Scientists warn that these extreme weather patterns may continue, posing serious climate challenges for the continent. Discover the full implications of this unprecedented heatwave and drought in our detailed analysis.

August 2026: A Critical Month for Global Heat and Drought

The month of August 2026 marked a significant period of extreme heat and drought across Europe and the globe. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, this August was recorded as the hottest on a global scale, with an average surface temperature of 16.96°C, surpassing the 1991-2020 average by 0.85°C. This month tied with July 2023 as the hottest month ever recorded.

Impact of Heat and Drought in Europe

In Europe, the average temperature for August reached 20.26°C, which is 1.10°C above the norm. Countries such as France, Italy, Hungary, Romania, and various regions in the Balkans experienced temperatures that were approximately 3 to 5°C higher than usual. The weather from June to August in Western Europe was noted as the hottest on record.

The persistent heat and lack of rainfall exacerbated drought conditions in many parts of Europe. Throughout August, significant areas in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe recorded below-average rainfall. The soil moisture levels were critically low, increasing pressure on agriculture and water resources.

Record Low Water Levels in Rivers

The drought had a pronounced effect on major European rivers. The Rhine, Danube, Loire, Po, and others experienced unusually low water flow in several locations, with some areas reaching record low water levels.

These low water levels impacted river transport, irrigation, energy production, and local ecosystems. In some regions, restrictions on water usage had to be implemented.

Ongoing Challenges Ahead

Scientists warn that the rising global temperatures and changing weather patterns could intensify heat and drought events in Europe. Alongside the record temperatures in August, sea surface temperatures also reached unprecedented levels, while the El Niño phenomenon is gaining strength.

Thus, the summer of 2026 has once again highlighted that heatwaves, droughts, and critically low river flows are becoming significant climate challenges for Europe.

This transition marks a new chapter in their careers, allowing them to inspire future generations in space exploration. Learn more about their contributions and future endeavors.

NASA Astronauts Move to Emeritus Status

Cape Canaveral: The two astronauts from NASA who played pivotal roles in the Artemis II mission earlier this year are stepping back from active spaceflight duties.

On Wednesday, NASA revealed that Reid Wiseman, the commander of Artemis II, and pilot Victor Glover will transition to emeritus astronaut status, allowing them to continue contributing to lunar exploration efforts.

Glover has accepted a leadership position at California Polytechnic State University, while Wiseman's future endeavors remain unspecified. Both astronauts made history in April by orbiting the moon alongside two other crew members, achieving a new record for distance traveled by humans.

Jeremy Hansen, another member of the Artemis II crew, retired from the Canadian Space Agency in July, leaving Christina Koch as the sole active astronaut from the mission.

In their new roles, Wiseman and Glover will focus on training and mentoring NASA personnel, sharing their extensive knowledge to aid future lunar missions. This strategy aims to leverage their expertise effectively, according to NASA.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised their contributions, stating, 'Together, they undertook one of the most demanding missions in human spaceflight and played a crucial role in reestablishing America's presence on the moon. I am thankful they will continue to impart their experiences.'

At Cal Poly, Glover will work on long-term strategies and inspire students to pursue careers in science and engineering. His new role commenced on September 1.

Wiseman's transition will take effect this month. Selected as an astronaut by NASA in 2009, the retired Navy captain spent over five months aboard the International Space Station in 2014 and later served as NASA's chief astronaut.

After graduating from Cal Poly in 1999, Glover became a Navy test pilot before being chosen as an astronaut in 2013. He piloted SpaceX's second crewed flight for NASA, a nearly six-month mission to the International Space Station in 2020 and 2021.

Glover's insightful reflections during the moon mission resonated with many, as he remarked, 'Earth is an oasis in a vast expanse of nothingness, this universe where humanity exists as one. This is a moment for us to remember our place, our identity, and the necessity of unity.'

Wiseman also touched hearts when he and his crew sought permission to name a lunar crater after his late wife, Carroll, who passed away from cancer in 2020.

Recently, the Artemis II crew was honored with the Congressional Space Medal of Honor by President Donald Trump during a ceremony at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Due to the high market value of orangutans—estimated between Rs 20-25 lakh internationally—it is suspected that they were illegally smuggled from their native habitats in Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly from the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra.

The rescued orangutans are currently in quarantine at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, where a team of veterinarians is monitoring their health. The minister stated that the animals are stable and being kept in a climate-controlled environment.

Inspector General Himansu Lal of the Odisha STF confirmed that a team led by a senior officer has already commenced the investigation in Baleshwar.

STF DIG Vishal Singh mentioned that they are in the early stages of gathering local data and are coordinating with the central government’s wildlife division to determine if similar incidents have occurred elsewhere in the country.

The STF has reached out to the district SP and DFO to gather information regarding the rescue of the orangutans from a casuarina forest in the Bichitrapur area of Bhograi block.

In the meantime, forest officials and local police are canvassing the area to gather more information about the incident.

Villagers first noticed the young orangutans clinging to trees on Tuesday morning and promptly alerted the forest department, according to Baleshwar Divisional Forest Officer Prateek Prakash Indalkar.

Witnesses reported seeing a black SUV near the forest on Monday night, which was also captured on CCTV footage.

A local police officer noted that tracking down the SUV and its owner could provide crucial leads regarding the arrival of the baby orangutans.

The Odisha forest department has reached out to zoos nationwide to check if any orangutans are missing from their facilities.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from airports, ports, and major railway stations, and have contacted the Coast Guard to investigate any potential transportation of the animals via water routes.

Officials at Nandankanan Zoological Park reported that three of the five orangutans are male and two are female, all aged between six months and one year, standing approximately one to one-and-a-half feet tall.

The animals are currently receiving food and oral rehydration solutions.

Nandankanan Zoological Park has a designated enclosure for orangutans, which has been vacant since the death of a 41-year-old orangutan in 2019. A female orangutan was previously transferred from Pune Zoo to Nandankanan in 2003.

The state government has requested permission from the Central Zoo Authority to house the five baby orangutans at Nandankanan Zoological Park.

The Himalayas, often referred to as the 'Water Tower of Asia', are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change. With glaciers melting at alarming rates and impacting billions downstream, the need for a unified approach to conservation has never been more critical. This article discusses the interconnectedness of the Himalayan ecosystem, the urgent call for global action, and the necessity for a Himalayan Climate Compact that transcends national boundaries. It emphasizes the importance of community involvement and international cooperation in safeguarding this vital region for future generations. Discover how we can protect the Himalayas and, in turn, protect ourselves.

The Himalayas: A Unified Ecological System

Dr. Rakesh Kapoor

The Himalayas do not recognize the borders between Uttarakhand and Nepal, nor do rivers acknowledge state lines. Floods disregard international boundaries, and climate change knows no political limits.

It is essential that our planning, governance, and disaster management transcend administrative divisions, treating the Himalayas as a singular, interconnected ecological entity.

Often referred to as the 'Third Pole' or the 'Water Tower of Asia', the Himalayas are crucial for sustaining some of the world's major rivers. However, these terms can make the region seem remote. In reality, preserving the Himalayas is vital for safeguarding human civilization from the severe impacts of climate change.

The Urgency of Action

The urgency of the situation is undeniable. The Hindu Kush Himalaya is experiencing significant warming, with glaciers losing ice at an alarming rate. Recent assessments indicate that these glaciers are losing ice at nearly double the rate observed two decades ago, with a staggering loss of up to 27 meters in thickness since 1975. Approximately two billion people rely on the region's snow and ice for their water supply.

Saving the Himalayas for Humanity: The Himalayas are not just the property of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, China, or Afghanistan. Their glaciers, rivers, monsoon systems, forests, and biodiversity form a cohesive ecological network that transcends political borders.

The Consequences of Environmental Change

Namaste to the Great Himalayas: This greeting is not just a tribute to the mountains; it serves as a reminder that the Himalayas are undergoing rapid changes. The transformations in glaciers, snowfields, and rivers are manifesting in the form of landslides, glacial lake outburst floods, and other disasters.

The melting of glaciers in the high Himalayas can have repercussions hundreds of kilometers downstream. The disappearance of forests leads to dried springs and destabilized slopes, impacting villages, cities, agriculture, and hydropower systems. Changes in the cryosphere affect water, food, and energy security, ultimately threatening human safety.

A Collective Responsibility

Himalayan conservation cannot be the sole responsibility of forest departments or individual governments; it must evolve into a community-driven movement and a global climate priority.

The Great Contradiction: The Himalayas face the dual pressures of global warming, primarily driven by industrial emissions, and local development that exploits fragile ecosystems for roads, hydropower, and tourism.

This combination of global climate change and local ecological degradation poses a significant threat.

The Need for Action

Addressing climate change in the Himalayas requires more than superficial measures like planting trees or building flood walls. We must tackle both the causes and effects of climate change.

Global Policy Challenges: The world is not lacking in climate conferences or scientific warnings; it suffers from a lack of effective implementation. The Paris Agreement provided a framework, yet global emissions remain alarmingly high.

At COP30 in Belém in 2025, nations increased commitments for adaptation finance but failed to create a binding plan to phase out fossil fuels.

A Himalayan Climate Compact

Proposed Solutions: The Himalayas require a new governance model—a Himalayan Climate Compact that includes governments, scientific institutions, local communities, civil society, and international organizations.

First, the Himalayas should be viewed as a single ecological system rather than fragmented national territories. Countries must collaborate on scientific research, glacier monitoring, and disaster preparedness.

Second, all major infrastructure projects must undergo climate-risk assessments to ensure they are suitable for future climate conditions.

Third, local communities should be engaged as active partners, utilizing their traditional knowledge for watershed restoration and disaster preparedness.

Fourth, an international Mountain and Cryosphere Adaptation Fund should be established to support those most affected by climate change.

A New Social Contract

Beyond Borders: The Himalayas require a new social contract where citizens, governments, and nations act without waiting for one another.

The challenge extends beyond national interests; it is a struggle between a sustainable planet and an economic model that depletes natural resources faster than they can regenerate.

We need a global Himalayan movement that fosters collaboration among scientists, communities, businesses, and governments.

The Himalayas can still be preserved, but time is running out. The United Nations has stressed the importance of rapid decarbonization and effective water management to protect mountain communities.

The Choice Ahead

Humanity's Choice: We can either exploit the Himalayas as a resource or recognize them as a vital life-support system. If we allow the Himalayas to deteriorate, we will ultimately harm ourselves.

The Himalayas cannot be safeguarded through engineering alone; they require a development model rooted in science, ecological security, and community involvement.

Conclusion

New Delhi, Sep 8: JB Park, the President and CEO of Samsung South West Asia, expressed the company's goal to position India at the forefront of global innovations that enhance lives, as the tech leader commemorates its 30-year presence in the nation.

According to Park, India has transitioned from merely being a market for global technologies to a hub for imagining, engineering, and developing technology for the entire world.

“What truly inspires me about India is its ability to consistently surpass expectations,” Park remarked. “We no longer view India solely as a market of 1.4 billion individuals. Instead, we recognize it as a place where the future of technology is conceived, developed, and led,” he elaborated.

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) reshaping consumer technology, Samsung's engineers in India are collaborating with international teams to create next-generation AI solutions. “AI will only have significance if it addresses real challenges faced by real people. Few places challenge us to achieve that better than India,” Park stated.

The vast scale, diversity, and rapidly changing technological landscape of India are increasingly influencing Samsung's innovation strategies. The company's R&D teams in Bengaluru and Noida work closely with their global counterparts, contributing to technologies and experiences tailored for both India and the global market.

“India pushes us to innovate in unique ways,” Park noted. “Creating products for such a diverse and large population necessitates designing solutions that are intuitive, inclusive, and relevant to millions with varying needs. Often, these innovations benefit consumers worldwide,” he added.

Samsung's commitment to India extends beyond manufacturing and R&D; it also encompasses investments in talent, education, skills, and innovation.

“Technology alone does not drive progress; it is people who do,” Park emphasized. “We believe that human potential is the most crucial technology platform available,” he added.

“The youth are leveraging technology to tackle some of society's most urgent issues. This is precisely the type of innovation that India requires now and in the future,” he remarked.

As Samsung reflects on three decades in India, Park stated that the company's legacy should be evaluated not just by the products, manufacturing ecosystem, and research capabilities it has established, but also by the individuals and ideas it has fostered.

This article explores the profound changes brought about by the digital age in India, reflecting on the transition from traditional communication methods to modern technology. It discusses the impact on relationships, education, and societal norms, emphasizing both the benefits and challenges of this transformation. The author urges readers to embrace technology while maintaining cultural values and personal connections. Dive into this insightful reflection on how the digital revolution shapes our lives today.

A Journey Through Time: From Letters to Digital Communication

Desk. The current generation is arguably the most fortunate and transformative in India's history. We have experienced two distinct eras: one where waiting for a letter could take months, where a single black-and-white television served an entire village, and where making a phone call required a trip to the local STD booth; and another where the entire world is at our fingertips, allowing us to video call our children in America with just a button press. This shift is not merely technological; it represents a change in mindset, society, relationships, and lifestyles. Today’s digital age is a revolution that has altered every aspect of our lives.

Reflecting on India thirty years ago, we remember waiting for the postman. A letter would take about fifteen days to reach its destination, followed by a response. Those letters carried emotions, anticipation, and a sense of connection. Nowadays, messages sent via WhatsApp arrive in an instant, but where is the sentiment? In the past, wedding invitations were delivered personally, with people walking from house to house, sharing yellow rice as a gesture of warmth. Today, a single message can send e-invites to thousands. While tasks have become easier, the warmth of relationships has diminished. The stark reality of the digital age is that while it has eliminated physical distances, it has created an odd emotional distance even among those who are close. In a household of four, each person may be engrossed in their own mobile device, connected to someone thousands of kilometers away, yet lacking the time to converse with their own family members.

However, we must also acknowledge the significant positive aspects of this transformation. The digital age has truly democratized communication. Today, even the poorest individual can convey their thoughts directly to the Prime Minister via their mobile phone. Farmers no longer need to visit the market to check crop prices; they can do so from their fields. Our daughters, once confined to the home, are now pursuing online education to become doctors and engineers. During the pandemic, when schools were closed, digital technology saved our children's education. A laborer can now transfer money to his mother’s account in seconds, a task that once took months. Government benefits are now directly deposited into beneficiaries' accounts, eliminating middlemen. This is a monumental change.

The educational transformation witnessed by the current generation is unprecedented. We began our learning with slates and chalk, often using the same book for an entire year. Today, children have access to entire libraries on their mobile devices. They can search for anything on Google or listen to lectures from the world’s best educators on YouTube. Yet, this also presents a challenge. While information is abundant, the depth of knowledge seems to be diminishing. Children can quickly find answers on Google, but the habit of retaining information and reflecting on it is fading. Previously, we memorized multiplication tables; now we rely on calculators. While convenience has increased, memory and effort have decreased. Therefore, it is crucial for today’s educators and parents to teach children to be masters of technology, not its slaves.

This digital era has also transformed our villages. Today, young people are creating reels on Instagram, running YouTube channels, and earning substantial incomes. This represents new employment opportunities. However, alongside this, there is a rapid spread of indecency, vulgarity, and negative influences. We can use WhatsApp groups and Facebook to raise awareness. Technology is merely a tool; it can be both beneficial and harmful. Like a knife, it can be used to cut vegetables or cause harm. It is up to us how we choose to utilize it.

In conclusion, change is inevitable. Those who resist change fall behind. Our generation has witnessed the journey from bullock carts to airplanes, from letters to video calls. This is our strength. We must blend our experiences with new technologies. We need to teach our children that the mobile phone is their servant, not their master. Set aside two hours a day without mobile devices, spend time with family, visit the fields, and converse with elders. Embrace technology, but do not abandon your culture, simplicity, and values. If we hold onto our roots in this digital age, we will remain at the forefront globally; otherwise, we risk being alone and hollow despite having technology at our disposal. This is the most significant message of the digital age.

Nine employee associations at ISRO have expressed their concerns regarding the agency's plans to transfer manufacturing and operational functions to private entities. In a letter to Chairperson V Narayanan, they seek clarity on the implications for current employees and future recruitment. The associations emphasize the need for transparency in the transfer of ISRO's technology, which they consider a national asset. They also question whether ISRO will continue its core functions related to launch vehicles. This situation raises significant questions about the future of India's space research and the role of public versus private sectors in this critical field.

Concerns Raised by ISRO Employee Associations

New Delhi: A coalition of nine employee associations from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has reached out to Chairperson V Narayanan, requesting clarification regarding the agency's plans to transfer its manufacturing and operational roles to private companies.

In their letter dated September 4, the associations expressed concerns about ISRO's future responsibilities and the potential impact on current employees and future hiring.

"While private involvement in specific commercial activities can coexist with a robust, publicly owned ISRO, we cannot accept a policy that relegates ISRO to merely a research and development entity, while the actual production and operation of launch vehicles are handed over to private entities," the letter stated.

The letter referenced comments made by Pawan Goenka, chairperson of the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe), who indicated that ISRO would eventually cease to manufacture launch vehicles, leaving that task to the private sector or public sector undertakings.

The employee groups noted that Goenka's statements have not been followed by any formal communication from the Department of Space, detailing the approved policy, its legal framework, implementation timeline, or its effects on the current workforce and future recruitment.

"The technology developed by ISRO is a national treasure. Its transfer should be conducted transparently and responsibly, considering strategic, safety, and employment factors, rather than being communicated through media reports," the letter emphasized.

Additionally, the associations raised questions about whether ISRO will continue to handle the design, development, integration, testing, and launching of PSLV, LVM3, SSLV, and future vehicles.

They also inquired about how the proposed changes would affect the sanctioned workforce, existing job vacancies, recruitment schedules, and the onboarding of scientific, technical, administrative, and industrial personnel across all ISRO centers.

Chimpanzee Vocal Patterns: A Study on Dialects

New Delhi: A recent study has uncovered that the laughter, grunts, and whimpers of chimpanzees may lead to the development of unique vocal patterns or 'dialects' among young chimps.

Published in the journal PLOS One, the research offers fresh insights into how different vocal patterns among various chimp populations arise and evolve, challenging the notion that their calls are solely dictated by genetics.

The study involved analyzing the vocalizations of infant and juvenile chimpanzees from two distinct populations located at Chimfunshi Wildlife Orphanage in Zambia and Gombe National Park in Tanzania.

The researchers noted, "We could distinguish between sites for all call types, indicating the existence of dialects within the chimpanzee vocal repertoire."

As the chimpanzees matured, the differences in vocalizations between the groups became increasingly evident, indicating that vocal behavior continues to evolve during early development.

"Understanding the development of communication in early life is crucial for grasping animal behavior. Our results demonstrate that chimpanzee vocalizations are not merely fixed at birth but evolve as young chimps engage with their social and ecological surroundings," stated Kassandra Giragosian, the lead researcher and a doctoral candidate at Queen Mary University of London.

The researchers highlighted that, in early human evolution, vocal behaviors were largely similar across populations. However, as evolution progressed, these acoustic differences became more pronounced.

Similar to humans who develop regional accents, the study found that young chimpanzees from different communities exhibit subtly distinct vocal patterns.

Interestingly, some population-specific vocal traits were already evident in infancy, while others developed during the juvenile stage.

This developmental pattern suggests that social interactions, environmental factors, and other non-genetic influences play a significant role in shaping how young chimpanzees communicate.

The findings provide the first evidence that chimpanzees develop distinct vocal differences or dialects as they grow, contributing to the understanding that primate communication is more adaptable and dynamic than previously thought.

Moreover, the research offers a new lens through which to examine the processes that influence vocal behavior in other species, focusing on how communication evolves over time rather than merely comparing adult populations.

The researchers also propose a framework for exploring how communication systems emerge and diversify within animal groups.

The World Meteorological Organization warns that El Niño conditions are likely to intensify, potentially lasting until February 2027. This phenomenon could significantly alter rainfall and temperature patterns, increasing the risks of floods, droughts, and extreme heat. Recent forecasts from the India Meteorological Department indicate a rainfall deficit and record high temperatures, raising concerns for agricultural production, particularly wheat. As El Niño strengthens, its impacts on global weather and agriculture are expected to escalate, prompting urgent attention from communities and economies worldwide.

El Niño Conditions Expected to Strengthen

New Delhi: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has indicated that the current El Niño conditions in the equatorial Pacific are likely to escalate into a significantly strong event, potentially lasting until February 2027.

This phenomenon is expected to greatly influence rainfall and temperature trends, leading to increased risks of floods, droughts, and extreme heat.

In a recent statement, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo remarked, "El Niño, which translates to 'boy child' in Spanish, can have devastating effects on communities and economies worldwide."

She added, "We are already witnessing disruptions and destruction from droughts and floods, and these effects are anticipated to worsen as El Niño strengthens."

These projections from the WMO follow a forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which stated that El Niño conditions might continue until February of the following year.

El Niño is one of the three phases of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a climate phenomenon marked by variations in sea temperatures across the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, along with atmospheric fluctuations.

While El Niño typically causes global warming, its counterpart, La Niña, usually results in cooling effects. ENSO also includes a neutral phase.

In India, El Niño conditions generally lead to reduced rainfall, which was confirmed by the IMD's report on August 31, indicating a 16 percent rainfall deficit across the country for that month.

Additionally, August 2023 was recorded as the hottest August in India since 1901, partly attributed to El Niño.

For September, the IMD predicts rainfall to be below 91 percent of the long-term average (LPA), which is approximately 167.9 mm based on historical data from 1971 to 2020.

Although the IMD has not yet released a post-monsoon seasonal forecast, the intensifying El Niño suggests that winter temperatures may rise, further complicating the situation as India is already experiencing warmer winters.

A recent analysis by Climate Trends, a climate research organization based in Delhi, indicates that winters in northern India are becoming shorter, with warming trends in February and March becoming increasingly common.

The study highlights that February has seen the most rapid warming, with temperatures increasing by 0.69 degrees Celsius per decade, while March and April have also experienced significant rises of 0.58 degrees Celsius and 0.66 degrees Celsius, respectively.

These temperature shifts pose a risk of severe heat stress on Rabi crops, particularly wheat, as they coincide with critical growth stages.

"These temperature changes coincide with the reproductive and grain-filling stages of wheat and are already impacting production in key wheat-growing areas," the study concluded.

Researchers at NIT Rourkela have patented an innovative hybrid energy-storage system designed to enhance the efficiency and lifespan of electric vehicle batteries. This breakthrough addresses common battery issues such as low power density and thermal stress, particularly in urban settings. By integrating supercapacitors, the system can manage sudden power demands, thereby extending battery life. The architecture simplifies connections and reduces complexity, making it ideal for various low-voltage electric vehicles. This advancement could significantly impact the growing electric vehicle market in India.

Breakthrough in Electric Vehicle Battery Technology

New Delhi/Raurkela: Researchers from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Rourkela have been granted a patent for a cutting-edge hybrid energy-storage system aimed at enhancing the efficiency and longevity of batteries utilized in electric vehicles, as confirmed by officials.

As one of the largest automobile markets globally, India is witnessing a surge in electric vehicle adoption, driven by dwindling petroleum resources and government initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) schemes.

Monalisa Pattnaik, an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at NIT-Rourkela, explained that electric vehicles rely on a battery pack, which is a substantial, rechargeable energy-storage system composed of numerous interconnected cells. These battery packs often face challenges such as low power density, limited cycle life, and high thermal stress due to rapid current fluctuations.

These issues are particularly pronounced in urban environments where vehicles frequently start and stop, leading to sudden speed changes that can harm battery cells. To address these challenges, battery packs are commonly paired with high-power-density supercapacitors, forming a hybrid energy-storage system (HESS), according to Pattnaik.

Supercapacitors store energy electrostatically at the interface of electrodes and electrolytes, allowing for rapid charge and discharge cycles, and delivering power levels significantly higher than traditional batteries. They also boast an impressive cycle life, often exceeding one million charge-discharge cycles with minimal degradation. This capability allows supercapacitors to manage sudden demands for power during acceleration, deceleration, and regenerative braking, thus alleviating stress on the battery and extending its lifespan.

Pattnaik noted that battery packs and supercapacitors can be connected in three configurations: passive, semi-active, and active. In a passive setup, the two components are directly linked, which limits the supercapacitor's responsiveness to power demand changes. Active connections involve separate electronic converters for managing the battery and supercapacitor, but this adds complexity and reduces efficiency. To tackle these issues, the NIT-R researchers have created a hybrid energy-storage architecture designed to shield the battery from sudden power surges, optimize supercapacitor energy use, and minimize component count, thereby simplifying the system.

The architecture comprises three key components: a single converter that connects both the battery and supercapacitor to the vehicle's electrical system, an inductor positioned in the electrical pathway, and a unified control system to regulate power flow. Each component serves a distinct purpose. The single converter reduces the number of switches and control elements, simplifying the design. The inductor safeguards against abrupt current surges, enhancing battery longevity. The unified control system manages both acceleration and deceleration, reducing hardware needs, according to Pattnaik.

The researchers have conducted tests on this hybrid system under conditions involving sudden braking, rapid acceleration, and deceleration. The system maintained a stable 48 V voltage, facilitated smooth battery current transitions, and enabled the supercapacitor to efficiently manage sudden power fluctuations. "Our design is highly optimized for low-voltage electric vehicle platforms operating within the 24 V to 60 V DC range, including urban light electric vehicles such as electric scooters, motorcycles, e-rickshaws, cargo tricycles, and utility vehicles for campuses or industries," Pattnaik added.

New Delhi, Sept 2: Given Assam's pivotal location as a gateway to the Northeast, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is enhancing its surveillance and intelligence operations through advanced technology and community outreach to combat narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, human trafficking, and other cross-border crimes.

This renewed emphasis on border security is crucial for Assam, where the rise in narcotics trafficking and organized crime has raised alarms. Security forces are increasingly targeting routes that link the Northeast with neighboring nations to thwart criminal organizations from taking advantage of the region's geographical connections.

The significance of this issue was highlighted during the SSB Investiture Ceremony in New Delhi, where Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan underscored the importance of securing India’s open borders with Nepal and Bhutan while ensuring that the legitimate movement of people and goods remains uninterrupted.

The SSB is tasked with safeguarding approximately 2,450 km of India’s open international borders with Nepal and Bhutan. The India-Bhutan border is particularly critical from Assam's security standpoint due to its proximity and its broader implications for connectivity, trade, and movement across the Northeast.

Assam's role as a key transit and connectivity hub means that any vulnerabilities along its international borders could have repercussions extending beyond the immediate areas.

“Security weaknesses along the India-Bhutan border can thus affect regions far beyond the borders, especially when criminal networks exploit legitimate cross-border movements,” an official stated.

Mohan emphasized that border security is a cornerstone of India’s internal security and commended the SSB for its efforts in managing the country’s open frontiers. “Striking a balance between security, public convenience, and maintaining friendly relations amidst significant legitimate movement across these borders is a vital duty of the SSB,” he remarked.

In contrast to heavily fortified borders, the open frontiers with Nepal and Bhutan pose unique challenges for security forces, as there are no continuous physical barriers to control movement.

Mohan acknowledged the SSB’s initiatives to enhance surveillance through facial recognition technology, radar systems, CCTV cameras, and other modern tools. He also pointed out the force's proactive measures against human trafficking, counterfeit currency, narcotics, and arms smuggling.

For Assam, the focus on technology is crucial as security agencies aim to adapt to the evolving tactics employed by trafficking and smuggling networks. Enhanced surveillance and intelligence-sharing could facilitate the identification of suspicious activities while allowing legitimate cross-border transactions to proceed.

The Home Secretary also mentioned a proposed quadrilateral border security framework by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which includes collaboration among border-guarding forces, state governments, central agencies, and local communities.

SSB Director General Sanjay Singhal noted that the security landscape along international borders is rapidly evolving. He highlighted new challenges posed by hybrid warfare, cyber threats, drone-based risks, and innovative smuggling techniques. Consequently, the SSB is bolstering its operational capabilities with drones, advanced surveillance systems, improved communication tools, and other technological advancements.

ITC has long been diversified across FMCG, hospitality, paperboard, agribusiness, and other sectors. This move into technology could strengthen its presence in IT services.

Happiest Minds brings expertise in digital transformation, cloud services, cybersecurity, and other technology offerings. The primary strategic goal of this deal is to create a substantial tech platform by merging the strengths of both companies.

Market Reactions to the Deal

The announcement of the deal elicited varied responses in the stock market. ITC's shares surged by approximately 5%, while Happiest Minds' shares fell by nearly 9%. This market reaction indicates that investors are viewing the deal and the proposed share swap ratio differently.

Next Steps in the Merger Process

To finalize this deal, regulatory and corporate processes must be completed. Therefore, it is more accurate to view this as a merger announcement and proposed corporate restructuring rather than a finalized merger effective from September 1.

If all necessary approvals and conditions are met, the integration of ITC Infotech and Happiest Minds could significantly alter ITC's technology presence.

Conclusion

In summary, ITC has indeed made a bold move in the tech sector, but further processes are required for the merger to be fully effective.

New Delhi, Sep 1: On Tuesday, Apple, the renowned US technology firm, officially entered a new chapter in its leadership as John Ternus assumed the role of chief executive officer (CEO), taking over from Tim Cook, who has been at the helm for 15 years.

Effective September 1, Ternus's appointment marks the conclusion of Cook's leadership, which began in August 2011 after the departure of co-founder Steve Jobs.

In his new position, Cook will serve as executive chairman, focusing on global policy engagement and select company initiatives.

Additionally, Ternus has been appointed to Apple's board of directors.

Having joined Apple's product design team in 2001, Ternus rose to the position of senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021. He has been instrumental in overseeing hardware engineering across Apple's diverse product lineup, contributing significantly to the development of the iPad, AirPods, and various iPhone and Mac models.

Under Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization soared from approximately $350 billion to around $2.7 trillion, with annual revenue increasing from about $108 billion in 2011 to over $400 billion.

Furthermore, Apple's services sector has become a significant growth driver, generating over $80 billion annually through platforms like the App Store, Apple Music, and Apple Pay.

Ternus's transition comes at a pivotal moment for Apple, as artificial intelligence presents a major strategic challenge. He will need to advance Apple's AI initiatives while preserving the company's ecosystem-driven business model and its vast customer base.

The situation highlights the ongoing battle against financial scams in the digital age, as Meta faces scrutiny over its ad policies. Learn more about the implications of this issue and how it affects users.

Meta's Response to Cyber Fraud Concerns

Bangalore: In a significant move, Meta has removed numerous advertisements after the Indian government highlighted a concerning trend of Facebook and Instagram ads utilizing sexually explicit content to entice users into downloading malware. This malware is designed to steal banking information and potentially drain users' accounts. According to government statistics, India suffered nearly $2.4 billion in cyber fraud losses in 2025, as scammers increasingly exploit the country's growing digital payment landscape.

The government reported that ads on Facebook and Instagram, operating under names like "Night Play" and "Kyss," were directing users to phishing sites. They noted a surge in financial scams involving what they termed "malicious Android applications disguised as pornography apps." After the government issued its advisory, Reuters discovered at least 39 such ads still active, many featuring sexually explicit video thumbnails to draw in clicks.

Following the alert from Reuters, Meta promptly removed all flagged ads. This action came after the news outlet sought comments regarding the advisory. This marks the first report of Meta's ad removal in response to the government's concerns. The policies of the US tech giant explicitly state that ads "must not contain adult nudity and sexual activity" and prohibit advertisements that employ deceptive or misleading tactics, including those aimed at scamming users.

This incident marks the second occasion in recent weeks where India has expressed worries about financial fraud on a significant tech platform. Previously, it was reported that the government instructed Google to deactivate hundreds of accounts on its Firebase platform after discovering that criminals were using it to impersonate major banks.

Internally, Meta had estimated that scam-related and banned goods advertising could account for about 10% of its projected revenue for 2024, approximately $16 billion, despite the company's claims of tightening regulations on such ads.

One of the ads, while still operational, directed users to a website promoting a video application that claimed to offer hundreds of pornographic videos and continuous content. To access this content, users were required to download a file named "Movexa.apk" outside of official app stores. The advisory from India warned that these apps could secretly access data stored on users' devices, capture one-time passwords and bank PINs, and transfer funds from accounts without the owner's consent.

Zomato's New Policy on Food Safety

New Delhi: On Monday, Zomato, a prominent food delivery service, declared a strict zero-tolerance stance against the sale of analogue food items, which include substitutes like analogue cheese and paneer, by restaurants on its platform. The company emphasized that it holds the authority to remove any restaurant that fails to comply with this new policy.

This decision aligns with heightened scrutiny on food safety, particularly following a recent crackdown by the Food and Drug Administration in Maharashtra and inspections conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) at luxury hotels in Delhi. Zomato announced that any dishes identified by restaurant partners as containing 'analogue dairy' will be immediately removed from its listings.

In a message sent to its restaurant partners, Zomato stated, "Our main goal is to guarantee that customers receive food that is accurately represented, safe, and meets high-quality standards."

The company further explained, "We are enforcing a zero-tolerance policy regarding the listing and distribution of food items that include analogue cheese, analogue paneer, and other analogue dairy products on our platform." This initiative aims to enhance transparency and food quality for consumers, adhering to food safety regulations.

Zomato urged its restaurant partners to take swift actions, such as switching to natural dairy products, eliminating items with analogue dairy from their menus if an immediate transition isn't possible, and reviewing product labels and ingredient declarations from suppliers to ensure accurate ingredient representation.

The company warned that any restaurant found in violation of this policy could face delisting from the platform and other actions as permitted by their policies and applicable laws. Additionally, Zomato retains the right to recover any losses or expenses incurred due to the delivery of non-compliant products.

Tim Cook's leadership at Apple has been a remarkable journey, transforming the company from the shadow of Steve Jobs to a $4 trillion powerhouse. Under his guidance, Apple's market capitalization soared, and new product categories emerged, including the Apple Watch and AirPods. However, challenges like the troubled launch of Apple Maps and the Vision Pro headset highlight the complexities of innovation. As Cook prepares to hand over the reins, the future of Apple, particularly in artificial intelligence, remains a critical focus. Discover how Cook's tenure has shaped Apple's legacy and what lies ahead for the tech giant.

A Transformative Journey at Apple

New Delhi: Tim Cook stepped into the role of CEO at Apple in August 2011, following Steve Jobs' departure due to health issues. His appointment came with immense expectations and skepticism. Now, as Apple prepares for a new leadership era, Cook's tenure illustrates how he guided the company from Jobs' legacy to a remarkable $4 trillion valuation.

Initially perceived as an expert in operations and supply chain rather than a visionary like Jobs, many questioned Cook's ability to maintain Apple's innovative momentum.

Fifteen years later, the results speak volumes. Under Cook's leadership, Apple's market capitalization skyrocketed from approximately $350 billion to about $4 trillion, with its stock price increasing nearly 25 times.

When Cook took charge, Apple shares were valued at around $13, and they have since surged by 2,359.2% to reach $319.70 at the latest close.

The company's annual revenue has also seen significant growth, climbing from roughly $108 billion in 2011 to over $400 billion today. This expansion has been fueled by strong iPhone sales, a rapidly expanding services sector, and ongoing global growth.

One of Cook's notable successes has been diversifying Apple beyond hardware. Services such as the App Store, Apple Music, and Apple Pay have emerged as vital revenue streams.

The services division now generates over $100 billion annually and boasts higher profit margins compared to Apple's hardware offerings.

Cook also led a pivotal shift in Apple's chip strategy, moving away from Intel dependency to designing its own processors for Mac computers through the Apple Silicon initiative.

This transition has granted Apple enhanced control over performance, product innovation, and its overall hardware-software ecosystem.

During his time, new product categories were also introduced. The Apple Watch debuted in 2015, focusing on health, fitness, and connectivity.

In 2016, AirPods were launched, transforming wireless earbuds into a mainstream product and creating another lucrative revenue source for Apple.

However, Cook's journey has not been without challenges. Apple Maps, released in 2012, faced significant backlash due to inaccuracies and incomplete data.

More recently, the Vision Pro mixed-reality headset, unveiled in 2023, has struggled to gain traction, with its high price point being a significant hurdle for consumers.

Additionally, Apple eventually scrapped its ambitious electric and autonomous vehicle initiative, Project Titan, after years of development, high costs, and an unclear commercial future.

Looking ahead, a pressing question for Apple's future is its approach to artificial intelligence. While competitors like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI have aggressively integrated AI into their products, Apple has adopted a more cautious strategy, focusing on privacy, software integration, and on-device computing.

This approach could prove to be a defining challenge for Cook's successor, John Ternus. Although Apple has made strides in incorporating AI into its ecosystem, the company faces increasing pressure to keep pace with rivals in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

In summary, Tim Cook's tenure at Apple has been characterized by remarkable financial growth, successful new ventures, and some setbacks. Nevertheless, the transformation in Apple's scale and influence is undeniable.

Significant Advancement in Cancer Therapy

A major breakthrough has been achieved in cancer treatment. American pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Merck have released results from their Phase 3 clinical trials for a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine. This innovative vaccine has significantly reduced the risk of melanoma patients experiencing a recurrence of the disease or its spread to other parts of the body after surgery. Experts have hailed this as a pivotal development in cancer therapy.

Understanding the New Therapy

This therapy combines Moderna's personalized mRNA vaccine, known as 'intismeran,' with Merck's immunotherapy drug, 'Keytruda' (pembrolizumab). The vaccine is tailored to the patient's tumor. After surgery, a sample of the tumor is analyzed to identify specific mutations (neoantigens), allowing for the creation of an mRNA vaccine that instructs the immune system on how to target cancer cells.

The entire process takes about six weeks. The vaccine is administered alongside Keytruda, enhancing the body's immune response.

Trial Results Overview

The Phase 3 trial, named INTerpath-001, involved 1,137 high-risk melanoma patients who had already undergone surgery and were at a heightened risk of cancer recurrence.

The results indicated that:

Patients receiving the vaccine in combination with Keytruda had a significantly lower risk of cancer recurrence compared to those receiving only Keytruda.

The risk of distant metastasis was also reduced.

Recent advancements in cholesterol management have emerged with the gene-editing therapy VERVE-102, which has shown a remarkable ability to lower LDL cholesterol levels by up to 62% in initial trials. While the results are promising, further research is necessary to determine its long-term safety and effectiveness. This innovative treatment could potentially change the landscape for patients with high cholesterol, especially those requiring ongoing management. However, it remains in the clinical development phase, and its availability as a standard treatment is still uncertain. Read on to learn more about this groundbreaking therapy and its implications for future cholesterol management.

Promising Advances in Cholesterol Management

Recent medical research has unveiled a significant advancement in lowering bad cholesterol, specifically LDL-C. A novel gene-editing therapy, known as VERVE-102, has demonstrated a substantial reduction in LDL cholesterol levels following a single dose in initial clinical trials. However, it is premature to consider this treatment as widely available for patients, as it is still in the clinical development phase.

62% Reduction in LDL After One Dose

The VERVE-102 study was conducted as part of the Phase 1b trial named Heart-2, which involved 35 adults suffering from conditions like familial hypercholesterolemia or early coronary artery disease. Participants received a one-time intravenous infusion of VERVE-102.

In the group that received the highest dosage, an average reduction of 62% in LDL-C levels was observed. Additionally, the PCSK9 protein levels dropped by an average of 88%. Researchers noted that some participants maintained these effects during extended follow-up periods.

Mechanism of Action for VERVE-102

VERVE-102 operates as a base-editing gene therapy, targeting the PCSK9 gene in the liver. By inhibiting the activity of the PCSK9 protein, the body becomes more efficient at removing LDL from the bloodstream, thereby lowering bad cholesterol levels.

This is why scientists are considering it as a potential one-time therapy rather than a medication requiring repeated doses. However, the long-term effects and safety of this treatment still need to be evaluated in larger, extended clinical studies.

Encouraging Early Results, But Caution Advised

The primary goal of the Phase 1b study is to assess the safety and initial effects of the new therapy. No serious treatment-related adverse events were reported during the VERVE-102 study, although some participants experienced mild to moderate infusion-related reactions and temporary laboratory changes.

While these results are indeed promising, it is too early to claim that a single injection will permanently control cholesterol levels for everyone.

Further Trials Needed

Currently, VERVE-102 remains an investigational treatment. According to ClinicalTrials.gov, the Heart-2 study is at the Phase 1b level, focusing on evaluating its safety, tolerability, and LDL-C reduction capabilities. Future larger studies will determine the therapy's effectiveness and safety, as well as identify which patients may benefit the most.

The company has announced plans to include participants in a Phase 2 study for VERVE-102 in 2026, indicating that this treatment is not yet an alternative to conventional cholesterol medications.

Could This Be the Future of Cholesterol Treatment?

If subsequent clinical trials yield positive results regarding safety and efficacy, gene-editing technologies like VERVE-102 could revolutionize treatment for patients with high LDL levels. This is particularly relevant for individuals requiring ongoing treatment to maintain low LDL levels.

For now, it is best viewed as a potential new therapy rather than an established treatment. The ultimate benefits and risks will only become clear following extensive, controlled clinical trials.

Significance of Space Docking Technology

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) considers space docking technology crucial for upcoming complex space missions. This capability allows two spacecraft to come together safely in orbit and separate when necessary, forming the foundation for several significant missions in India's future. According to ISRO, in missions requiring multiple rocket launches, in-space docking becomes essential.

Understanding Space Docking Technology

In simple terms, space docking refers to the process of connecting two spacecraft in orbit. This operation must be executed with high precision, as both vehicles are moving at high speeds around the Earth.

Initially, the two spacecraft are brought close to each other. Their relative speed and position are then controlled to ensure a safe connection. Once docked, the two vehicles can operate as a single unit.

ISRO has demonstrated the necessary capabilities for docking and undocking through its SpaDeX mission.

SpaDeX Mission: Paving the Way for New Possibilities

The SpaDeX mission was developed to showcase docking technology between two small spacecraft. In this mission, SDX01 acted as the 'Chaser' and SDX02 as the 'Target.'

The mission's goal extended beyond merely connecting the two vehicles; it also aimed to develop capabilities for controlling their relative positions and speeds in space, operations post-docking, and undocking.

With this achievement, India joins a select group of nations that have demonstrated indigenous space docking capabilities.

Importance for Future Lunar Missions

The most significant application of docking technology may be in future lunar missions. ISRO has stated that technologies like SpaDeX are vital for autonomous docking capabilities required for missions such as Chandrayaan-4.

Chandrayaan-4 aims to develop and demonstrate the technology for returning samples from the Moon. Such complex missions may necessitate launching different parts of the spacecraft separately and then connecting them in space.

Crucial for the Indian Space Station

The Indian Space Station, known as Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS), is a key project in India's space ambitions. Under the government's Space Vision 2047, the goal is to establish a space station by 2035.

To construct such a station, various modules will need to be sent to space and connected. This is why docking technology is considered vital for the construction and operation of BAS.

According to government plans, the first module of BAS is expected to be launched by 2028, with the entire station aimed for completion by 2035.

Applications in Human Space Missions

The significance of docking technology is not limited to robotic or lunar missions. It will also be essential for future human space flights.

Connecting spacecraft to the space station, transferring crew or supplies between modules, and conducting long-duration missions in space—all these activities will rely heavily on docking capabilities.

India's human space program is evolving beyond Gaganyaan, aiming for sustained human presence in low Earth orbit.

Beyond Simple Connections

In the future, space docking technology could also be utilized for satellite servicing. A spacecraft could dock with a malfunctioning satellite to provide fuel or repairs.

Additionally, capabilities for transferring power between docked spacecraft have been tested. ISRO included electrical power transfer between docked vehicles as part of SpaDeX's objectives.

Future Challenges in Docking Experiments

India is now advancing this technology further. As of 2026, ISRO is working on additional SpaDeX experiments in preparation for the Indian Space Station. These experiments aim to test more complex capabilities based on previous docking demonstrations.

This will gradually strengthen the technologies necessary for future human space missions and lunar expeditions.

A Key Component of India's Space Vision 2047

India has laid out an extensive roadmap for the space sector leading up to 2047. This includes projects like the Indian Space Station, ambitions to land an Indian on the Moon, further missions of Gaganyaan, and next-generation launch vehicles.

Achieving these ambitious goals will require more than just powerful rockets. Complex technologies for controlling, connecting, separating spacecraft, and ensuring safe returns will be essential. Docking is a critical link in this technological chain.

Conclusion

Space docking technology represents not just a technical achievement for India but could become a foundational capability for future major space missions. SpaDeX has provided significant experience in this area, and its applications can be seen in ambitious projects like Chandrayaan-4, the Indian Space Station, and future human space missions.

As India progresses beyond Earth's orbit towards the Moon and long-duration space missions, docking technology will increasingly become a vital component of its space capabilities.

His insights into weak intermolecular forces have reshaped the understanding of crystal structures, making him a leading figure in the field. This article delves into his scientific journey and the implications of his work.

Recognition for Pioneering Work in Crystal Engineering

Professor Emeritus Gautam R. Desiraju from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has received the esteemed 14th Ewald Prize from the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). This accolade recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to crystal engineering and his innovative research on molecular interactions that shape the structure and characteristics of crystals.

The award, one of the highest honors in the field of crystallography, was conferred upon Professor Desiraju on August 11 in Calgary, Canada, during the International Congress of Crystallography.

Presented every three years, the Ewald Prize honors exceptional contributions to crystallography. Professor Desiraju was specifically acknowledged for his role in establishing the concept of supramolecular synthons and for highlighting the significance of weak hydrogen and halogen bonds in both molecular crystals and biological systems.

His research has revolutionized crystal engineering, transforming it from a descriptive field into a predictive and design-focused science, with applications spanning pharmaceuticals to advanced functional materials.

In addition to his role at IIT Mandi, Professor Desiraju is also a Professor Emeritus at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru and a Distinguished Professor at IIT Mandi’s IKS MHA. His extensive research has centered on understanding molecular interactions and how they lead to the formation of crystalline structures, enabling the intentional design of materials with specific properties.

Upon receiving the award, Professor Desiraju remarked that the Ewald Prize is considered one of the highest accolades a structural chemist or biologist can achieve, emphasizing the rigorous and confidential selection process involved.

IIT Mandi Director Professor Laxmidhar Behera congratulated Professor Desiraju, stating that this recognition is a significant source of pride for both IIT Mandi and Indian science. He noted that Professor Desiraju’s groundbreaking research has greatly enhanced the understanding of molecular interactions and opened new avenues in pharmaceuticals and advanced materials.

A Journey Driven by Curiosity

Professor Desiraju’s scientific exploration was sparked by a fundamental question: Why do crystals form the structures they do?

While conducting research at the University of Illinois, he found that the prevailing belief was that organic crystal structures were primarily determined by close molecular packing. However, Desiraju began to investigate exceptions—crystals whose structures could not be explained by traditional packing theories.

His focus shifted to weak intermolecular forces, particularly the C—H···O interaction, which was then considered too weak to significantly influence structure. His collaborative research with Thomas Steiner helped establish these interactions as genuine weak hydrogen bonds with crucial structural implications.

Today, such interactions are acknowledged not only in molecular crystals but also in biological systems, where subtle molecular forces can lead to significant functional outcomes.

Transforming Crystal Engineering

One of Professor Desiraju’s most impactful contributions is the concept of the supramolecular synthon, introduced in a pivotal review in 1995.

Drawing inspiration from Nobel laureate E.J. Corey’s retrosynthetic analysis, Desiraju suggested that crystals could be approached similarly to how synthetic chemists view molecules—as entities that can be designed.

The supramolecular synthon concept identifies recurring structural units held together by predictable intermolecular interactions, providing researchers with a framework to anticipate how molecules might assemble into crystals and facilitating the intentional design of crystalline materials.

This approach has evolved from simple binary and ternary co-crystals to increasingly complex multicomponent systems, which Desiraju refers to as the 'Mount Everest of supramolecular solid-state synthesis.'

Real-World Applications in Pharmaceuticals

The significance of crystal engineering is becoming increasingly evident in practical applications, particularly within the pharmaceutical industry.

Pharmaceutical co-crystals can enhance the solubility, stability, and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs without altering the active pharmaceutical ingredient. Several medications utilizing crystal-engineering techniques have already been introduced to the market.

The field is also tackling major scientific challenges such as polymorphism and crystal structure prediction. Professor Desiraju believes that artificial intelligence could lead to significant advancements in crystal structure prediction within the next five to ten years.

His recent investigations have also delved into mechanically responsive crystals—materials capable of bending, slipping, or returning to their original shape—pointing towards new opportunities in smart and functional materials.

Groundbreaking Research from IIT Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar, in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University in the USA, has made a theoretical breakthrough by predicting a novel two-dimensional material that showcases i-wave altermagnetism.

This discovery holds the potential to revolutionize the development of electronic devices that are not only faster but also more compact and energy-efficient. The applications could span high-density memory, spin-based transistors, terahertz communication, and advanced quantum technologies, as highlighted in a statement from IIT.

The research, spearheaded by Manish Kumar Mohanta from the Department of Physics at IIT Bhubaneswar, has been published in the prestigious journal Nano Letters, which focuses on nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Altermagnetism is gaining traction in condensed matter physics due to its unique combination of properties found in both traditional magnets and antiferromagnets.

Unlike standard magnets, altermagnetic materials generate minimal stray magnetic fields, allowing for closer placement of electronic components without the risk of magnetic interference, according to the institute.

Additionally, these materials are capable of generating and controlling spin-polarized electrical currents, a crucial aspect for the advancement of spintronics.

In contrast to conventional electronics that rely solely on the electric charge of electrons for information processing, spintronics leverages the intrinsic spin of electrons, paving the way for devices that are faster and more energy-efficient.

The research indicates that a monolayer of FeCl₃, just three atoms thick, exhibits a rare form of i-wave symmetry altermagnetism.

This intricate magnetic state could facilitate precise manipulation of electron spins, offering a promising foundation for the creation of ultrafast, low-power electronic technologies.

As the demand for high-speed computing systems that are energy-efficient continues to rise, this discovery points towards a new avenue for designing future electronic devices that enhance speed, efficiency, and reliability. Such innovations could eventually impact a wide range of technologies, including data storage, artificial intelligence hardware, wearable electronics, terahertz devices, and quantum information systems.

Manish Kumar Mohanta emphasized that this finding broadens the spectrum of altermagnetic materials and lays the groundwork for developing practical spintronic devices that could surpass current technologies in speed, compactness, and energy efficiency.

Revolutionary Images of the Sun's Surface

In a groundbreaking achievement, researchers have successfully captured the sun's surface in unprecedented detail, unveiling a captivating and dynamic appearance. While it's unsafe to gaze directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection, scientists utilized the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, situated in Maui, Hawaii, to observe its intense surface.

Initially, the images were taken to calibrate and assess the telescope's capabilities. However, upon reviewing the results, the team discovered they had recorded the sun's brilliant outer layer at an unmatched resolution.

Among the findings were peculiar, feathery patterns undulating across the solar surface. Solar physicist Ruizhu Chen from Stanford University, who was not part of the study, remarked, "It reminds me of famous paintings, like the swirling skies in Van Gogh's Starry Night."

The researchers observed waves of instability on the sun's surface, caused by magnetized plasma interacting at varying speeds, akin to the ripples formed when wind disturbs water. This phenomenon, known to occur on Earth and other planets such as Jupiter and Saturn, had never before been documented at such a level on the solar surface, according to Friedrich Woger, a co-author of the study from the National Solar Observatory.

The results of this research were published on Wednesday in the journal Nature. Scientists are eager to understand the sun's internal mechanisms to better monitor significant energy bursts known as coronal mass ejections, which can impact Earth. These events can lead to solar storms that disrupt GPS communications and create stunning auroras.

With the moon becoming a focal point for future exploration, experts stress the need for careful monitoring and management of lunar impacts.

Collision Confirmed: SpaceX Rocket Hits the Moon

A SpaceX rocket, which had launched two lunar landers, has reportedly collided with the moon, as anticipated, after veering off its intended path for over a year, according to scientists.

While the official confirmation of the crash at a speed of 5,400 mph (8,700 kph) is still pending, experts in space tracking believe the impact was unavoidable.

This incident adds to the growing concern over lunar debris, a situation that could escalate as the United States and China compete to send astronauts back to the moon. In 2022, a Chinese rocket unintentionally impacted the lunar surface, and many other rocket remnants likely struck the moon unnoticed in previous decades.

Julianna Scheiman from SpaceX stated that the company is collaborating with NASA to prevent future incidents, clarifying that this crash was not intentional. She explained that a mix of solar activity and gravitational forces inadvertently set the rocket on a collision course with the moon.

Retired astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell observed the 4-ton upper stage of the rocket heading directly towards the moon on Tuesday night.

The expected impact site is a desolate area near Einstein Crater on the moon's sunlit western edge, a location that is particularly challenging to observe from Earth.

McDowell expressed confidence that the rocket is now fragmented across the lunar surface near Einstein Crater, stating, "There’s no doubt in my mind that the rocket is now in teeny, little pieces scattered over the moon near Einstein Crater."

He added, "As a physicist, I know that what goes up must come down."

Even if an asteroid had collided with the rocket during its descent, the fragments would still have impacted the same area, according to McDowell.

Observers on Earth were aware that witnessing the dust and rock plume from the impact would be nearly impossible, let alone seeing the flash of light from the collision. Spacecraft in orbit had the best chance of detecting any activity or at least capturing images of the crater afterward.

Dutch astronomer Marco Langbroek aimed his telescope at the moon during the expected time of impact but reported no success.

Langbroek acknowledged the challenge, stating, "We knew this would be a long shot," but like McDowell, he is convinced that the rocket met its end.

Visual confirmation of the impact will depend on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which is expected to capture images of the crater next week.

The Falcon rocket's upper stage, a large cylinder over 40 feet (12 meters) long, launched two private lunar landers from Cape Canaveral on January 15, 2025. After successfully placing Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost and ispace's Resilience on a lunar trajectory, the upper stage became stranded. While Resilience failed, Blue Ghost successfully landed, marking a milestone as the first private spacecraft to do so.

The moon is becoming a focal point for space exploration, with NASA planning a surge of robotic missions in the coming years to establish a sustainable lunar base. SpaceX and Blue Origin, led by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos respectively, are set to provide lunar landers for NASA's Artemis astronauts.

Musk's Starship is progressing well in test flights from Texas, while Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander has yet to launch. One or both landers are expected to participate in next year's Artemis III mission, which will involve a docking rehearsal in Earth's orbit, with a potential lunar landing by astronauts occurring as early as 2028.

McDowell remarked, "Things are going to get a lot busier near the moon. At that point, an impact like this on the lunar surface, kicking up significant amounts of dust, will not be acceptable."

WhatsApp is initiating a trial for age verification methods to align with India's upcoming Digital Personal Data Protection Act. This optional test aims to ensure user privacy, as age information will not be shared with others. The move has sparked discussions about potential future regulations and the implications of new features like usernames. With nearly 500 million users in India, WhatsApp is navigating government scrutiny regarding online safety and privacy. Stay informed about how these changes may affect your experience on the platform.

WhatsApp Implements Age Verification Measures

New Delhi: WhatsApp is currently trialing methods to help users verify their age as part of its compliance with forthcoming regulations in India, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP).

The platform has emphasized that age-related data will remain confidential and will not be disclosed to other users. Participation in this age verification test is voluntary, and users can continue using WhatsApp without confirming their age.

A spokesperson for WhatsApp stated, "To adhere to new laws in India such as the DPDP, we are exploring privacy-focused methods for age confirmation. This will not alter the functionality of WhatsApp or the user experience. We recognize that age information is sensitive and will not be shared with other users."

The platform's prompt to some users to input their birth dates, citing legal requirements, has sparked discussions online about potential future age-verification protocols in India.

Earlier this week, IT Secretary S. Krishnan noted that this initiative might relate to the DPDP Act, which addresses age verification.

"We need to confirm this with them as we approach the deadline," Krishnan remarked.

Regarding the ministry's actions on username notifications, Krishnan indicated that the matter extends beyond WhatsApp to all messaging applications. He highlighted two key aspects: the risks of impersonation linked to username features and the privacy implications.

If the IT ministry is considering a unified set of standards for all messaging services, Krishnan stated, "We are reviewing their feedback and will make a final decision."

The username feature allows users to communicate on the platform without revealing their phone numbers.

Last month, the government issued a notice to WhatsApp, owned by Meta, questioning the proposed username feature due to concerns that it could significantly heighten risks of online fraud, phishing, and impersonation.

The government instructed WhatsApp not to implement the feature until satisfactory consultations are completed. WhatsApp boasts nearly 500 million users in India.

In the notice, the government requested Meta to justify why actions should not be taken under the IT Act regarding WhatsApp's proposed feature that may exacerbate cybercrime. It also reminded Meta of its obligations as a major social media intermediary under the IT Act.

Following the notice, WhatsApp responded to the government, assuring that it would refrain from launching the feature in India until discussions are finalized.

After addressing WhatsApp, the IT ministry also sent notices to Telegram and Signal, questioning their existing username features and how they are managing concerns related to fraud and impersonation.

As they prepare for further global expansion, the founders emphasize the importance of connection and mentorship for aspiring entrepreneurs. Their journey is a testament to Odisha's growing technological landscape.

The Genesis of SecurEyes

In Bhubaneswar, during the mid-1990s, as cyber cafes began to emerge and the internet was still a novelty, two young men from Cuttack were quietly laying the groundwork for a significant technological revolution. Karmendra Kohli and Simant Patnaik were pursuing their Master of Computer Applications (MCA) at Utkal University at that time. Fast forward two decades, their vision has materialized into reality. What began in a rented rooftop room in Delhi with just four individuals has transformed into SecurEyes, a global cybersecurity firm valued at ₹100 crores, entirely self-funded without external investors.

Today, SecurEyes operates eight international offices and serves over 1,000 major clients, including central ministries of the Indian government, the central bank, and numerous multinational corporations.

The Idea Takes Shape

The concept for SecurEyes emerged during the founders' MCA studies. They decided to study together in Hyderabad for their final semester, where they created a simple folder named 'SecurEyes' on a shared desktop computer, without any formal business plan in place. Recognizing the importance of timing, they devised a strategic plan. Simant traveled to Japan to specialize in enterprise solutions, while Karmendra went to the USA to master internet security. Eventually, they reunited to launch their venture.

Karmendra Kohli, the CEO and Director, reflects, "People had immense trust in computer systems, even though they were essentially 'black boxes' to them. We realized that cybersecurity would become crucial in the future."

Starting from Humble Beginnings

SecurEyes was officially launched in 2006 from a friend's rooftop apartment in Delhi, starting with just four team members. In the early years, they had to educate clients about the necessity of cybersecurity from scratch. The founders often made cold calls and rode motorcycles around the NCR region, explaining the need for digital security to traditional businesses.

The US Federal Communications Commission has enacted a ban on the import of new humanoid robots and power inverters, primarily aimed at addressing national security concerns related to China. This move is expected to complicate US-China relations ahead of a significant summit between leaders of both nations. With China dominating the humanoid robot market, the ban could have far-reaching effects on technology collaborations and supply chains. Analysts suggest that while this may protect US developers from competition, it will not significantly impede China's advancements in robotics. The situation continues to evolve as both countries navigate their technological rivalry.

New Restrictions on Humanoid Robots and Power Inverters

Hong Kong: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States has announced a ban on the import of new humanoid robots and power inverters, citing concerns over national security, particularly aimed at China.

This decision is poised to strain US-China relations, especially with a scheduled meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump in September. China currently holds a commanding 85% share of the global humanoid robot market.

The FCC's restrictions also extend to quadruped robots, commonly known as robotic dogs. The agency expressed that these advanced robots could pose cybersecurity threats and other national security issues, while also highlighting the vulnerabilities in US supply chains due to offshore production.

The prohibition on power inverters, which convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) and are essential for renewable energy systems, data centers, and household devices, could have extensive implications.

Brendan Carr, the chairperson of the FCC, stated that the intention behind this move is to 'secure America’s critical supply chains,' emphasizing that the bans specifically target 'new versions' of these imports.

These actions are part of a broader trend of US restrictions on Chinese imports, including drones, and limitations on the export of advanced technologies to China.

Additionally, the US is contemplating regulations on the use of Chinese open-source artificial intelligence models, as Chinese AI technology continues to advance rapidly.

Samm Sacks, a senior fellow at the New America think tank, noted that these developments could lead to potential conflicts as the Trump-Xi summit approaches.

China has been aggressively increasing its use of robotics, supported by policies that bolster its tech sector. Analysts from Morgan Stanley predict that the humanoid robot market in China could reach USD 15 billion by 2030.

According to Kangyuxiao Li, an analyst at Morningstar, Chinese manufacturers are outpacing their international competitors in production and cost reduction.

He added that limiting their access to the US market removes a significant opportunity and shields US developers from price competition. However, this will not significantly hinder China's overall humanoid robot development due to its vast domestic manufacturing capabilities and other export opportunities.

In 2025, approximately 15,000 humanoid robots are expected to be shipped globally, with China's Unitree and AGIBOT each shipping over 5,000 units, while US companies like Tesla and Figure AI shipped only a few hundred, according to Omdia.

In response, China's Foreign Ministry criticized the US for misusing national security to suppress Chinese enterprises, asserting that China will take 'all necessary measures' to protect the rights of its businesses.

Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the ministry, remarked that protectionism does not enhance US competitiveness and ultimately harms American companies and consumers.

The new restrictions may also disrupt collaborations between US and Chinese tech firms, as noted by Lian Jye Su, a chief analyst at Omdia.

For instance, NVIDIA recently unveiled a humanoid robot reference design utilizing the chassis from China's Unitree.

The Pentagon has also listed Unitree and several other prominent Chinese tech firms as having connections to the Chinese military.

Significant Ground Movement Detected

Recent satellite imagery following a devastating earthquake in Venezuela has astonished scientists. Data collected from the NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) mission, a collaboration between India's space agency and its American counterpart, indicates that the earthquake caused the ground to shift by nearly 60 centimeters (approximately 2 feet) in certain areas. This significant alteration has transformed the landscape in multiple locations.

According to researchers, this earthquake occurred after two powerful tremors struck northern Venezuela on June 24. The most severe impacts were felt around the capital, Caracas, and the coastal city of La Guaira. The NISAR satellite compared radar images taken before and after the earthquake, revealing that the ground had shifted east-west by about 60 centimeters in several regions.

One of the standout features of the NISAR satellite is its InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology, which can measure minute changes in the Earth's surface even in adverse weather conditions or darkness. Scientists analyzed radar images from June 13 and 18, prior to the earthquake, and from June 25 and 30, afterward, to create an accurate map of the ground displacement.

Experts noted that this was the first instance where NISAR's Urgent Response System was utilized to assess ground changes following a major earthquake with such speed and detail. The data gathered has provided insights into the pressure exerted on fault lines and the direction of ground movement, aiding in better risk assessment for future earthquakes and enhancing the planning of relief and rescue operations.

The earthquake inflicted substantial damage to buildings, roads, and infrastructure. International reports suggest that this disaster has cost Venezuela billions of dollars and affected thousands of individuals. Reconstruction efforts in the impacted areas are still ongoing.

This incident underscores that modern satellite technology extends beyond space exploration; it plays a crucial role in monitoring natural disasters, assessing damage, and preparing for future events. The NISAR mission by ISRO and NASA is anticipated to become a vital scientific tool for monitoring earthquakes, landslides, floods, and other natural calamities worldwide.

Understanding Marine Heatwaves in the UK

In Southampton, UK, the recent warm sea temperatures, reaching 20°C or higher, have provided a refreshing escape from the heat. However, these temperatures are part of an alarming trend, marking the third significant marine heatwave in just four years.

While the immediate dangers include increased drowning incidents, the broader implications for marine life are severe, impacting everything from tiny plankton to massive whales.

Globally, extended periods of elevated sea temperatures have led to the decline of vital species like kelp, seagrass, and corals.

These marine heatwaves have resulted in the death or altered life cycles of marine mammals and shellfish, affecting other species reliant on them, such as seabirds. This disruption leads to shifts in species distribution and significant changes in ecosystems, threatening the stability of oceanic food webs.

The UK's initial major marine heatwave occurred in June 2023, followed by another in May 2025, and the current one in July 2026. The full extent of these heatwaves' impacts remains unclear, as some effects may take years to manifest.

Extreme temperatures have been linked to harmful algal blooms in UK waters. These blooms thrive under conditions of nutrient availability, warmth, sunlight, and calm waters.

Such algal blooms can produce toxins that accumulate in shellfish, posing serious health risks to humans who consume them. Consequently, the UK government collaborates with food safety authorities to monitor marine biotoxins actively.

The warmer waters may also explain the increased sightings of octopus along the southern coasts of Devon and Cornwall, which have begun to prey on local crab and lobster populations, altering the dynamics of local fisheries.

Additionally, a rise in jellyfish sightings has been noted, although early reports suggest this may be due to more beachgoers observing them.

Fishermen have also reported a northward shift in cold-water species like cod, which could impact seabird breeding and survival rates.

Seagrass beds and kelp forests, which create their own microclimates, are also at risk from marine heatwaves, as warmer waters hinder their ability to shelter marine species.

The social and economic ramifications of these changes in fisheries and ocean health are substantial.

In Western Australia, consistently warm seas led to the term 'marine heatwave' being coined in 2011, resulting in the destruction of seagrass meadows and the decline of various marine species. Some ecosystems took years to recover, while others have not returned to their former state.

Addressing the Challenges

There is an urgent need to comprehend the cascading effects of marine heatwaves and identify which marine species are most at risk.

Management strategies, including harvest regulations and catch quotas, can help protect breeding populations and juvenile fish, ensuring sustainable fish and shellfish populations. The sooner these measures are enacted, the more effective they will be.

Marine scientists are still working to grasp the full impact of marine heatwaves. A diverse group of experts has pinpointed 40 critical questions aimed at enhancing our understanding of the risks and opportunities presented by marine heatwaves in the UK. These inquiries focus on the effects on marine ecosystems, the services they provide, the blue economy, and societal impacts.

Notably, the marine heatwaves of 2023 and 2025 did not occur during August, the warmest month for UK waters, raising concerns that additional heat could push conditions beyond critical limits.

If the current marine heatwave persists into August, the potential consequences could be severe, underscoring the urgency of these priority questions.

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs has revealed that President Droupadi Murmu will embark on state visits to Moldova, North Macedonia, and Romania from July 19 to July 25. The objective of this trip is to enhance bilateral relations across various sectors, including trade, technology, and cultural exchanges.

This three-nation journey is significant as it marks the inaugural bilateral visits by an Indian president to both Moldova and North Macedonia, as stated by MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George during a press briefing.

Additionally, President Murmu's visit to Romania will be noteworthy as it is the first state visit by an Indian president to the country in over thirty years, with the last visit occurring in 1994.

George emphasized that this tour underscores India's increasing engagement with Central and Eastern Europe, reinforcing its commitment to fostering partnerships in the region. It also aligns with India's broader strategy of strengthening ties with the European Union.

The visit is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing India's collaboration in the areas of trade, technology, and tourism.

On July 20, President Murmu will arrive in Moldova at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. This visit is historic as it is the first time an Indian president will visit Moldova.

During her stay, President Murmu will engage in discussions with her Moldovan counterpart, as well as meet with the Prime Minister and the President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu.

President Murmu will meet with the interim Prime Minister, the President of the Senate, and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, as well as members of the Romania-India Parliamentary Friendship Group.

She will also address the India-Romania Business Forum and interact with the Indian community.

Romania is recognized as a key partner within the European Union, and with the anticipated conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, the economic partnership is expected to strengthen significantly.

Both North Macedonia and Romania have condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and expressed their solidarity with India in combating terrorism.

President Murmu's three-nation tour highlights India's commitment to enhancing its bilateral relationships with these nations and its broader engagement with Eastern Europe.

On July 15, gold prices saw a decline in major cities, providing a potential opportunity for buyers. Experts attribute these changes to various global and domestic factors, including the strength of the dollar and international demand. As prices fluctuate, it's crucial for consumers to check local rates and consider additional costs like making charges and GST. Whether buying for investment or personal occasions, understanding market trends is essential. Stay informed about the latest economic indicators that could impact future gold prices.

Gold Price Trends in Major Cities

For those planning to purchase gold, there is some good news. On July 15, a decrease in gold prices was observed across several major cities in the country. The prices for 18-carat, 22-carat, and 24-carat gold have shown slight fluctuations in the jewelry market. Experts suggest that the variations in the international market, the movement of the dollar, and changing investor strategies are influencing the domestic market.

Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have reported minor declines in gold prices. However, it's important to note that prices may vary slightly depending on the city and the jeweler. Therefore, checking the latest rates in your area before making a purchase is essential.

Market analysts indicate that gold prices are affected by a range of global and domestic factors. Demand for gold in the international market, the strength of the US dollar, interest rates set by central banks, geopolitical tensions, and import duties all play a role in daily price fluctuations. This is why gold prices can change frequently.

Customers looking to buy jewelry should not only consider the gold rate but also check the making charges, GST, and BIS hallmark. Purchasing hallmarked jewelry guarantees purity and increases the likelihood of better resale value in the future.

Experts advise that if you are buying gold as an investment, the current price drop could present a good opportunity. For those purchasing jewelry for weddings or festivals, the current price levels are also considered favorable. However, it is wise to pay attention to market trends and expert advice before making any significant investments.

Amid ongoing market fluctuations, investors are keeping an eye on upcoming international economic indicators, the dollar's performance, and global events. If instability in the global market increases, gold prices may change again. Therefore, it is always advisable to confirm the latest rates before making any purchases or investments.

In the second quarter of 2026, global smartphone shipments experienced an 11% decline, the lowest since 2013, primarily due to a deepening memory shortage. Samsung regained its top position in the market, while Apple managed to grow its shipments without raising prices. The ongoing memory crisis has become the main challenge for the industry, affecting entry and mid-tier devices. Geopolitical tensions and rising costs further complicate the situation, leading to a challenging outlook for the rest of the year. Explore the full article for detailed insights into this significant market shift.

Significant Drop in Smartphone Shipments

New Delhi: A recent report indicates that global smartphone shipments fell by 11% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2026, marking the lowest figures for this period since 2013. This decline is largely attributed to a worsening memory shortage that has become a significant obstacle for the industry.

Preliminary data from Counterpoint Research's Market Monitor reveals that prices for DRAM and NAND memory continued to rise throughout the quarter. Memory suppliers have prioritized demand from AI data centers over consumer electronics, leading manufacturers to increase prices for consumers, especially for entry-level and mid-range devices. Samsung regained its position as the world's leading smartphone brand with a 24% market share in Q2, showing the most substantial growth among the top five brands. The company performed relatively well in markets like India and the Middle East, aided by better product availability, minimal price increases, and aggressive summer promotions that boosted flagship sales.

Apple also saw a 3% increase in shipments year-on-year during this quarter, achieving a record market share of 20%. Notably, it was the only major manufacturer that did not raise smartphone prices during this period.

According to senior analyst Shilpi Jain, the ongoing global memory crisis has become the primary factor hindering the smartphone industry. What began as a component shortage last year has escalated into a significant demand issue. Entry-level and mid-range devices, which represent a large portion of global smartphone sales, are becoming economically unviable at previous price points.

In addition to the memory shortage, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have driven up oil and shipping costs, further contributing to rising smartphone prices. This situation coincides with a broader economic squeeze characterized by slower global growth, increased inflation, and historically low consumer sentiment, which has particularly affected price-sensitive buyers. The outlook for the remainder of 2026 appears bleak, with Counterpoint projecting a total decline of around 14% in global smartphone shipments for the year, and the memory shortage is expected to continue into 2027.
