India and Russia Strengthen Ties Ahead of Upcoming Summit
Strengthening India-Russia Relations
On Thursday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman engaged in discussions with a delegation led by Denis Manturov, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. The talks focused on various topics of mutual interest, including investment, banking, and finance. The Finance Ministry shared on social media that both nations are optimistic about achieving significant outcomes at the upcoming 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit scheduled for December 5, 2025.
Support for BRICS Presidency
The ministry also noted that Manturov expressed strong support for India's upcoming presidency of the BRICS group. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday evening for a two-day visit, during which he will participate in the summit alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Strengthening Long-Standing Partnership
Putin's visit aims to further solidify the nearly eight-decade-long partnership between India and Russia, which has remained stable despite complex geopolitical challenges. Prime Minister Modi welcomed President Putin at the airport and is set to host a private dinner for him this evening to foster a conducive atmosphere for the summit discussions.
Key Discussion Points
The upcoming talks between the two leaders will primarily focus on enhancing defense relations, safeguarding India-Russia trade from external pressures, and exploring collaboration in small modular plants. This meeting is particularly significant given the backdrop of deteriorating India-U.S. relations, and it is expected that several agreements will be reached, including in trade sectors.
