Commencement of Tunnel Trials

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to initiate trials for two new tunnels that will connect the Dwarka Expressway with the Indira Gandhi International Airport and National Highway 48 on Thursday, May 29. This development aims to alleviate traffic issues and enhance the travel experience for commuters.

According to a senior official from NHAI, the traffic trials will commence on both tunnels. Initially, commuters will be permitted to use the route from 12 PM to 3 PM, with plans to gradually extend this time frame.

The trial period, scheduled between 12 PM and 3 PM, is designed to ease congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and provide a faster route for those traveling between Gurugram, Dwarka, and the airport.

In a traffic advisory, the Gurugram traffic police announced, "New Tunnel to Airport Now Open via Dwarka Expressway… Skip the traffic and save time! If you’re coming from Jaipur, Sohna, or Southern Peripheral Road, use the new tunnel via Dwarka expressway for a faster, smoother ride to the airport."

The new infrastructure includes a 5.1-kilometer tunnel, featuring a 3.6-kilometer eight-lane section connecting the expressway to the airport, along with a two-lane 1.5-kilometer tunnel leading to NH-48. This project is part of Package 4 of the Dwarka Expressway, which spans 29 kilometers and is valued at Rs 9,000 crore, starting from Mahipalpur in Delhi and concluding at Kherki Daula in Gurugram. The total route comprises 18.9 kilometers in Haryana and 10.1 kilometers in New Delhi.
