WPL 2026 Auction Insights
The WPL 2026 auction took place in New Delhi on November 29, filling 67 slots, including 23 for international players across five franchises. Deepti Sharma, an all-rounder from India, became the most expensive player, sold for Rs 3.20 crore to UP Warriorz, who utilized their Right to Match (RTM) option.
Upcoming WPL 2026 Schedule
This year's WPL will feature a unique schedule, with the final set for a weekday on Thursday, February 5, diverging from the traditional weekend format. The tournament kicks off on January 9 and includes two double-header matches on Saturdays, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
The league will span 28 days and take place at two venues: Navi Mumbai, where the Indian women's team recently won the ODI World Cup against South Africa, and Vadodara. The first 11 matches, including both double-headers, will occur at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, while the remaining fixtures, including the eliminator on February 3 and the final, will be hosted at Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
WPL's Evolution and Format
This edition of the WPL is notable as it is the first to be held in January-February, unlike the previous three seasons that took place in February-March, just before the Indian Premier League (IPL). Additionally, this season will not coincide with major international matches. The Mumbai Indians (MI), the reigning champions, have won two titles in the first three seasons, while the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are the only other team to have claimed the trophy. The Delhi Capitals (DC) have been runners-up in all three seasons, while the Gujarat Giants (GG) and UP Warriorz (UPW) are still seeking their first final appearance.
