Jofra Archer Poised for Comeback in Second Test Against India

Jofra Archer's Recovery Progress
Jofra Archer, the English fast bowler, is on the verge of returning for the second Test against India, scheduled to commence on July 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Reports indicate that Archer, who has been recovering from a thumb injury incurred during the 2025 IPL while playing for Rajasthan Royals, is making significant strides in his rehabilitation. This injury had previously sidelined him from the first Test against India and a match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge.
Selector's Optimism for Archer's Return
Luke Wright, England's national selector, has provided encouraging news for fans, suggesting that Archer could soon be back on the field. He stated,
“Joff’s trucking on really well, actually. The plans for him, he’s playing a few second-team games. The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test.”
This approach is crucial for evaluating Archer's match readiness after an extended absence. If everything proceeds as planned, he may be included in the playing XI for the second Test against India. Wright further added,
“So, he’ll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test.”
The selectors are cautiously optimistic, highlighting the necessity of consistent progress without any setbacks.
Archer's Journey Back and England's Aspirations
Archer's injury also led to his absence from England's recent ODI series against the West Indies, which took place from May 29 to June 3. His last appearance in Test cricket was during the 2021 tour of India. As Wright pointed out,
“Like anything with all these bowlers, he’s got to keep ticking things off every day with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he’s available potentially for selection for that second Test.”
As England prepares to embark on a new World Test Championship cycle, they aim to start strong against India, with the first Test kicking off at Headingley on June 20. After missing the finals in both the 2019–21 and 2023–25 WTC seasons, the team is hopeful that Archer's return will bolster their bowling lineup. His comeback could be pivotal in their efforts to challenge India on home turf and regain their footing in the Test format.
