Donald Trump Engages with Syrian Leader in Riyadh: A New Era for the Middle East?

Historic Meeting in Riyadh
Riyadh: In a significant diplomatic move, US President Donald Trump convened with Syria's interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, alongside Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, in Riyadh on Wednesday.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared images of the meeting on social media, highlighting the gathering of these three influential leaders.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials were also in attendance during this pivotal discussion.
The meeting was notable for including a remote participation from Turkish President Erdogan, who joined the conversation via phone.
This diplomatic encounter followed Trump's announcement the previous evening regarding the lifting of sanctions on Syria.
Trump stated, "After consulting with the Crown Prince and President Erdogan, I will be lifting sanctions against Syria to provide them an opportunity for progress," during his address in Riyadh, where he elaborated on his vision for the region's future.
Earlier this month, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Al Qaeda commander, had met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, continuing his diplomatic efforts on behalf of Damascus.
Sharaa previously led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which played a crucial role in the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.
Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia marks the beginning of a four-day tour across the Middle East, which will also include stops in Qatar and the UAE.
Upon his arrival in Riyadh, Trump was warmly welcomed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at King Khalid International Airport, where he received a 21-gun salute and trumpet fanfare. The two leaders then enjoyed cordial discussions over Saudi coffee in the airport's VIP lounge.
Later, the Crown Prince hosted President Trump at the Royal Court in Al-Yamamah Palace.
In his address, Trump remarked, "A new generation of leaders is emerging, moving beyond the old conflicts and divisions, and creating a future where the Middle East is characterized by trade rather than turmoil; where technology is exported instead of terrorism; and where diverse nations and faiths collaborate to build rather than destroy."
