Preliminary Report on AI171 Plane Crash Submitted to Aviation Ministry

Initial Findings of the AI171 Incident
On Tuesday, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) presented its preliminary report regarding the AI171 plane crash to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. According to sources, this report is based on the initial findings of the investigation. Meanwhile, a significant meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is scheduled for today, which is expected to include top officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, such as the Secretary of Civil Aviation and the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Upcoming Public Disclosure of Investigation Report
The AAIB is set to publicly release its initial investigation report concerning the Air India crash in Ahmedabad within the next few days. Sources indicate that bureau officials informed a parliamentary committee about this timeline during a session on Wednesday. The DG of AAIB, GVG Yughandar, stated that the report, which pertains to one of the worst aviation disasters in recent decades and the first incident involving a Boeing Dreamliner, will be uploaded to the portal within 30 days.
Parliamentary Committee Discusses Aviation Safety
During the proceedings led by Sanjay Kumar Jha, a member of the Janata Dal (United), aviation safety concerns were prominently addressed. Over 97 representatives from various sectors of the aviation industry, including official agencies and airlines, shared their insights with the parliamentarians throughout the day-long meeting. Sources also mentioned that no preliminary report had been submitted to the Ministry of Civil Aviation by the AAIB.
Compliance with International Standards
Under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the AAIB is required to submit an initial report within 30 days of the accident. Jha described the meeting as comprehensive and thorough. The Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport for London on June 12, resulting in the deaths of over 250 individuals.
Investigation Progress and Safety Discussions
AAIB officials informed the transport, tourism, and culture committee that the aircraft's black box and voice recorder are intact and under analysis. They noted that assistance from foreign companies, including the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, has been sought for a detailed investigation. The AAIB commenced its inquiry the day after the accident, forming a team led by its DG, GVG Yughandar, in accordance with global standards.
Significant Parliamentary Meeting
This investigation marks a significant moment in India's aviation safety protocols. The committee meeting began at 10 AM and concluded around 6 PM, featuring presentations from leaders of all domestic airlines regarding air safety. Members from various political parties, including former Civil Aviation Minister and BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Congress members Kumari Shelja, Neeraj Dangi, and Imran Pratapgarhi, as well as BJP's Surendra Singh Nagar and Tapir Gao, participated.
Concerns Raised Over Regulatory Vacancies
Members discussed aviation safety extensively, questioning the safety standards being implemented by official agencies and private airlines. The recent crash in Ahmedabad has brought aviation safety issues to the forefront. Some members of the transport, tourism, and culture committee expressed concerns about the significant vacancies within the aviation regulatory body, DGCA, while others noted the agency's failure to implement several previous recommendations made by the committee.
Airline Executives Attend Meeting
Campbell Wilson, the CEO and Managing Director of Air India, was among the airline representatives present at the meeting. Many of these officials also attended the PAC meeting held on Tuesday. During the PAC session, the DGCA mentioned that it would establish a mechanism to prevent significant increases in air ticket prices, especially considering the recent Mahakumbh event and the aftermath of the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
