Why Updating Aadhaar Biometrics for Children is Crucial After Age Seven

In India, children who registered for Aadhaar before age five must update their biometrics by age seven to avoid deactivation of their unique ID. The UIDAI is sending notifications to parents about this Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU). Failure to comply may hinder access to essential services like school admissions and scholarships. The update is free if done between ages five and seven, but incurs a fee after that. This article explores the importance of timely updates for children's Aadhaar and the implications of not doing so.

Mandatory Biometric Update for Aadhaar Holders Under Seven

New Delhi: Children who registered for Aadhaar before turning five are required to update their biometric information once they reach the age of seven. Failure to do so may result in the deactivation of their unique identification number, as stated by officials.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has begun notifying parents via SMS on the mobile numbers linked to their children's Aadhaar accounts, urging them to complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU).

According to the statement, "Completing the MBU on time is vital for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of children's biometric data. If the MBU is not performed after the child turns seven, the Aadhaar number may be deactivated in accordance with current regulations."

An official from UIDAI mentioned that without updating their biometrics, children might encounter difficulties accessing various Aadhaar-linked services.

When a child under five enrolls for Aadhaar, they provide their photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address, and proof of identity. However, fingerprints and iris scans are not collected until they reach five years of age.

As per the existing guidelines, it is mandatory to update the fingerprints, iris, and photo in the Aadhaar record when the child turns five. This process is referred to as the first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU).

If the MBU is completed between the ages of five and seven, it is free of charge. However, after the child turns seven, a nominal fee of Rs 100 is applicable for the update.

Having an Aadhaar with updated biometrics simplifies access to essential services, including school admissions, entrance exam registrations, and benefits from scholarship and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.
