Early Onset of Southwest Monsoon Expected in India

The Indian subcontinent is anticipated to experience an early arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the monsoon is likely to commence over Kerala ahead of its usual schedule. Today, the Southwest Monsoon has progressed into certain regions of the southeast Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin area, and additional parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands, and Andaman Sea. Furthermore, conditions appear favorable for the monsoon's further advancement into more areas of the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives, the Comorin region, the South Bay of Bengal, the remaining sections of the Andaman Islands and Andaman Sea, as well as parts of the central Bay of Bengal over the next three to four days.
IMD Predicts Arrival In Kerala On May 27
In its latest update, the IMD has projected that the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Kerala on May 27, with a model error margin of four days on either side.
India is currently experiencing varied weather conditions, with southern states receiving rainfall while northern regions are enduring heatwaves. The IMD continues to provide daily weather updates and specific alerts based on current observations. Northern and central India are facing extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 44°C, while rain alerts are active across coastal and interior areas. Cities such as Noida, Patna, and Lucknow are particularly affected by the relentless heatwave. Conversely, southern and northeastern states are beginning to feel the initial impacts of the southwest monsoon, which is bringing thunderstorms, strong winds, and scattered rainfall.
IMD Forecast
The IMD forecasts that rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is expected over South Peninsular and adjacent Central India for the next four days.
Northeast India is preparing for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning predicted over the next five days (May 16-20).
In stark contrast, North India continues to endure extreme heat, with heatwave conditions anticipated from May 16 to 18 in Uttar Pradesh and from May 16 to 17 in West Rajasthan.
