Mohammed Shami Urges Indian Bowlers to Learn from Bumrah After Test Defeat

India's Disappointing Start in World Test Championship

India faced a challenging five-wicket loss against England in the opening Test at Headingley, prompting senior fast bowler Mohammed Shami to deliver a strong message to his fellow bowlers. Despite Jasprit Bumrah's impressive five-wicket haul in the first innings, the rest of the bowling unit struggled to provide adequate support, allowing England to successfully chase down 371 runs, marking their second-highest fourth innings total in Test history.

This defeat marks a rocky beginning for India in the new World Test Championship cycle. Notably, the team managed to score five centuries across both innings, yet the ineffective bowling on a pitch favorable to fast bowlers allowed the hosts to seize control and take an early lead in the five-match series.

Bumrah's performance included figures of 5/83 in the first innings. However, in the second innings, openers Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley (65) took on Bumrah and the other pacers early on. Shami emphasized the need for the Indian bowlers to learn from Bumrah and execute their strategies effectively.

"Other Indian bowlers should engage with Bumrah and learn from his approach. They need to discuss strategies with him and provide him with support. If they back Bumrah, we can secure victories. Reflecting on the first match, I believe we need to improve our bowling performance,"

Shami, who was sidelined due to injury and unable to participate, observed as the Indian bowling attack struggled to put the English batsmen under pressure after Bumrah's stellar first innings. Mohammed Siraj failed to convert his efforts into wickets, while Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna were ineffective, and Ravindra Jadeja could not consistently challenge the batters.

"Although Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each in the second innings, by the time Shardul dismissed two English batsmen, the match was already beyond our reach. It's crucial to take wickets with the new ball. They must support Bumrah. England triumphed in the first Test because we conceded too many easy runs. We need to strengthen our bowling unit," he added.

Looking Ahead to the Next Test

Notably, Siraj was left out of the attack from overs 42 to 80 on Day 5, despite showing moments of menace, apart from Bumrah. Arshdeep Singh, who had excelled in county cricket, was also not included in the squad. With a week's break before the second Test, the Indian team will be looking to revise their tactics and make a strong comeback.
