Shami's Comeback to Competitive Cricket

New Delhi [India] - Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who was left out of India's squad for the tour of England, has been included in Bengal's extended list of 50 potential players for the upcoming domestic cricket season, as reported by a sports news outlet.

Shami may feature for the East Zone in the Duleep Trophy, which is set to commence on August 28, marking his return to competitive play. The 34-year-old has an impressive record with 64 Tests, 108 ODIs, and 25 T20Is, but he hasn't played for India since the Champions Trophy concluded in March.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Shami led the pace attack during India's victorious Champions Trophy campaign, where they triumphed over New Zealand in the final. He took nine wickets across five matches, tying for the highest wicket-taker for India alongside spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who achieved the same in three games.

Despite his wicket-taking ability, Shami struggled with his economy, allowing runs at a rate of 5.68, making him one of the costliest bowlers in the tournament. After the Champions Trophy, he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 18th season of the Indian Premier League.

However, the Sunrisers, who were last year's finalists, had a disappointing season, finishing sixth in the group stage. Shami's performance mirrored that of his team, as he managed only six wickets in nine innings, with an economy of 11.23.

Following this challenging period, Shami was omitted from India's squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Shami was ruled out due to fitness concerns, stating, 'The medical team informed us that he has been sidelined for this series. He has been trying to regain fitness but faced a setback recently and underwent MRIs. It would be challenging to wait for his recovery, which is unfortunate as we value his skills.'

Before his anticipated return to the national team, Shami had been sidelined for over a year due to an ankle injury. He successfully underwent surgery in February 2024 but has since experienced knee pain, for which he is currently receiving treatment.
