Incident Overview

Srinagar: On Monday, an explosion occurred during the demolition of an old mosque in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in injuries to three individuals.

According to officials, the blast took place while local residents were engaged in the mosque's reconstruction in the Langate Handwara area.

Witnesses reported a sudden loud explosion, which left three people injured at the scene. They were promptly transported to the sub-district hospital in Langate, with one individual later referred to the government medical college in Handwara for advanced care.

Authorities have filed a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the incident, and an investigation is currently underway.

It is important to note that regions like Langate have recently experienced significant mortar shelling from Pakistan, following targeted strikes by the Indian Armed Forces against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

In retaliation, Pakistan has conducted heavy shelling on civilian areas in Poonch, Rajouri, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora districts. Security forces have defused some unexploded shells before allowing civilians to return to their homes in these border regions.

Following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, the Armed Forces received directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to respond decisively. They executed strikes at nine locations, including Muridke near Lahore, Bahawalpur, and Kotli and Muzaffarabad in PoK.

The shelling from Pakistan has claimed the lives of eighteen individuals, with thirteen fatalities occurring in Poonch district alone. Numerous structures, including homes, shops, a mosque, a church, and a Gurudwara, have been destroyed due to the shelling in Poonch.
