Smith's Recovery Progress

Andrew McDonald, the head coach of the Australian cricket team, is optimistic about Steve Smith's return for the second Test against the West Indies. Smith, renowned for his outstanding batting abilities, was sidelined during the first Test due to a finger injury he incurred in the World Test Championship final.

Anticipation for Grenada Test

The seasoned Australian batsman had to miss the initial match against the West Indies because of his injury. Since then, he has been diligently working on his rehabilitation, even traveling to New York to practice hitting tennis balls in the nets before rejoining the squad in Birmingham last Saturday evening.

As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Smith must still pass a few medical evaluations to receive clearance to participate in the Grenada Test, which is set to commence on July 3. Nevertheless, McDonald is confident that the finger injury will not lead to any long-term issues.

McDonald's Confidence in Smith's Return

McDonald stated, "The focus is on how functional the finger is, rather than any permanent damage. There’s no risk to the long-term health of the finger. He’ll be back, and I believe it’s likely he’ll play. He has a crucial training session two days prior to the match."

Smith's Expected Batting Position

McDonald also indicated that Smith is likely to reclaim his preferred number four batting position. This would mean that Josh Inglis, who has been serving as a keeper-batter, may need to step aside for the returning star.

"He’ll train the day before the match as well, and if everything goes well, I expect him to return to the number four spot," McDonald added.

Impact of Smith's Return on Team Dynamics

Australia faced challenges with their batting lineup in the first innings of the opening Test in Barbados without Smith. Although Travis Head showcased his talent with consecutive half-centuries, other significant players like Sam Konstas, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis struggled to make a notable impact throughout both innings.

Smith's comeback is anticipated to provide much-needed stability and experience to an Australian batting order that is currently under pressure as they aim to secure a series victory in Grenada.
