarding its proposed 'username' feature. The platform has assured officials that it will not implement this feature in India until discussions are finalized.

The messaging service has received an additional three days to reply to a government notice regarding this controversial feature, which allows users to communicate without disclosing their phone numbers.

Last week, the government issued a notice to Meta, expressing concerns that the username feature could lead to increased online fraud, phishing, and impersonation attacks.

The government has instructed WhatsApp to halt the feature's rollout until consultations are satisfactorily completed.

Sources indicate that WhatsApp has been given until the end of the week to submit its response to the IT Ministry, extending the original deadline.

WhatsApp has also committed to not launching the feature until discussions are concluded.

A Meta team met with IT Ministry officials last Friday following the notice.

The notice requested Meta to clarify why actions should not be taken under the IT Act regarding the potential for increased cybercrime due to the new feature.

The government reminded Meta that, as a major social media intermediary, WhatsApp must adhere to due diligence requirements under the IT Act.

An email inquiry sent to WhatsApp did not receive an immediate response.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp stated that the username feature is not yet active and will be gradually introduced later this year.

"To prevent impersonation, we have reserved usernames for high-profile individuals, including public figures and verified accounts, ensuring they can only be claimed by their rightful owners," the spokesperson explained.

Users will still need a phone number to access WhatsApp, and the company has implemented several protective measures against scams related to usernames.

"Other users must know the exact username to initiate contact. We will restrict how many new users an account can reach out to and block repeated attempts to guess usernames, along with systems to identify and eliminate impersonation and abuse patterns," WhatsApp stated.

The platform will indicate whether a first-time sender is a new account, a contact, a mutual group member, or from another country before users decide to respond.

"When the feature is available, if someone messages you for the first time using your username, we will inform you if they are a new account, a contact, share group memberships, or are located in a different country, allowing you to choose whether to reply," WhatsApp added.

Following the notice to WhatsApp, the IT Ministry also reached out to Telegram and Signal, questioning their existing username features and how they are addressing fraud and impersonation risks. While WhatsApp boasts 500 million users in India, Telegram's user base is significantly smaller.

In recent days, both Meta and Telegram have faced regulatory scrutiny on various issues.

The government issued a serious notice to Meta regarding child sexual abuse material in Instagram ads, while Telegram was directed to address the widespread sharing of pirated films and other content on its platform.

New Delhi: Authorities are examining WhatsApp's upcoming username feature due to worries about its potential for misuse, particularly in impersonation and fraudulent activities, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The government plans to evaluate the risks associated with this feature, which has raised significant concerns following its announcement by the Meta-owned messaging service.

This new functionality could enable users to create usernames that mimic those of legitimate organizations, thereby increasing the risk of impersonation and fraud, which could negatively impact public safety and societal trust.

Officials emphasized that there will be no compromises made regarding national security or public safety.

WhatsApp has revealed that the username feature will allow users to communicate without needing to share their phone numbers.

Innovative Wound Care Solution

Raurkela: A team of researchers from the National Institute of Technology, Raurkela (NITR) has introduced an advanced smart wound dressing that alleviates pain during dressing changes, minimizes infection risks, and accelerates healing. This innovative solution serves as a cost-effective alternative to traditional cotton gauze. The project, spearheaded by Prof. Prasoon Kumar, an assistant professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, tackles a significant drawback of standard cotton gauze, which tends to stick to wounds, potentially harming newly formed tissue upon removal and heightening infection risks.

The smart dressing integrates chitosan-coated cotton gauze with a nanofibrous layer created through electrospinning, infused with curcumin, a natural antimicrobial agent. This layer is strategically placed between the wound and the gauze, reducing direct contact and making dressing changes less painful while safeguarding newly formed tissue. Additionally, the nanofibrous layer ensures a sustained release of curcumin, which helps maintain a sterile wound environment, inhibits bacterial growth, and fosters tissue regeneration. Prof. Kumar noted, “Our laboratory experiments demonstrated that this dressing significantly lessens wound adhesion compared to traditional cotton gauze. The continuous release of curcumin offers antibacterial protection, while the nanofibrous layer promotes cellular growth and tissue healing.”

Designed with straightforward, scalable, and economical fabrication techniques, the smart dressing is projected to cost between INR 50-60 for a 10 cm × 4 m size, compared to approximately INR 30 for conventional cotton gauze. The research findings have been published in Emergent Materials, and the team is looking to patent their technology while seeking partnerships with industry players to initiate clinical trials and facilitate commercialization.

This change aims to enhance privacy and security for its vast user base. Users will be able to register their usernames, which will serve as their primary mode of communication, keeping their phone numbers private. The feature is expected to roll out later this year, with global registrations starting soon. This initiative follows the recent leadership change at WhatsApp, as the company seeks to leverage its extensive reach and monetize the platform. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!

WhatsApp's New Privacy Feature

New Delhi: WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta, is preparing to launch a groundbreaking feature designed to enhance user convenience while addressing privacy issues.

This innovative feature will separate the messaging service from users' mobile numbers, enabling them to communicate online without revealing their personal information. This change aims to bolster privacy for billions of users, allowing them to connect through unique WhatsApp usernames.

This new approach represents a significant departure from the existing system that relies on mobile numbers, as users will now be able to connect using registered usernames. The company has already initiated global reservations for these usernames, allowing millions worldwide to obtain a dedicated username. This username will be crucial when WhatsApp rolls out the feature later this year.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, emphasized that this upcoming feature is "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number."

"A username allows you to connect with someone on WhatsApp without disclosing your phone number. You can choose your own username, which doesn’t need to match your handle on any other platform," the company stated on Monday.

"To find you, people will need to know your exact username. You can easily update your username directly within WhatsApp," it added.

This ambitious initiative follows the appointment of Indian fintech entrepreneur Kunal Shah as the head of WhatsApp, as the company aims to leverage the platform's extensive global reach and monetize the app.

Username Registration Process

With this new feature, users will be required to select a unique username that will serve as their primary communication method. For added privacy, they can opt to stop sharing their phone numbers and instead connect through the usernames registered on their devices.

WhatsApp indicates that users can create their usernames, which should be between 3 and 35 characters long.

Users will have the ability to set their "username key" to maintain control over their contact list.

Once the feature is activated, your phone number will remain hidden when messaging someone or a business for the first time.

WhatsApp users will need to choose a unique and distinct username. If they encounter difficulties, a username generator will be available to assist them.

Reports suggest that the registration process for usernames could commence as soon as this week.

With nearly three billion users, WhatsApp aims to facilitate global registrations throughout the year and launch the feature by the end of the year.

Users will receive notifications in their apps when the feature becomes available in their region.

According to WhatsApp, reserving a personalized username will take only a few seconds.

WhatsApp's New Privacy Feature

New Delhi: WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has unveiled a significant new feature aimed at enhancing user privacy by allowing global reservations of usernames.

Starting Monday, users will have the opportunity to create and reserve their usernames ahead of the feature's full rollout within the app later this year.

Once the reservation process is live, users will receive notifications through the app. WhatsApp emphasizes that selecting a unique username is essential, as it should only be known to those you wish to connect with.

According to WhatsApp, "A username allows you to connect with others on the platform without disclosing your phone number. You can choose any username, and it doesn't need to align with your handles on other platforms."

This feature is fundamentally about privacy rather than serving as a social media identifier. There will be no public directory or suggestions, meaning individuals must know your exact username to initiate contact for the first time.

WhatsApp reassures users that their phone numbers remain secure. Instead of sharing digits, users can provide their unique usernames. The absence of a public directory means that only those who know the exact username can find you. Additionally, users can modify their usernames directly within the app.

To further enhance security, WhatsApp allows users to establish a "username key". This means that anyone attempting to message you for the first time via your username will require this key to reach you, adding an extra layer of security. Users can change this key whenever they wish.

In related news, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Kunal Shah, the founder of CRED, will take over as WhatsApp's global CEO. Furthermore, Meta is investing approximately $900 million (around ₹8,550 crore) into the fintech company CRED.

Milestones in India's Self-Reliance

New Delhi: During his recent radio program 'Mann Ki Baat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significant strides India has made towards self-sufficiency, particularly highlighting the inaugural flight of the domestically produced C-295 aircraft and the successful test of the indigenous Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile.

In June alone, Modi pointed out, the nation has made remarkable advancements in the aviation industry.

He mentioned that the C-295 aircraft is being manufactured in India, stating, "A total of 40 such aircraft are currently under construction in our country, which is empowering MSMEs and the aerospace sector."

This initiative is also expected to create numerous job opportunities.

The first made-in-India C-295 military transport aircraft successfully took to the skies on June 10.

The Indian Air Force is set to acquire 56 C-295 transport aircraft at an estimated cost of around Rs 21,935 crore.

Of these, Tata Advanced Systems Limited will assemble 40 units in collaboration with Airbus at a facility located in Vadodara.

Modi also mentioned other achievements in June that instill pride among citizens.

He shared his experience at a Navy event in Kolkata, where INS Dunagiri, INS Shanshak, and INS Agrya were officially inducted into the Indian Navy's fleet, all of which were designed and manufactured domestically.

Additionally, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested an indigenous Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) in June.

He remarked, "From the seas to the skies, India is becoming increasingly secure and self-reliant."

The LRLACM flight test was conducted off the coast of Odisha on June 15.

This missile is entirely developed in India, with all subsystems created by various DRDO laboratories and industry partners.

During his address, Modi expressed gratitude to citizens for adhering to his request to refrain from purchasing gold, traveling abroad, and opting for carpooling due to the situation in West Asia.

"I appreciate every citizen for not only supporting my appeal but also for actively cooperating in various ways," he stated.

He also encouraged farmers to practice chemical-free farming, safeguard their lands, and maximize the use of natural fertilizers.

Modi noted that Indian culture is spreading globally, mentioning a group in the Dominican Republic, where the Indian community is small, that has formed a team called 'Brahmakamal Dominicana.'

"They study Vedic literature and learn to chant Vedic mantras without formal training, relying on audio recordings for correct pronunciation," he explained.

The Prime Minister also addressed the misconceptions surrounding the Hargila bird in Assam, which plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.

"In some areas of Assam, Hargila was seen as a bad omen, leading to the destruction of trees housing their nests," he noted, adding that biologist Purnima Devi Barman took steps to change these deep-rooted beliefs.

"She engaged with women to share scientific facts, and gradually, they joined the campaign, transforming the perception of the bird into a symbol of the villages," he said.

Modi highlighted the increasing interest among youth in pursuing sports as a career, mentioning the launch of the 'Nagaland Baby League' for football, which allows children aged 5 to 12 to participate.

"This initiative not only inspires them but also helps them develop their skills and identity," he remarked.

Discussing the root bridges of Meghalaya, Modi stated that India is seeking to include these structures in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Network.

He acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change to these bridges but praised the local community for their commitment to preserving this natural heritage.

"Currently, residents maintain over 120 root bridges, with some teams conducting annual inspections and others establishing nurseries to support the surrounding ecosystem," he noted.

Modi also commended women from Biaora in Madhya Pradesh for their initiative to clean up plastic waste in their community.

Rather than waiting for external help, they took the lead in collecting plastic waste and empty bottles, which eventually led to the creation of eco-bricks.

"These eco-bricks are now being used to enhance public spaces. In Rajgarh, hundreds of kilograms of plastic have been recycled and repurposed, transforming pollution into beauty, thanks to these women's efforts," he stated.

Looking ahead to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in September, he mentioned that many have reached out to him suggesting he address topics related to Ganesh Utsav, even though the festival is still some time away.

He explained that the crafting of Ganesh idols begins well in advance, activating idol makers and those involved in the trade.

"I urge everyone to ensure that the Ganpati Bappa idol installed in your home or community is made from local soil and crafted by our own artisans," he emphasized.

"I also encourage idol makers to prioritize clay idols and ask buyers to verify the materials and origin of the idols they purchase," he concluded.

Apple has recently raised the prices of its MacBook and iPad models by 20% to 42%, primarily due to soaring memory chip costs. The 14-inch MacBook Pro now starts at Rs 2,99,900, while the iPad Air's base model has jumped to Rs 1,19,900. This price adjustment reflects significant shifts in the semiconductor market driven by AI data center demands. Experts suggest that while this may deter some consumers, it could also push buyers towards premium models. Read on to learn more about the implications of these changes for Apple and its customers.

Significant Price Increases for Apple Products

New Delhi: Apple has announced a substantial increase in the prices of its MacBook and iPad models, with hikes ranging from 20% to 42% compared to their initial launch prices worldwide, including in India. This adjustment is primarily attributed to the rising costs of memory chips.

According to the updated pricing on Apple's India website, the MacBook Pro featuring the M5 series chip has seen a price increase of approximately 20%. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip now retails for Rs 2,99,900, up from its original price of Rs 2,49,900.

The iPad Air has experienced an even more significant price jump, with the base model of the 13-inch iPad Air increasing by 41.22% to Rs 1,19,900 from Rs 84,900.

Neil Shah, Co-founder and VP of Research at Counterpoint Research, noted that Apple’s price adjustments for the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Pro Wi-Fi reflect a major shift in the cost structure of the consumer and enterprise PC and tablet markets, driven by escalating semiconductor chip prices.

In a statement, Apple acknowledged the unprecedented challenges facing the consumer electronics sector. They highlighted that the rapid growth of AI data centers has led to an extraordinary demand for memory and storage components, resulting in significant price increases.

"We have shielded our customers from these increases so far, but we have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices on a number of products, including today’s increases for iPad and Mac. We know this is not welcome news, and we are working tirelessly to find solutions," the statement read.

The trend of rising prices for consumer electronics is widespread, with many products seeing increases of 40% or more.

Memory manufacturers are increasingly directing their production towards AI data centers, which has constrained availability and driven up costs in the consumer electronics sector.

Micron, a leading memory chip supplier, reported gross margins of 86%, a significant rise from 15% just a year ago.

"Apple, known for its robust supply chain management, has begun passing on higher component costs to consumers, indicating that pricing pressures have reached a level that even the most sophisticated strategies cannot fully mitigate," stated Prabhu Ram, VP of Industry Research Group at CyberMedia Research.

Shah mentioned that Apple had managed to hold off on price increases for at least two quarters, protecting its customers from inflation, but has now reached a point where it can no longer absorb the rising costs.

"The unprecedented growth of AI infrastructure has altered the semiconductor supply chain, creating an insatiable demand for DRAM, NAND, and Compute chips, which is not being met by production capacity as AI infrastructure takes precedence. We believe this situation will persist for at least the next two years," he added.

Shah also pointed out that the timing of these price hikes is not ideal, as Apple is set to launch its revamped on-device Apple Intelligence later this year, which will require significant memory and computing power.

"This could potentially impact overall demand for Apple products in the upcoming months. However, it may also benefit Apple, particularly for customers looking to upgrade who may prefer to invest in a higher-end model rather than settle for a lower configuration. This shift could lead to a stronger focus on premium products as consumers seek maximum value for their investment," Shah concluded.

Oracle Corporation has announced a significant reduction in its workforce, cutting around 21,000 jobs over the past year, largely due to the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies. As the company continues to invest in AI infrastructure to meet customer demands, it faces restructuring costs of approximately $1.8 billion. The latest figures reveal a workforce of 141,000, down from 162,000, highlighting the impact of AI on employment within the tech sector. This article explores the implications of these layoffs and how AI is reshaping workforce requirements across major technology companies.

Oracle's Workforce Reduction Linked to AI Technologies

New Delhi: Oracle Corporation, a prominent player in the tech industry, has reported a significant reduction in its workforce, cutting approximately 21,000 jobs in the last year. The company attributes part of this decline to the increasing implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

According to its latest annual financial report, Oracle's total workforce has decreased to 141,000 full-time employees as of May 31, down from 162,000 the previous year.

The company noted in its filing, "The integration and use of AI technologies in our operations have led to, and may continue to lead to, workforce reductions."

This downsizing has incurred restructuring expenses estimated at around $1.8 billion.

Despite these layoffs, Oracle is heavily investing in AI infrastructure and data centers to cater to the rising demand from clients, including OpenAI.

The firm is enhancing its AI capabilities amid fierce competition from other major cloud service providers.

As of late May, Oracle's workforce comprised about 49,000 employees in the United States and approximately 92,000 abroad.

Additionally, the current employee count has dipped slightly below the numbers recorded before the company's acquisition of Cerner, a firm specializing in electronic health records, in 2022.

These statistics highlight the extent of the layoffs that have occurred within Oracle in recent months.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced indicating that Oracle had initiated global layoffs, with affected employees receiving termination notices via early-morning emails.

Many employees shared their experiences on social media, revealing that these notifications began arriving around 6 am local time in the US.

This recent filing serves as a clear indication of how the adoption of AI is transforming workforce dynamics within leading technology firms.

A concerning trend has emerged in India post-COVID, with a significant rise in hip arthritis and avascular necrosis (AVN) cases among younger adults. Experts at the DELHI HIP 360 Conference highlighted the urgent need for awareness and early diagnosis, as many patients overlook initial symptoms. The conference discussed advancements in hip surgeries and the impact of steroid use during the pandemic. With a projected increase in demand for hip replacements, the emphasis on preventive care and timely consultations is crucial to avoid severe joint damage and maintain mobility.

Emerging Orthopaedic Concerns in India

In New Delhi, a troubling trend has surfaced in the wake of the pandemic, with a notable increase in cases of hip arthritis and avascular necrosis (AVN) reported by healthcare professionals across India. This painful condition, which arises from a disruption in blood flow to the hip bone, is increasingly affecting younger and middle-aged individuals.

During the recent 2nd DELHI HIP 360 Conference at Crowne Plaza New Delhi, experts highlighted that the aftermath of COVID-19 has led to accelerated damage to hip joints, resulting in a higher demand for Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgeries nationwide.

Organized by the Delhi Orthopaedic Association in collaboration with the Indian Arthroplasty Association, the conference gathered top orthopaedic surgeons, arthroplasty specialists, and medical residents from across the country to discuss advancements in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), complex hip reconstruction, robotic-assisted surgery, and the management of post-COVID hip complications.

Participants noted a significant rise in patients experiencing severe hip pain, limping, stiffness, and mobility issues due to AVN and early-stage hip arthritis.

Recent global studies have indicated a link between high-dose or prolonged steroid use during COVID-19 treatment and the development of osteonecrosis of the femoral head, particularly in patients with pre-existing vascular or metabolic conditions.

Medical professionals observed that AVN, which was once primarily seen in older adults or those with trauma, is now increasingly affecting individuals in their 30s and 40s.

Often, delayed diagnosis allows the condition to progress unnoticed until the hip joint collapses, necessitating total hip replacement surgery to restore mobility and improve quality of life.

Dr. L Tomar, the organizing chairman of DELHI HIP 360 and Director of the Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Department at Max Hospital, Delhi, stated, “We are witnessing a 40% increase in hip replacement surgeries among younger patients. While steroids were crucial during the pandemic, their indiscriminate or prolonged use has been linked to a rise in osteonecrosis and early degenerative changes in the hip joint.”

He further emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, noting that if AVN is identified in its initial stages, joint-preserving procedures may still be viable before complete hip destruction occurs.

Research published in international orthopaedic journals indicates that steroid-induced AVN can develop within months of exposure, with the hip joint being the most commonly affected area.

Dr. Karun Jain, the conference's organizing secretary and a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Pushpanjali Medical Centre in Delhi, pointed out that one of the major challenges with AVN is that patients often overlook early symptoms like groin pain or stiffness, mistaking them for muscular issues.

“By the time they seek medical help, the hip joint may have already experienced irreversible collapse. Awareness, timely MRI evaluations, and early interventions can significantly reduce disability,” Dr. Jain remarked.

The conference included in-depth discussions on complex primary and revision hip arthroplasty, robotic and navigation-assisted hip surgeries, infection prevention, challenging hip reconstructions, dysplasia management, and enhanced recovery protocols.

Surgeons also explored how innovations in implant design, minimally invasive techniques, and precision-based technologies are enhancing surgical outcomes and shortening recovery times.

Dr. Gaurav Govil, Associate Director of Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement at Max Hospital Patparganj, noted, “Total Hip Replacement is now one of the most successful procedures in modern orthopaedics. With improved implants, advanced surgical planning, and quicker rehabilitation methods, patients can return to their normal lives much sooner. However, the emphasis must remain on early diagnosis and evidence-based treatment to prevent unnecessary disability.”

Experts at the conference warned that without enhanced early screening and preventive orthopaedic care, India could face a significant rise in the demand for hip replacement surgeries over the next decade. They stressed the need for ongoing academic collaboration, surgeon training, and the adoption of modern arthroplasty techniques to improve long-term patient outcomes.

The conference concluded with a strong appeal for increased public awareness regarding persistent hip pain following COVID recovery, responsible steroid usage, and the importance of timely orthopaedic consultations to avert severe joint damage and maintain mobility in younger populations.

As heatwaves intensify, health experts warn of their detrimental effects on eye and brain health. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to serious conditions, particularly for vulnerable populations. Hospitals are seeing an increase in heat-related ailments, including neurological symptoms and eye irritation. Experts recommend protective measures and hydration to mitigate these risks. Learn more about how to safeguard your health during extreme heat and the importance of recognizing symptoms that require immediate attention.

Heatwave Effects on Health

New Delhi: As heatwave conditions escalate in various regions, medical professionals are cautioning that extended exposure to high temperatures can negatively impact both physical health and neurological functions, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with existing health issues.

Experts in health emphasize that rising temperatures, dehydration, and prolonged sun exposure can disrupt the body's internal equilibrium, leading to fatigue, dizziness, severe headaches, migraines, heat exhaustion, and even neurological issues in susceptible populations.

Hospitals in the Delhi-NCR area are reporting an uptick in patients suffering from heat-related conditions, including eye irritation, headaches from dehydration, and neurological symptoms triggered by heat, according to doctors.

"The current heatwave is starting to show effects beyond typical heat-related illnesses, with a significant rise in neurological complaints in our outpatient department," stated Dr. Vinit Suri, Senior Consultant in Neurology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi.

"We've observed nearly a 20% increase in outpatient visits recently, with more individuals presenting symptoms like severe headaches, dizziness, disorientation, fainting spells, exacerbation of existing neurological conditions, and particularly migraine flare-ups," he added.

Dr. Suri noted that heat exposure and bright sunlight can trigger migraines in certain individuals. Extreme heat and dehydration can also disrupt blood flow to the brain, alter electrolyte levels, and place considerable stress on the nervous system, especially in vulnerable individuals.

Symptoms such as ongoing confusion, slurred speech, excessive drowsiness, seizures, or loss of consciousness should not be overlooked, as they may signal a serious neurological emergency requiring immediate medical intervention.

Dr. Sushma Sharma, Director of Neurology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, mentioned that individuals with migraines, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders may experience aggravated symptoms during extreme heat and sleepless nights caused by high temperatures and power outages.

"During intense summer heat, it's crucial to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours whenever possible. If going outside is unavoidable, individuals should protect themselves with umbrellas, sunglasses, and head coverings. Staying hydrated is equally vital, as dehydration from excessive sweating can lead to confusion and neurological issues," Dr. Sharma advised.

She recommended consuming natural electrolyte-rich beverages like coconut water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices to replenish fluids lost through sweating.

Doctors also warned that eye health is often overlooked in summer, despite the season significantly increasing the risk of irritation and infections.

Dr. Neeraj Sanduja, Director at Viaan Eye and Retina Centre, explained that excessive sunlight exposure, hot winds, dust, and dehydration commonly result in eye strain and discomfort.

"Summer heat can impact eye health in various ways. Extended exposure to intense sunlight, hot winds, dust, and dehydration can lead to dryness, irritation, redness, and eye strain.

"Many individuals also report burning sensations, itching, or watery eyes during this season. We frequently see cases of dry eye syndrome, allergic conjunctivitis, and corneal sunburns. Children and those spending extended periods outdoors should exercise extra caution," Dr. Sanduja advised.

Dr. Namrata Sharma, a professor at the Dr. R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences in Delhi, noted that continuous air-conditioning use and increased screen time indoors are also contributing to eye-related issues during summer.

"Dry indoor air from air-conditioning, combined with prolonged mobile and laptop usage, reduces natural tear production and exacerbates eye dryness. Early symptoms like redness, blurry vision, and irritation are often ignored, which can lead to more serious conditions if untreated," she cautioned.

"We are witnessing more cases of allergies, dry eye, and infections due to the rapid evaporation of the tear film," she added.

She recommended wearing UV-protected sunglasses outdoors, rinsing eyes with clean water after exposure to dust, avoiding rubbing eyes with unclean hands, using lubricating eye drops, and maintaining proper hydration throughout the day.

A recent study by ISRO has unveiled that the Moon's surface consists of a unique two-layered structure, challenging previous perceptions of its composition. The research, conducted at the site of the Vikram lander's hop, indicates that the top layer is a mere few centimeters thick, while deeper layers exhibit significantly different properties. This groundbreaking discovery is vital for future lunar exploration and the establishment of scientific bases on the Moon. The findings provide essential insights into the diverse characteristics of the lunar surface, paving the way for more effective surface operations in the southern polar region.

Revealing the Moon's Unique Structure

New Delhi: Recent research from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reveals that the Moon's surface is not merely a flat expanse of dust but features a unique two-layered structure resembling a cake. The top layer is just a few centimeters thick, according to the findings released on Tuesday.

This layered composition indicates that the lunar surface has been subjected to relentless impacts from tiny meteoroids since the crust solidified.

The investigation was conducted by scientists at the Physical Research Laboratory, a prominent national institute focused on space and related sciences, primarily funded by India's Department of Space.

The research centered on the location where the Vikram lander from Chandrayaan 3 performed a brief hop on September 2, 2023.

ISRO explained that when the lander's engines ignited for the 'hop', the exhaust functioned like a blower, removing the top three centimeters of loose dust and revealing the denser lunar material beneath.

The study also highlighted that while the surface dust is relatively light, it becomes significantly denser and more cohesive at a depth of just 6.5 centimeters.

For astronauts, this means that walking on the surface might feel akin to traversing dry flour, whereas just a few centimeters deeper, it would feel more like navigating through damp, stiff clay.

ISRO noted that these discoveries enhance our understanding of surface operations in the Moon's southern polar region.

Grasping the diverse characteristics of the lunar surface is crucial for future exploration endeavors, particularly for establishing scientific bases on the Moon.

This research represents a pioneering effort in obtaining such unique measurements.

Cruise Ship Hantavirus Cases Prompt Global Response

In a concerning development, a French woman and two Americans have either tested positive for or exhibited symptoms of hantavirus, as countries around the globe mobilize to repatriate passengers from a cruise ship affected by the outbreak. The ship, which was docked in the Canary Islands, saw its passengers begin their journey home on military and government flights starting Sunday.

Health officials in full protective gear assisted passengers in disembarking from the MV Hondius in Tenerife, a process that continued into Monday. French Health Minister Stephanie Rist reported that the French passenger's condition deteriorated overnight after being hospitalized. She was among five French nationals who returned to Paris on Sunday and began showing symptoms during the flight.

Among the 17 American passengers evacuated to Nebraska, one tested positive for hantavirus but remains asymptomatic, while another displayed mild symptoms, according to U.S. health authorities. The flight landed early Monday, where buses and police awaited the passengers.

Upon arrival, the Americans were directed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which has a federally funded quarantine facility. They will be evaluated for potential exposure to symptomatic individuals and assessed for the risk of virus transmission.

Kayla Thomas, a spokesperson for Nebraska Medicine, indicated that one passenger would be taken to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, while others would be monitored at the National Quarantine Unit. The Biocontainment Unit is equipped to handle highly infectious diseases, having previously treated COVID-19 and Ebola patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised close monitoring of the former passengers, leading many nations to implement quarantine measures. Earlier reports from the Spanish Health Ministry, WHO, and the cruise line indicated that none of the over 140 individuals aboard the Hondius had shown symptoms.

As part of the evacuation efforts, personnel in protective gear escorted passengers from the ship to shore. Flights arriving in Tenerife were set to transport individuals from more than 20 countries, with the operation extending into Monday.

Since the outbreak began, three fatalities have been reported, and five individuals who disembarked earlier have tested positive for the virus. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reassured the public, stating that the outbreak does not pose a significant risk, emphasizing that it is not comparable to COVID-19.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted through rodent droppings and is not easily spread between humans. However, the Andes virus identified in this outbreak may have rare human-to-human transmission. Symptoms typically manifest between one to eight weeks post-exposure.

WHO recommends that the home countries of the passengers engage in active monitoring and follow-up, which includes daily health checks either at home or in specialized facilities, according to Maria van Kerkhove, the organization’s leading epidemiologist.

Several countries have announced plans to quarantine or hospitalize their citizens for observation. Australia is dispatching a plane to evacuate its nationals and those from nearby regions, including New Zealand and certain Asian countries, as stated by Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia, who noted this flight would likely be the last to depart from Tenerife.

Additionally, Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen confirmed a second flight would be sent to bring back more passengers from the Netherlands and other nations, highlighting the dual focus on passenger safety and public health.

The Arrival of Summer and the Joy of Kulfi

As summer sets in, the heat becomes increasingly unbearable, especially during the afternoons. With the rising temperatures, our cravings for cold treats intensify. One such favorite is kulfi, a frozen dessert that everyone loves, especially during the hot months. When we feel too lazy to head to the market, the kulfi vendor often appears in our neighborhoods. The sound of his bell signals his arrival, and we instantly recognize that kulfi is just around the corner.

The Kulfi Vendor's Secret

The kulfi vendor operates from a cart, where he keeps all his kulfis nestled in ice. Surprisingly, despite the scorching heat, his kulfis do not melt. This is because he stores them in a box filled with ice. You might wonder why the ice doesn't melt quickly, and the answer lies in the addition of salt to the ice.

The Science of Ice and Salt

Many of you might be curious about the relationship between ice and salt. To understand this, we need to delve into some scientific concepts: freezing point, boiling point, and depression in freezing point. These are topics many of us might have encountered in school science classes, but let's refresh our memories.

The freezing point is the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid. For instance, the freezing point of water is 0 degrees Celsius, where it solidifies into ice. Conversely, the boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid begins to boil; for water, this is 100 degrees Celsius.

Depression in freezing point refers to the phenomenon where the freezing point of a substance decreases when a non-volatile solute is added. This results in a lower vapor pressure and a higher boiling point.

How Salt Affects Ice

In simpler terms, when salt is mixed with ice, it raises the boiling point, preventing it from melting quickly. Thus, when the kulfi vendor adds salt to the ice, he benefits in two ways: the ice remains solid, and the kulfis stay intact.

Interestingly, the vendor may not even realize the scientific principles at play as he goes about his daily routine of selling kulfis.

Authorities have apprehended four individuals involved in the cloning of ATM cards. These suspects are accused of defrauding people using cloned cards. All four hail from Haryana and were arrested in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. According to police reports, the arrested individuals learned the techniques for cloning credit and debit cards through YouTube tutorials, which they subsequently used to commit fraud. The police seized a vehicle, 14 debit cards, a credit card swiping machine, three mobile phones, and firearms from the suspects. ASP Ajay Pratap Singh stated that the suspects were caught near a Punjab National Bank in Chaudhpur. The accused are identified as Sanjeev Kumar, Mahendra, Amarjeet, and Ramesh, all residents of the Nardoh area in Hisar district. In addition to the cards and swiping machine, three firearms and seven cartridges were also recovered from their vehicle.

Modus Operandi of the Fraudsters

According to police, Sanjeev learned how to clone ATM cards via YouTube. Following this, he purchased an MSR-6 swiping machine online from Ahmedabad. The group would withdraw money using cloned ATM cards around midnight to avoid detection, ensuring that the original cardholders would not receive transaction alerts or block their cards.

To facilitate their thefts, they downloaded the ESY MSI app on their mobile phones. By watching instructional videos on YouTube, they connected the swiping machine to their phones via Bluetooth. They would then engage their victims in conversation to distract them while swiping their cards through the machine.

The suspects targeted individuals in remote areas away from police stations. They utilized rented vehicles for their operations and even changed the vehicle's registration number after committing the crimes. Their victims primarily included residents from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Bihar.

The article encourages readers to be cautious and consult a doctor before taking any medication, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making in health matters.

The Importance of Seeking Medical Advice

In India, many individuals have a tendency to self-medicate when faced with health issues, opting for home remedies or purchasing medications without consulting a doctor. Friends, neighbors, or relatives often play the role of amateur doctors, recommending medications based on their own experiences, such as claiming relief from fever or cold after taking a specific medicine.

However, this approach raises concerns about safety and efficacy. Medications come in various forms, and each person's body reacts differently to them. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid taking any medication without professional guidance. A pertinent question arises: how can one identify which medications should not be taken without a doctor's advice?

If you observe closely, medicine packaging contains essential information, including manufacturing dates, expiration dates, and pricing. Some packages even feature distinctive designs, such as red stripes. Have you ever wondered why these red stripes are present on certain medicine packets? While some might think it's merely a design choice, there's more to it.

The red stripes on medicine packaging serve as a warning: 'Caution! This medication should not be taken without a doctor's advice, as it may pose health risks.' Therefore, the next time you visit a pharmacy, pay attention to the packaging and look for these red stripes. It is advisable to consult a doctor before taking any medication, rather than relying solely on personal judgment.

We hope you found this information valuable. If so, please share it widely so that others can also be informed about the significance of red-striped medication packaging, helping them stay safe and healthy.

This article explores effective Ayurvedic remedies, particularly a simple combination of warm milk, rock salt, and psyllium husk, recommended by expert Dr. Saleem Zaidi. Learn how this natural remedy works to relieve constipation and promote digestive health. With practical tips on when and how to consume this mixture, readers can find a potential solution to their constipation problems. Discover the benefits of this easy-to-follow remedy and improve your gut health today.

Understanding Constipation

Constipation is a common digestive issue characterized by difficulty in passing stools, which may become hard and dry. This condition can arise from various factors, including inadequate water intake, a diet low in fiber, prolonged sitting, stress, medication side effects, and irregular routines. In India, many individuals suffer from constipation, particularly during winter when metabolism slows down and water consumption decreases. Beyond causing discomfort, prolonged constipation can lead to complications such as hemorrhoids, gas, abdominal pain, and indigestion.

Challenges in Treating Constipation

There are countless remedies and medications available for treating constipation. However, the challenge lies in the fact that most of these solutions provide only temporary relief, with symptoms often returning after a short period. Given the widespread nature of this issue in India, it is essential to adopt effective methods for its treatment.

Ayurvedic Solution for Constipation

Dr. Saleem Zaidi, an expert in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine, suggests a simple yet effective remedy for those struggling with constipation. He recommends consuming a glass of warm milk mixed with a pinch of rock salt and a tablespoon of psyllium husk (isabgol) every night before bed. This combination is said to effectively treat even chronic constipation. According to the expert, taking this remedy at night can lead to a complete bowel clearance the following day without pain or cramping, potentially eliminating constipation issues permanently.

How This Combination Works

The combination of milk, rock salt, and psyllium husk is regarded as a natural and effective remedy for constipation. Warm milk relaxes the intestines, facilitating easier stool passage. Rock salt acts as a natural laxative by drawing water into the intestines, softening the stool and promoting quicker relief from constipation. Meanwhile, psyllium husk is an excellent source of fiber that forms a gel-like substance in the stomach, increasing stool volume and aiding in painless passage. Together, these three ingredients soothe the digestive system, enhance intestinal movement, and, with regular consumption, can address constipation at its root. For optimal results, it is advised to consume this mixture 1 to 1.5 hours after dinner and 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime. It is important to consume the mixture immediately after preparation, as the psyllium husk will swell and form a gel if left to sit.

The Allure of Gold

Gold is among the most precious metals, and many women adore wearing gold jewelry. The prices of gold fluctuate frequently, prompting us to check the rates before purchasing any jewelry. However, some individuals find themselves unable to afford gold due to their financial constraints. Imagine the excitement if we could obtain gold for free!

A Unique Opportunity

Believe it or not, such an opportunity exists. Today, we will introduce you to a river where gold can be collected without any cost. This river is so rich in gold that people arrive with bags from early morning to search for it in the mud. The economic impact of the pandemic has left many struggling without jobs, making the quest for gold in this river even more appealing.

The Reality of Gold Finding

However, the amount of gold found here is not enough to sustain generations without work. Typically, individuals can only find a few grams of gold at a time. One woman shared her experience of working for 15 minutes in the river and discovering gold worth approximately 244 rupees. While this may seem minimal, for those without employment, it can be a valuable source of income. Some even consider it a part-time job.

The Search for Gold

Finding gold here requires hard work in the mud, and occasionally, you might strike gold. Many of you might be tempted to try your luck at this venture. To do so, you would need to travel to Thailand, where the famous gold river is located. This area, known as Gold Mountain, is situated in southern Thailand, close to Malaysia, and has a long history of gold mining.

Gold Opportunities in India

You might wonder who would travel to Thailand just to find a little gold. Fortunately, India also has a river where you can extract gold and earn some money. This location is in Jharkhand, where the Subarnarekha River is well-known. It flows through parts of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. Locals believe that gold particles from the nearby Karkari River wash into the Subarnarekha, making it a potential gold source.

Some individuals have peculiar habits, such as nail-biting or consuming fabric, thread, or even dirt. However, it is rare to hear about someone eating their own hair. Recently, doctors extracted a massive 6 kg hairball from the stomach of a teenage girl. Reports indicate that this girl had been pulling and eating her hair for the past six years.

Health Complications Arise

The 15-year-old girl, known by the pseudonym Nini, resides in Henan province in central China. She visited the Wuhan Children's Hospital in the neighboring Hubei province with her mother. According to a report from a state-run news website, the girl was extremely thin, standing at 1.6 meters tall and weighing only 35 kg. Additionally, she had not experienced her menstrual cycle for six months.

Severe Abdominal Pain Leads to Hospital Visit

As reported by the South China Morning Post, Nini informed her mother about the intense abdominal pain she was experiencing. The pain was so severe that it hindered her ability to eat or perform daily activities, prompting her mother to take her to the hospital.

A Shocking Discovery

The report revealed that Nini was also suffering from severe anemia. Her mother informed the doctors that the girl had been consuming her hair for six years. Upon examination, doctors discovered a large mass of hair and remnants of food accumulated in her stomach. The extraction of the hair left everyone astonished.

Similar Case Reported in Jaipur

A similar incident occurred at the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur, where a 14-year-old girl had a 210-centimeter hairball removed from her stomach. This case was noted as having the longest hairball ever extracted, surpassing the previous record of 180 centimeters. The girl from Agra, Uttar Pradesh, had been suffering from abdominal pain and vomiting for nearly a month before the doctors discovered a hard mass in her stomach.

Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

Tenerife (Spain): A cruise ship affected by hantavirus, carrying over 140 individuals, has docked at Tenerife, the largest island in Spain's Canary Islands, located off the West African coast. Passengers and some crew members are set to disembark.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Spanish officials, and the cruise line Oceanwide Expeditions, no one aboard the MV Hondius is currently exhibiting symptoms of the virus.

The outbreak has resulted in three fatalities, with five passengers who disembarked from the ship confirmed to be infected with hantavirus, a virus that can lead to severe health issues.

The vessel will not dock at the port but will remain anchored, with passengers being ferried to shore in small boats. Each individual disembarking will undergo health checks for symptoms and will only leave the ship once evacuation flights are arranged.

Passengers from over 20 different nationalities are currently on board.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, along with Spain's health and interior ministers, will oversee the evacuation process. Authorities have assured that those disembarking will not interact with the local population.

Hantavirus is typically transmitted through inhalation of contaminated rodent droppings and is not easily spread between humans. However, the Andes virus identified in this outbreak may have the potential for rare human-to-human transmission. Symptoms can appear between one to eight weeks post-exposure.

Officials aim to complete the evacuation flights by Sunday and Monday, as stated by Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Management director, during a briefing on Saturday.

Both the United States and the United Kingdom have committed to sending aircraft to evacuate their citizens. American evacuees will be quarantined at a medical facility in Nebraska.

Spanish passengers will be taken to a medical center for quarantine. Oceanwide has reported 13 Spanish passengers and one crew member on board.

Disembarking individuals will leave their luggage behind and may only carry a small bag with essential items, including a cellphone, charger, and necessary documents.

Some crew members, along with the body of a deceased passenger, will remain on the ship, which is scheduled to continue to the Netherlands for disinfection, according to Spanish authorities.

Researchers at NIT-Rourkela have made a significant advancement by developing a lightweight nanocomposite material for aircraft landing gear. This innovative material aims to enhance durability and performance, addressing the limitations of traditional aluminum alloys. The research team, led by Prof. Syed Nasimul Alam, utilized advanced techniques to create a composite that can withstand high-stress conditions, making it suitable for defense aircraft and UAVs. Published in the journal Materials Letters, this breakthrough could lead to safer and more efficient aerospace operations. Read on to learn more about this exciting development in aerospace technology.

Innovative Material for Aircraft Landing Gear

Bhubaneswar/Rourkela: A team of researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT)-Rourkela has successfully created a lightweight material aimed at enhancing the durability of aircraft landing gear.

Traditionally, landing gear is constructed from aluminum and its alloys, which are designed to support the aircraft's weight and withstand the rigors of runway contact.

Although aluminum is known for its lightness, its ability to endure extreme stress is often limited.

To overcome this challenge, Prof. Syed Nasimul Alam, an Associate Professor in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at NIT Rourkela, along with his research team, including Dr. Arka Ghosh, Dr. Ashutosh Das, Dr. Pankaj Shrivastava, Nityananda Sahoo, Parth Patel, and Dr. Velaphi Msomi from the University of South Africa, has developed an innovative nanocomposite material suitable for aircraft landing gear.

Their research findings have been published in the esteemed journal, Materials Letters. Nanocomposites consist of materials at the nanoscale, measuring over 100,000 times thinner than a human hair.

To enhance the material's compressive strength and load-bearing capabilities, the research team incorporated carbon nanotubes.

The addition of graphite nanoplatelets further enhanced the properties of the nanocomposite.

To ensure thermal stability, hexagonal boron nitride was utilized, which improved the strength, toughness, and overall performance of the aluminum.

High-frequency sound waves were employed to achieve an even distribution of particles within the aluminum matrix.

The combined materials underwent high-pressure compaction, followed by heating and compression in an oxygen-free environment, resulting in a dense and well-bonded nanocomposite ideal for aerospace applications.

Prof. Alam noted, “The Al-based hybrid nanocomposites developed through spark plasma sintering (SPS) exhibit a uniform distribution of nanofillers in the aluminum matrix, along with exceptional wear resistance due to the synergistic load-bearing mechanism.”

This newly developed nanocomposite holds significant potential for use in defense aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where lightweight construction and durability are critical, thereby enhancing structural reliability and contributing to safer, more efficient aerospace operations.

Childhood obesity is becoming a pressing issue, with alarming signs such as dark neck folds indicating potential health risks like diabetes. A recent study highlighted the sedentary habits of children, emphasizing the need for increased physical activity. Experts recommend regular outdoor play and a balanced diet to combat obesity and its associated health problems. Parents are urged to monitor their children's health closely and encourage active lifestyles to prevent serious conditions. This article delves into the causes, symptoms, and effective strategies for promoting healthier habits among children.

Childhood Obesity: A Growing Concern

The impact of changing lifestyles and poor dietary habits is increasingly evident in the health of children and adolescents. Kids spending excessive hours on mobile devices, television, and video games are showing physical changes that may indicate serious health issues. The appearance of thick, dark folds on the neck is not merely dirt or a skin condition; it is medically termed acanthosis nigricans, which signals rising insulin resistance in the body. This condition can be an early warning sign of diabetes. The darkening cannot be washed away with soap or cleansers, and ignoring it can pose significant health risks.

Study Findings on 60 Children

A recent study involving 60 children revealed that four of them exhibited thick and dark neck folds. Alarmingly, two of these children were already diagnosed with diabetes. These children predominantly spent their time indoors, engaged with mobile devices, television, and computers, neglecting outdoor play or exercise. This sedentary lifestyle contributed to increased obesity, which can gradually lead to serious conditions like diabetes.

Causes of Dark Neck Folds

The dark patches and thick folds on the neck develop when insulin in the body does not function properly. The body starts producing excess insulin, leading to the visible darkening of the skin. This is not a skin disease but rather an early indicator of diabetes. Ignoring this symptom can lead to severe health complications in the future.

Expert Recommendations for Prevention

The most straightforward and effective way to prevent this condition is to encourage children and adolescents to participate in outdoor sports regularly. Activities such as cycling, running, swimming, and playing sports help keep the body active and reduce the risks of obesity and diabetes. Experts emphasize that children today spend too much time indoors, leading to decreased physical activity and increased obesity, which can trigger various health issues.

Advice for Parents

If you notice dark patches or thick folds on your child's neck, it is crucial to consult a doctor immediately. Encourage children to engage in at least one hour of outdoor play each day. Limit junk food and sugary drinks at home, and promote an active lifestyle with a regular routine. A balanced diet and consistent exercise can significantly improve children's health and lower the risk of diabetes.

Nutritional Benefits of Milk and Raisins

Milk is widely regarded as a nutritious beverage, packed with protein, calcium, and riboflavin (Vitamin B2). It also contains essential vitamins such as A, D, K, and E, along with minerals like phosphorus, magnesium, and iodine. Additionally, milk is rich in enzymes and live blood cells, all of which contribute positively to health.

On the other hand, raisins also offer significant health benefits. They are rich in vitamins A, B-complex, copper, and selenium, which aid in the production of red blood cells, preventing anemia. Raisins are also beneficial for reproductive health and support a healthy liver and immune system.

Advantages of Consuming Milk and Raisins Together

Combining milk and raisins not only enhances sexual vitality but also provides numerous health benefits.

Improves Digestion: Adequate fiber is essential for proper digestion. Consuming milk and raisins together provides the necessary fiber, thereby enhancing digestive health.

Controls Blood Pressure: Individuals with high blood pressure should consider adding milk and raisins to their diet. The sodium content in these foods helps regulate blood pressure, making them a boon for those with hypertension.

Reduces Cancer Risk: Surprisingly, consuming milk and raisins may help protect against cancer. Raisins contain catechin antioxidants, which guard against free radical damage, a potential precursor to various types of cancer.

Alleviates Eye Problems: For those experiencing eye issues, the combination of raisins and milk can be beneficial. The polyphenolic phytonutrients present act as strong antioxidants, helping to prevent eye-related problems.

Enhances Male Sexual Health: Married men are advised to consume warm milk with raisins before bedtime. This practice can improve fertility, increase sperm motility, and enhance romantic endurance, ultimately increasing the chances of parenthood.
