Matheus Cunha Reflects on His Journey to Manchester United
Cunha's Emotional Move to Manchester United
As the Premier League 2025-26 season approaches, Matheus Cunha, the latest addition to Manchester United, has shared insights about his path to Old Trafford, childhood memories associated with the club, and the legends who shaped his playing style.
Cunha expressed that joining Manchester United represents not only a significant career milestone but also a deeply personal achievement.
“Finding the right words to express this moment is challenging. It feels like a dream realized. Sometimes, I can hardly believe I am actually here. This club has always held a special place in my heart,” the Brazilian forward stated during an interview on JioHotstar.
Reflecting on his early life in Brazil, Cunha shared a touching story that highlights his long-standing bond with the team.
“There’s a humorous memory — back in Brazil, we could only catch Premier League matches at my grandma’s house since neither my home nor my cousins had the channel. Every weekend, we would gather there to watch games. My older cousin was a Manchester United fan and introduced me to the Premier League and United. Even when we played on the gravel fields back home, which is quite common in Brazil, I would envision myself playing for United. Being here now and reminiscing about those times is incredibly emotional,” Cunha recalled, having transitioned to United from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Known for his versatility and intensity on the field, Cunha also mentioned the Manchester United legends who inspired him during his formative years. The 25-year-old revealed that former captain Wayne Rooney had the most significant influence on him.
“Rooney was my idol. I’ve tried to incorporate aspects of his game into my own — his relentless effort, his willingness to fight for the ball, and his skill and impact in attack. He wore the number 10 jersey and led by example,” he remarked.
He acknowledged that other United legends also played a role in his passion for football, saying, “Certainly, there were others — Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs, Van der Sar. That entire squad left a lasting impression on me during my teenage years.”
As a new chapter begins at Manchester, Cunha aims to follow in the footsteps of the heroes who inspired his journey. With the upcoming season on the horizon, fans are eager to see if the Brazilian can make his own mark at the Theatre of Dreams.
