THE FIRST celebration of the calendar year is Makar Sankranti, which takes place on 14th January. It is the first day that the sun has been in Makara (Capricorn). This historic occasion is revered all over India and is marked with various rituals. Makar Sankranti soon approaches. India is a place where all the holidays are observed across the country. Tamil Nadu  
Makar Sankranti, a four day celebration, is one of the largest in Tamil Nadu. The start of the harvest season is heralded by the natives blowing conch shells. Some villages also hold a bull taming celebration called Jallikattu.
 
Assam 
India celebrates Makar Sankranti to mark the end of the harvest season. There are activities including plate breaking games called tekeli-bhonga and buffalo fighting. Popular foods include rice cakes and laru, a sweet coconut-based delicacy.

Bihar and Jharkhand 
 Makar Sankranti is celebrated by the people of Bihar and Jharkhand, who prepare a wide variety of delicacies in their homes. Chokha, ghee, papad, pickle and achaar are the 'chaar yaar' often given with khichdi. Punjab 
 
The Makar Sankranti festival which is also known as Lohri in Punjab is well known among the farmers. To worship God and perform rituals, bonfires are lit throughout the state. Apart from dancing bhangra, locals relish delicious kheer as a traditional delicacy.

 
Gujarat
One of the most anticipated days in Gujarat is the Uttarayan festival. To commemorate the anniversary, kite competitions are held at various locations around the state. Gujarati families prepare a delicious mix of winter vegetables called undhiyu and chikkis.
