During the five-day Diwali festival, people participate in festive gatherings, fireworks, feasts and prayers. Apart from this, various rituals are followed along with Goddess Lakshmi, and several other deities are worshipped.

Diwali, derived from "deepavali", means "row of light." People also light traditional clay oil lamps outside their homes to symbolize the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

Choti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated a day before Diwali where people worship Lord Hanuman, Maa Kali, Lord Krishna and Yama to atone for past sins. However, this year Panchang indicates that this year Diwali and Choti Diwali fall on the same day i.e. 12 November.
