Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat and a prominent BJP figure, tragically lost his life in the Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. His cremation is scheduled for today in Rajkot, where he will be honored with full state honors. In preparation for his last rites, tribute hoardings have been erected in Ahmedabad, commemorating the victims of the crash, including Rupani. The Tricolor flag has been brought to the Civil Hospital mortuary to drape his remains, and approximately 2,000 kilograms of flowers will adorn the hearse transporting his body.
Details of the Last Rites
Reports indicate that Rupani's family will receive his remains from the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad at 11:30 AM on Monday. The body will then be flown to Rajkot, expected to arrive by 2 PM. The final rites are set to take place at 5 PM, accompanied by state honors.
Funeral Procession Information
The Chairman of the Ramnathpara crematorium in Rajkot stated that the funeral procession will commence at 5 PM from Rupani's residence. He mentioned, 'The agni sanskar of Vijay Rupani will be conducted here... The agni sanskar will take place around 6 PM, with the procession starting at 5 PM from his home.'
Tragic Incident Details
Rupani was one of the 241 casualties in the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff, colliding with a doctor's hostel complex near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. His identity was confirmed through DNA testing on Sunday.
State Mourning Announced
In light of this tragedy, the Gujarat government has declared a one-day state mourning for Rupani. An official order issued on Sunday mandates that the national flag be flown at half-mast on all government buildings, and no official entertainment will be held during this period of mourning.
