Mehbooba Mufti Urges for Diplomacy Over War in Wake of Pahalgam Attack

In the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the PDP, has called for a diplomatic approach rather than military action. She criticized the government's response and emphasized that war is not a solution for a nuclear power like India. Mufti highlighted the tragic loss of lives and the ongoing threat posed by terrorists, urging both nations to seek peaceful resolutions through political means. Her comments reflect a growing concern over the impact of conflict on civilians, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, and the need for greater awareness and understanding in international relations.

Call for Diplomatic Solutions

Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized that war should never be considered a viable option, especially for a nuclear power like India. Following the recent attack in Pahalgam, she expressed that the central government should have promptly sent a multilateral delegation to inform other nations about the situation in the country. In her remarks to a news agency, Mufti stated that the current efforts by the Indian government to send delegations abroad should have been initiated earlier to raise awareness about the incident and potential responses.

Reflecting on the tragic events in Pahalgam, where 27-28 lives were lost, Mufti lamented the destruction of homes and the impact on the local community. She pointed out that the terrorists involved in the attack remain at large, questioning what has been achieved in the aftermath. Mufti asserted that the conflict is not between civilians but rather between two nations, suggesting that political intervention and diplomacy could have provided a resolution.

The Need for Understanding

Mufti questioned the government's approach, stating, "There are many actions the government should take, as this is not our war. It is a conflict between two countries that could have been resolved through political means and diplomacy. Instead of using a scalpel, a sword was drawn. What has been gained from this?" She stressed the importance of both nations recognizing that war is not a solution, as it only leads to destruction and adversely affects the lives of people in border areas.

She expressed hope that both countries would come to understand that war does not provide answers, only devastation, and that it often boosts media ratings at the expense of those living in conflict zones, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir. Previously, Mufti welcomed the Indian government's decision to send a cross-party delegation to major global capitals to inform them about the rising tensions between India and Pakistan.
