Bridging the Gap Between Science and Society

Bhubaneswar: On Thursday, Union Minister Jitendra Singh emphasized the importance of making scientific knowledge more accessible to the public, urging that science should extend beyond laboratory confines.

Speaking to a gathering of scientists and scholars at the Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT), Singh remarked, “Numerous advancements from the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) are not even recognized by key stakeholders.”

He highlighted successful homegrown technologies, such as Terafil water filters and innovations in metal crafting, advocating for stronger connections between industry and youth outreach.

The Union Minister for Science and Technology stated, “It is essential to bring science into the public's awareness.”

Singh also pointed out the crucial role of India's mining and minerals sector in realizing the goal of a self-sufficient and technologically advanced nation.

He noted that IMMT is strategically positioned, both in location and expertise, to spearhead innovation in critical minerals and sustainable material development.

Referencing India's extensive 11,000-km coastline and the deep ocean mission, he mentioned that Odisha is well-placed to engage in marine research, alternative energy, and material innovation.

Singh reiterated the necessity for collaboration among ministries, scientific institutions, and industry partners, mentioning that the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) will serve as a central coordination hub.

He encouraged the integration of India's ancient engineering principles with contemporary research, citing the cyclone-resistant design of the Konark Sun Temple as an example.

The minister urged the scientific community to adopt a forward-thinking approach, revising goals every four years to keep pace with rapid technological advancements.

“Let’s strategize for 2047 with a vision for 2027. The speed of innovation necessitates it,” Singh asserted.

During his visit, the minister inaugurated several facilities, including a vertical shaft pilot plant and a sustainable recycling center.

He also laid the groundwork for a marine bio-manufacturing unit to be established by IMMT in partnership with the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS).
