Tragic Drowning Incident in Dwarka: Pilgrims Overwhelmed by River Currents

Drowning Incident in Gomti River
Devbhoomi Dwarka, June 6: A spiritual pilgrimage turned into a tragedy when seven pilgrims from Jamnagar, Gujarat, drowned while taking a holy dip in the Gomti river near Devbhoomi Dwarka.
Local residents and fire brigade personnel managed to rescue six of the pilgrims, but unfortunately, one young woman lost her life during the incident.
The group, consisting of four men and three women, had traveled to this sacred city for their pilgrimage.
As they entered the Gomti river, they were caught off guard by the strong currents that swept them away.
Eyewitnesses quickly alerted the authorities, leading to a swift response from both locals and emergency services.
Despite the rescue efforts, one woman could not be saved, while the other six were successfully retrieved and taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
This incident marks the third drowning case in the Gomti river within a month, raising significant concerns regarding safety protocols.
Just three days prior, an elderly man narrowly escaped drowning thanks to the timely intervention of security personnel.
Earlier, on May 21, another tragic event occurred when three pilgrims from Patan drowned, with only one being rescued.
Officials have acknowledged that strong sea currents are flowing into the Gomti river, making the waters increasingly perilous.
Despite warnings issued by the Indian Meteorological Department, many pilgrims, unaware of the dangers, continue to cross safety barriers to perform their rituals.
In light of these recent incidents and the increasing number of visitors to Dwarka, the Gujarat government has enhanced safety measures and infrastructure in the area.
Life jackets are now mandatory for all ferry passengers on routes like Okha–Beyt Dwarka and for boat rides on the Gomti river.
Operators have been instructed to prevent overcrowding and ensure that every passenger wears a life jacket, with strict penalties for non-compliance.
The Dwarka police are conducting regular inspections to enforce these regulations.
On an environmental note, following directives from the Gujarat High Court, the state has been urged to implement measures to reduce plastic pollution on Beyt Dwarka island and protect the delicate marine ecosystem.
These initiatives reflect a comprehensive strategy by the state government to ensure safety, promote development, and maintain sustainability in one of India's most revered pilgrimage sites.
