Prasidh Krishna's Struggles in Leeds Test

Leeds [UK], June 23: Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna faced a challenging outing during the first Test against England, recording an unfortunate milestone with figures of 3/128. His economy rate of 6.40 is now the highest for any Indian bowler who has bowled a minimum of 20 overs in a single spell.

Despite securing key wickets, including those of Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, and Jamie Smith, Krishna endured significant punishment from the English batsmen. This performance surpassed Varun Aaron's previous record of 5.91, set during a match against Australia in 2014.

The day concluded with India holding a 96-run lead after a thrilling session of Test cricket, which was largely dominated by the English side. At the close of play, India stood at 90/2, with KL Rahul (47*) and captain Shubman Gill (6*) remaining at the crease.

India began the final session with a slight edge, having taken a six-run lead over England, who were dismissed for 465 runs in their first innings, in response to India's total of 471.

India's innings got off to a rocky start as Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored a century in the first innings, was dismissed for just four runs by Brydon Carse, caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. The team was quickly at 16/1 in just over three overs. KL Rahul, however, looked solid, hitting two boundaries against Chris Woakes, while Sai Sudharsan also managed to score a four on his first delivery.

Rahul displayed caution against the pace attack, leaving balls wisely but capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Together, he and Sudharsan guided India to 50 runs in 12.1 overs.

Sudharsan and Rahul worked to stabilize the innings, hitting well-timed boundaries. However, in the 21st over, captain Ben Stokes made a crucial breakthrough, dismissing Sudharsan for 30 runs off 48 balls, which included four boundaries. Sudharsan's promising innings ended prematurely, leaving India at 82/2 after a 66-run partnership.

Rain interrupted the final session, with Rahul and Gill at the crease, the latter not out on 6.

England resumed the second session at 327/5, with Harry Brook (57*) and Jamie Smith (29*) at the crease. Brook continued his aggressive batting, while Smith contributed significantly with 40 runs off 52 balls, including five fours and a six. Chris Woakes (38 off 55 balls) and Brydon Carse (22 off 23 balls) also added valuable runs.

Brook narrowly missed a century, scoring 99 runs off 112 balls, featuring 11 fours and two sixes, before being caught by Shardul Thakur off Krishna's bowling. A partnership of 55 runs between Woakes and Carse helped England surpass the 400-run mark, putting pressure on India before Jasprit Bumrah stepped up.

Bumrah (5/83) and Krishna (3/128) were the standout bowlers as England was bowled out for 465 runs.

England began the day at 209/3, with Ollie Pope (100*) and Brook (0*) at the crease. Prasidh struck early, dismissing Pope for 106 runs off 137 balls, which included 14 fours. Brook then formed significant partnerships with Ben Stokes (20 off 52 balls) and Jamie Smith, pushing England past the 300-run mark by the end of the session. Pope's century and Ben Duckett's contribution of 62 runs off 94 balls were crucial for England's innings.

Brief Scores: England: 465 (Ollie Pope: 106, Harry Brook: 99, Jasprit Bumrah: 5/83) vs India: 471 and 90/2 (KL Rahul: 47*, Sai Sudharsan: 30, Ben Stokes: 1/18).
