How a Wi-Fi Connection Sparked a Dramatic Breakup in China

A Romantic Getaway Turns Sour
Can a smartphone connect to a hotel’s Wi-Fi without needing a password? In theory, yes—if the network is open or if the device has previously connected using the same credentials. However, for one couple in China, this seemingly trivial detail led to a significant relationship fallout.
The couple was enjoying a romantic trip to Chongqing when an unexpected incident occurred during their hotel check-in. The woman, identified as Li, misplaced her identity card and opted to download a digital version. At that moment, her phone automatically connected to the hotel’s Wi-Fi, which she claimed happened without her intervention, raising her boyfriend's suspicions.
Upon realizing that Li’s phone had linked to the hotel’s Wi-Fi without her input, both were baffled, especially since Li had never stayed at that hotel before.
Her boyfriend confronted her immediately, but Li struggled to clarify the technical aspects of the situation. The argument escalated quickly, and convinced of her dishonesty, he decided to leave her right then and there. Li later recounted the incident to her friends, who were equally astonished. Determined to clear her name, she set out to uncover the truth.
Eventually, the explanation emerged: a different hotel in Chongqing, where Li had previously worked, had utilized the same Wi-Fi credentials. Her phone had saved the login information, causing it to connect automatically at the new venue.
Sadly, the damage was irreversible, as her boyfriend had already walked away.
