Assam's Special Revision of Electoral Rolls: Key Findings and Procedures
Overview of the Special Revision Process
Guwahati, Dec 5: The ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls in Assam has seen a survey of 29,68,961 households to date.
According to the latest updates, 1,67,925 electors have been confirmed deceased, while 1,29,676 have been identified as having moved. Additionally, 2,63,837 individuals aged 18 and above have been found unregistered, and 65,973 potential electors have been recognized. To ensure the integrity of this process, an appeal mechanism is established. Decisions made by the Electoral Registration Officer can be contested with the District Magistrate, and further appeals can be directed to the Chief Electoral Officer, as per a press release from the Chief Electoral Officer's office in Assam.
The revision process emphasizes thorough field-level scrutiny, which commenced with house-to-house verification on November 22. A total of 29,656 booth-level officers (BLOs) have been assigned to each polling station, conducting physical verifications using pre-filled Statements 1, 2, and 3. BLOs are required to visit a residence at least three times if it is found locked or inaccessible. They will also assist in the submission of Forms 6, 7, and 8 following the verification.
In addition, 61,533 booth-level agents (BLAs) from various political parties are involved to promote transparency in the process.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has highlighted the importance of credibility in the SR process. The inclusion of BLAs from all political factions ensures grassroots participation and transparency, while the multiple visits by BLOs enhance the accuracy of the verification process.
