Hardik Pandya's Inspiring Comeback Ahead of IPL 2025
Hardik Pandya's Journey: From Criticism to Triumph
Over the past year, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from harsh criticism to overwhelming support. His unwavering resolve to 'never leave the battlefield' has been a key factor in navigating these challenges.
As he prepares for his second season as captain of the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Pandya can anticipate a much warmer welcome at Wankhede Stadium, following his significant contributions to India's T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy victories.
The backlash he encountered during the 2024 IPL stemmed from the franchise's choice to appoint him as captain, taking over from Rohit Sharma, who had led the team to five championship titles.
"For me, it has always been about never leaving the battlefield. There have been times in my career when my focus shifted from winning to simply surviving and holding my position," Pandya remarked.
"I understood that regardless of the circumstances, cricket would always be my strongest ally. I persevered, and when my efforts finally bore fruit, it exceeded my expectations. The six-month period during which we clinched the World Cup, coupled with the immense love and support I received upon my return, marked a complete transformation for me," he added.
At 31, Pandya expressed his steadfast belief that persistence would lead to strength. "I wasn't sure when that would occur, but as the saying goes, destiny had its own plan, and everything shifted for me in just two and a half months," he noted.
Pandya played a crucial role with the new ball alongside Mohammed Shami during India's recent Champions Trophy win, stepping up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah. He was also part of the squad that triumphed in the T20 World Cup held in the Americas last year.
The 2024 IPL season proved to be tough for him, with MI finishing at the bottom of the standings. However, Pandya remains optimistic about the team's prospects this year, citing a well-rounded squad.
"Having participated in the IPL for nearly 11 years, each season brings a fresh wave of energy and positivity. The 2024 season was undoubtedly tough for us, but it also offered valuable lessons," Pandya explained. "We took those insights into account while shaping our team for 2025. This time, we've gathered an experienced lineup—players who have extensive experience at the highest level. That alone is thrilling," he concluded.
