Kerala on High Alert Following Suspected Nipah Virus Case

Suspected Nipah Virus Infection in Kerala
A 57-year-old man from Palakkad district, Kerala, passed away on July 12, raising concerns that he may have been infected with the Nipah virus. In response, the state government has intensified surveillance in the area and is working to identify individuals who had contact with him.
Health Minister Veena George stated that the deceased was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Palakkad. Preliminary tests conducted at the Manjeri Medical College indicated early signs of Nipah virus infection.
The government is currently awaiting confirmation from the National Institute of Virology in Pune. This incident marks the second reported death from the Nipah virus in Kerala in recent days, following the death of a resident from Malappuram due to the same infection, while another patient from Palakkad remains hospitalized.
In light of the new case, authorities are actively identifying individuals who may have come into contact with the suspected patient and have increased regional monitoring. A list of 46 individuals who were in contact with the patient has been compiled.
To trace contacts, officials are utilizing CCTV footage and mobile tower location data. The health team is also monitoring the area for fever symptoms to detect any potential signs in others.
Given the seriousness of the situation, officials have been instructed to enhance their response teams. Residents of Palakkad and Malappuram have been advised to avoid unnecessary visits to hospitals, especially under the current circumstances.
Authorities have recommended limiting visits to friends or relatives receiving treatment, allowing only one person to accompany the patient. According to an official statement, it is mandatory for healthcare workers and visitors, including patients and their companions, to wear masks at all times.
Meanwhile, the health minister has issued a Nipah alert to hospitals in six districts. Hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, and Thrissur have been directed to report any patients exhibiting symptoms of fever and Nipah encephalitis immediately.
