Union Cabinet Greenlights Pune Metro Expansion

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet sanctioned the second phase of the Pune Metro initiative. This phase will see the construction of two elevated corridors: Corridor 2A from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Corridor 2B from Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi.

These new corridors will extend the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi route, aimed at enhancing traffic management between the eastern and western sections of Pune. Spanning approximately 12.75 kilometers, the route will feature 13 stations, linking areas such as Chandni Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.

The project is estimated to cost around Rs 3,626.24 crore and is expected to be completed within four years, with funding from the central government, state authorities, and international financial institutions.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has commenced preliminary activities, including surveys and design work. The Vanaz–Chandni Chowk corridor will measure 1.12 kilometers and include two stations, while the Ramwadi–Wagholi corridor will stretch 11.63 kilometers with 11 stations.

These new routes will connect vital residential, IT, and commercial zones in Pune, alleviating traffic congestion on Paud Road and Ahmednagar Road.

Additionally, the new metro lines will link Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court) at the District Court interchange, facilitating a more integrated transport system.

Chandni Chowk and Wagholi will also be linked to long-distance bus services to major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and Ahilyanagar.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, highlighting the importance of connecting key areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar noted that this decision will enhance public transport, reduce traffic, and contribute to the city's overall development.

Currently, Maha-Metro is advancing work on the PCMC–Swargate and Vanaj–Ramwadi routes under Phase 1, along with the elevated extension from PCMC to Nigdi and the underground line from Swargate to Katraj.
