JNU Adopts 'Kulguru' as Gender-Neutral Term for University Head

JNU's Gender-Inclusive Language Change

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has made a significant decision to replace the term 'Kulpati' with 'Kulguru' as part of its commitment to gender inclusivity.

'Guru is the Appropriate Term for Academic Leadership'

According to JNU's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, 'Kulguru' is a gender-neutral term that accurately reflects the role of an academic leader. She noted, 'Guru is the correct term for an academic head, recognized across all Indian languages. The term 'Pati' carries various connotations, which is why 'Kulguru' is a more suitable choice.'

Proposal for a Gender-Neutral Title

The initiative to adopt 'Kulguru' was introduced by Prof. Pandit during an executive council meeting earlier this year. As reported, she emphasized that 'Kulguru' is a term that embodies gender neutrality and is rooted in the ancient Guru-shishya tradition.

Advocating for Gender Sensitivity in University Policies

Prof. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, the first female Vice-Chancellor of JNU, has consistently advocated for gender-sensitive reforms within the institution. Since assuming her role, she has promoted the use of gender-specific pronouns in official communications.
