Shubman Gill Makes History as India's Test Captain Against England
Historic Achievement by Shubman Gill
On the first day of the second Test match at Edgbaston, Shubman Gill, who has taken on the role of India's Test captain, made a remarkable mark in cricket history. He has now joined the elite company of legends like Don Bradman and Gary Sobers by becoming the first batsman to score centuries in the initial two Tests of a series against England as captain. This achievement places him alongside the likes of Bradman, Sobers, and Graeme Smith.
Gill has become the ninth captain to score centuries in the first two Tests of a series during a tour of England. He is only the second Indian captain to accomplish this feat after Mohammad Azharuddin. Notably, Don Bradman achieved this in 1938, Gary Sobers in 1966, and Azharuddin in 1990. The 25-year-old Gill had previously scored 147 runs in the first Test at Headingley and continued his impressive form by remaining unbeaten on 114 runs on the first day of the Edgbaston Test, helping India reach 310 runs for the loss of five wickets by the end of the day's play.
Throughout his innings, Shubman Gill set several records. He became the fourth Indian to score centuries in both initial Tests under his captaincy, joining the ranks of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli.
Additionally, he is now the third Indian batsman to score centuries in three consecutive Tests against England, following in the footsteps of Mohammad Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Rahul Dravid.
