Women Lead the Charge in Berhampur's Unique Rath Yatra Tradition

Celebrating Tradition in Berhampur

Berhampur: Continuing a cherished tradition, women in Gosaninuagaon, Berhampur, pulled the chariot of Subhadra during the Rath Yatra festivities this Friday, just as they have in previous years.

In contrast, the chariots of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra were drawn by male devotees, in line with established customs.

Berhampur is recognized as the second location in Odisha, following Baripada, to embrace this gender-specific practice during the yatra.

The tradition of women pulling Subhadra's chariot in Baripada dates back to 1975.

According to organizers, this custom began in Gosaninuagaon temple in 2000.

Panchanan Choudhury, manager of the Jagannath Temple Development Committee in Gosaninuagaon, noted, "Every year, the enthusiasm among women to participate has been growing since the tradition started."

This year, the honor of being the first to pull Subhadra's chariot went to Sanghamitra Dalai, the Mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation.

MLA K. Anil Kumar led the procession for Lord Jagannath's chariot.

Numerous women were seen pulling Subhadra's chariot from the temple to Gundicha temple, which is approximately one-and-a-half kilometers away.

Choudhury explained, "The temple committee has designated the right to pull Subhadra's chariot exclusively for women to promote their active and respectful involvement in the Rath Yatra."

The mayor added, "This special reservation allows women to participate without having to compete with men for proximity to the chariot, reducing the risk of harassment from unscrupulous individuals during the event."

Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M confirmed that extensive security measures were implemented, including the presence of female police officers near Subhadra's chariot.
