PM Modi was welcomed by Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and representatives from Canada's First Nations upon his arrival.
The summit is taking place in the scenic resort town of Kananaskis, where security is tight, and PM Modi is expected to participate in discussions starting Tuesday.
His visit follows a successful trip to Cyprus, where he engaged in extensive talks with President Nikos Christodoulides regarding India-Cyprus relations.
Before departing India, PM Modi expressed on X that the G7 summit would provide an excellent opportunity to share views on various global challenges and discuss the Global South's priorities.
During the summit, he will interact with leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, along with host Mark Carney, who is also the G7 President.
Notably, PM Modi will not meet with US President Donald Trump, who is shortening his summit attendance to address the Iran-Israel crisis.
Other notable attendees include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, South Korean Prime Minister Lee Jae-Myung, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
This summit presents PM Modi with a chance for direct discussions with influential leaders from developed nations, especially following the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack and Operation Sindoor aimed at terrorist groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
Additionally, this visit is crucial for India-Canada relations, which are currently being re-evaluated by Prime Minister Carney after previous tensions under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who faced criticism for his ties to Khalistan supporters.
