Shreyas Iyer's SoBo Mumbai Falcons Fall Short in T20 Mumbai League Final
A Disappointing Start to the Season
Shreyas Iyer's aspirations for a T20 championship faced another setback as his team, SoBo Mumbai Falcons, lost in the final of the T20 Mumbai League. This defeat came just a week after their IPL 2025 loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The final match, held at Wankhede Stadium on June 12, saw the Falcons overwhelmed by the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals.
Echoes of IPL 2025 Heartbreak
This recent loss mirrors the disappointment Iyer experienced just nine days earlier when his Punjab Kings fell to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025 final. Despite a strong performance throughout the league, PBKS could not secure the championship. Similarly, the Falcons, who had shown promise in the Mumbai League, succumbed to the pressure during the crucial match.
Falcons' Batting Struggles
After losing the toss, the SoBo Mumbai Falcons were asked to bat first. Their innings got off to a shaky start, with opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi scoring only 7 runs off 12 balls, and Ishan Mulchandani falling victim during the powerplay. Captain Iyer, batting at No. 3, struggled to stabilize the innings, hitting a six and a four before being dismissed early.
The innings gained momentum thanks to Mayuresh Tandel's impressive 50 runs off 32 balls and Harsh Aghav's aggressive 45 runs off 28 balls, who formed a crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 85 runs. The Falcons managed to post a total of 157 runs after their 20 overs.
South Central's Dominant Chase
Mumbai South Central started their chase strongly, with captain Siddesh Lad and Sahil Bhagwanta Jadhav scoring 32 runs in just three overs. Although both were dismissed quickly—Siddesh for 15 and Sahil for 22—their early contributions set a solid foundation.
Chinmay Sutar led the chase with a composed 53 runs off 49 balls, while Awais Naushad Khan finished the innings with a quick 38 runs off 24 balls. Their partnership ensured that Mumbai South Central secured victory with four balls to spare, winning the match in 19.2 overs.
Rohit Sharma Presents Runners-Up Cheque
Bowler Vaibhav Mali played a pivotal role in limiting the Falcons' score, taking 2 wickets in his four overs.
Rohit Sharma, the ODI captain of India and the league's brand ambassador, presented the runners-up cheque to a visibly disappointed Shreyas Iyer. Despite the heartbreak of the loss, Iyer encouraged his support staff to take pride in their journey and learn from both their successes and failures throughout the season.
