Roshan Mathew Discusses His Transformative Role in Kankhajura

Exploring the Depths of Ashu in Kankhajura
In the captivating new series Kankhajura, Roshan Mathew takes on one of the most intricate roles of his career as Ashu. This character is marked by profound emotions and difficult decisions. Mathew shares his motivations for accepting the role, his experiences on set, and why he believes Kankhajura is a pivotal moment in his acting journey.
What Draws You to Kankhajura?
The character of Ashu was a significant factor in my decision to join the project. From the very first description I read, I felt that passing on this opportunity would mean missing out on a unique role that might not come around again.
Satisfaction with Malayalam Cinema
I truly appreciate the work being produced in Malayalam cinema. Many of us active in this industry feel fortunate to be part of a time when we can showcase our best talents, thanks to the remarkable writers and filmmakers. I am continually grateful for the opportunities I receive.
Limited Appearances in Hindi Films
I am drawn to Hindi projects that offer something different from what I find in Malayalam. If a Hindi film presents a unique opportunity, I am eager to participate. My experiences in Hindi cinema, including films like Choked and Darling, have been rewarding.
Diverse Roles in Hindi Cinema
I have enjoyed a variety of roles in Hindi films, each providing memorable experiences. While some projects have achieved commercial success and others have not, I cherish all of them for the learning and growth they have offered.
Differences Between OTT and Film
I don’t see a significant difference between filming for OTT platforms and traditional cinema. The essence of acting remains the same, although longer formats may allow for deeper character exploration. Regardless, the joy of performing is consistent across both mediums.
Reflecting on My Journey
I am pleased with my journey thus far, particularly the talented individuals I have collaborated with and the diverse roles I have been offered. Each project has contributed to my growth, teaching me to focus on what truly matters and how to handle varying outcomes.
Working with Mohit Suri in Kankhajura
Mohit Suri plays a crucial role in Kankhajura, serving as the emotional core for my character, Ashu. Our director, Chandan Arora, encouraged us to maintain a certain distance initially, reflecting the long separation between our characters. This approach allowed for a natural connection to develop during filming.
Natural Bonding on Set
The bond between Mohit and me developed organically. He is a wonderful person to work with, very accommodating, and quite different from his character in the series. His performances often left me in awe, making it a delightful experience.
Enjoying the Kankhajura Experience
Shooting Kankhajura has been one of my most enjoyable experiences. Despite the hectic schedule, the team and the beautiful location in Goa made it all worthwhile. Knowing I was working with talented individuals like cinematographer Rajeev Ravi and director Chandan Arora filled me with excitement from day one.
Exploring Dark Characters
I have a fascination for portraying darker characters. While I can empathize with Ashu, his extreme choices are a departure from my own experiences, making this role particularly thrilling for me.
Upcoming Projects
I have several Malayalam films lined up, starting with Ronth, directed by Shahi Kabir, set to release on June 13. I am excited about this project and another unique Malayalam film that I will begin shooting in June. My experiences in Hindi cinema have been fulfilling, and I choose projects that genuinely excite me.
