Nitish Kumar Reddy's Future in IPL: Potential Move from SRH Ahead of 2026 Auction
Possible Departure from Sunrisers Hyderabad
Nitish Kumar Reddy, the talented all-rounder from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), may be considering a release from his current team as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction approaches. This move could help him secure more lucrative offers from competing franchises. Initially acquired by SRH for a base price of ₹20 lakh during the IPL 2023 auction, Reddy's impressive performance in the 2024 season led to a significant retention by the franchise for ₹6 crore ahead of IPL 2025.
A Stellar Performance in 2024
In the 2024 IPL season, the 22-year-old showcased his skills by scoring 303 runs at an impressive strike rate of 142.92, while also taking three wickets in 13 matches. His outstanding form earned him a spot on the national team for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. During his Test debut in Australia, Reddy continued to shine, scoring 213 runs, including a remarkable century at the MCG, and taking five wickets throughout the series.
Challenges Faced in IPL 2025
Unfortunately, Reddy's performance dipped during the IPL 2025 season, where he managed only 182 runs at a lower strike rate of 118.95. Unlike the previous year, he bowled just five overs, claiming two wickets while slightly improving his economy to 9.40. Despite this downturn, his all-round capabilities and potential keep him in the spotlight.
Interest from Other Franchises
Should SRH decide to release Reddy before the 2026 auction, several franchises are likely to pursue him. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are among the teams showing interest. KKR, the reigning champions, may consider letting go of Venkatesh Iyer, who had a disappointing 2025 season with only 142 runs in 11 matches. Reddy could serve as an excellent replacement, adding depth to their batting lineup and offering bowling options.
On the other hand, CSK might look to rejuvenate their squad by parting ways with veteran Vijay Shankar, who has struggled in recent seasons, scoring just 118 runs in six matches this year at a strike rate of 129.67, with his only significant contribution being a half-century against Delhi Capitals.
SRH's Retention Options
Despite the speculation surrounding Reddy's potential exit, SRH retains the option to utilize the Right to Match (RTM) card to reacquire him if bidding becomes competitive. The decision on whether Reddy will remain with Hyderabad or explore opportunities for a higher salary will likely hinge on his performances in the ongoing red-ball series against England and other forthcoming matches.
Regardless of his recent form, Nitish Kumar Reddy continues to be one of the most promising young talents in Indian cricket, and all eyes will be on him as IPL 2026 approaches.
