Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] May 16: Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav extended his congratulations to captain Rohit Sharma as the 'Rohit Sharma Stand' was inaugurated at the renowned Wankhede Stadium on Friday.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, Suryakumar expressed, "Congratulations @rohitsharma45 on your remarkable achievements on the cricket field, transitioning from finisher to opener and now our captain. You have inspired us and made us proud in every role. A leader like you, who leads from the front and transforms the game, is rare. You have not only changed the game but also the mindset, the atmosphere in the dressing room, and the definition of captaincy. As I’ve said before, good things come to good people, and you truly deserve all this and more. Wankhede has become even more iconic."
The unveiling ceremony saw Rohit Sharma, along with his family, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, NCP-SCP chief Sharad Pawar, and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik, in attendance.
During his speech, Rohit shared, "What is happening today was beyond my wildest dreams. Growing up, my aspiration was to play for Mumbai and India. No one envisions this. To have my name alongside the legends of the game is indescribable. This moment is even more special as I am still an active player. Although I have retired from two formats, I continue to play one." Rohit is celebrated as one of the finest opening batsmen in cricket history.
Across 499 international matches, he has amassed 19,700 runs with an average of 42.18, including 49 centuries and 108 fifties, with a personal best of 264 runs. He holds the record for the most double hundreds in ODIs, and his score of 264 remains the highest individual score in ODI history.
Rohit has led India to victory in two ICC Champions Trophy tournaments and one T20 World Cup, each as captain. He has captained the national team in all formats. Recently, the 38-year-old announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the upcoming five-match tour to England, which will kick off India's ICC World Test Championship campaign for 2025-27 starting June 20.
