India vs Pakistan: Asia Cup Clash Set to Proceed Amid Rising Tensions
Asia Cup Match Confirmed
New Delhi: As uncertainty looms over the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that it cannot withdraw from the tournament. The clash between these two rivals is set to proceed as planned following the BCCI's approval during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, according to sources.
The ACC officially announced the Asia Cup schedule on Saturday, revealing that the match between India and Pakistan is scheduled for September 14. Both teams have been placed in Group A, alongside the UAE and Oman.
"The BCCI is unable to withdraw from the tournament or the match at this point. This decision was reached during the ACC meeting. As India is the host nation, no changes can be made at this stage. An official discussion took place, leading to this conclusion. The match will proceed as scheduled," BCCI sources stated on Sunday.
Concerns regarding the India-Pakistan match have intensified after the India Champions team, captained by Yuvraj Singh, opted out of a scheduled game against the Pakistan Champions in Birmingham during the ongoing World Championship of Legends. This decision resulted in the cancellation of that match.
The players' choice was influenced by the escalating political tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
Despite the announcement of the Asia Cup schedule, the BCCI has not yet made any statements regarding a potential boycott of Pakistan in the tournament.
Ending months of speculation, ACC president and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi officially revealed the dates for the 17th edition of the Asia Cup on Saturday.
This tournament will adopt a T20 format, aligning with the preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup, and will feature eight teams for the first time in its history.
India and Pakistan are in Group A, while Group B consists of Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.
The top teams from each group will progress to the Super Four stage, followed by the final, which could lead to as many as three encounters between India and Pakistan during the tournament.
India currently holds the title of defending champions after defeating Sri Lanka in the final of the 2023 edition.
