Why Are 23 Elephants Causing Concern in Keonjhar? The Story Behind Their Stay

Elephant Herd Sparks Alarm in Keonjhar
In the Ukhunda forest beat of the Champua range within the Keonjhar forest division, a group of 23 elephants has taken up residence for the last two days, creating unease among local villagers. This herd has lingered in the area following the birth of a calf on Tuesday.
Residents, anxious about the possibility of the elephants wandering into their homes, have been spending restless nights equipped with torches, sticks, and lathis for protection. Dhanraj HD, the Divisional Forest Officer for the Keonjhar forest division, reassured the public, stating, “The herd is staying close to safeguard the newborn calf and is not moving away. There is no need for alarm. We have increased forest personnel to keep a close watch on the situation.” With the arrival of the new calf, the total elephant population in the Keonjhar forest division has now reached 147.
Data from the Forest Department reveals that this population comprises 45 calves, 32 tuskers, and 70 female elephants distributed across various forest ranges. However, reports from forest officials and local sources indicate that the herd has been causing damage to crops and properties in the vicinity. There have been instances where the elephants have attacked residents, resulting in injuries and even fatalities.
