Legendary England fast bowler James Anderson has shared insights about his competitive encounters with Indian cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli throughout his impressive 21-year career. He noted that facing Kohli proved to be slightly more challenging than bowling to Tendulkar.
Having made his Test debut in 2003, Anderson concluded his illustrious career last season, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
The bowler achieved notable success against both Tendulkar and Kohli, dismissing them nine and seven times, respectively.
Reflecting on his early encounters with Kohli during the 2014 series in England, Anderson mentioned exploiting Kohli's weakness outside off stump. However, by their next meeting in 2018, Kohli had significantly improved, making him a much tougher opponent.
It's important to recognize that Tendulkar and Kohli faced Anderson at different points in their careers, with Anderson still actively playing county cricket at the age of 42.
Anderson remarked on Kohli's evolution as a player, stating that he had elevated his game to a level that posed challenges not just for him but for bowlers in general. He recalled getting Kohli out four or five times in their first series, but struggled to dismiss him in subsequent encounters.
In contrast, Anderson felt that his dominance over Tendulkar did not shift in the same way it did with Kohli. He described Kohli as a particularly tough competitor, noting his fierce mindset.
Anderson referred to Tendulkar as a 'God-like' figure, while he characterized Kohli as more confrontational and competitive.
He explained, 'Kohli wanted to engage in a battle. He was very competitive, and after my initial successes, it became increasingly difficult to bowl to him.'
Anderson contrasted Kohli's expressive demeanor with Tendulkar's calm and composed presence at the crease, highlighting how Kohli's emotional intensity was evident in his captaincy and celebrations.
