Tribute to a Cultural Icon


Guwahati, July 27: Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, paid a touching homage to the legendary Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika during his visit to the musician's residence in Guwahati on Saturday. This house, now maintained as a living museum, showcases the life, artistry, and cultural influence of the renowned 'Bard of the Brahmaputra.'


Upon arrival, Sonowal was warmly greeted by Samar Hazarika, Dr. Hazarika’s younger sibling, along with other family members. They guided him through the residence, which features unique memorabilia, musical instruments, books, and photographs that highlight the maestro’s extensive career as a singer, poet, composer, and humanitarian.


In a statement to the media, Sonowal emphasized the enduring significance of Dr. Hazarika’s contributions. He stated, “Bhupen da’s works remain a source of hope and pride for the people of Assam. His music embodies the principles of unity, compassion, and cultural identity.”


He underscored the necessity of preserving Dr. Hazarika’s legacy for future generations, asserting, “It is crucial for our youth to connect with Bhupen da’s message. His art transcends mere cultural expression; it serves as a catalyst for social change.”


A press release indicated that the Assam government plans to celebrate Dr. Hazarika’s centenary with year-long festivities, featuring active involvement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


“The strength of Bhupen da’s music lies in its unifying power,” Sonowal noted. “Through his legacy, we can enhance Assamese identity and share its richness globally.”


The minister referred to the residence as a sacred site, symbolizing the lasting spirit of an artist who profoundly influenced the cultural essence of Assam.
