Statewide Shutdown in Manipur Commemorates Ethnic Violence

Imphal/Churachandpur: A shutdown initiated by various groups on Saturday disrupted daily life across both the Maitei-dominated Imphal Valley and the Kuki-inhabited hill regions, marking the second anniversary of the ethnic conflict in Manipur.

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), representing the Meitei community, organized the shutdown in the valley, while the Zomi Students Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) enforced it in the hill areas.

This date in 2023 marked the onset of violent clashes between the Meiteis and Kukis, resulting in over 260 fatalities, around 1,500 injuries, and displacing more than 70,000 individuals, as reported by officials.

Shops were closed, public transport was halted, and private businesses remained shuttered throughout the state, although a few private vehicles were spotted on the roads in the morning.

Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, were also closed.

To maintain order, security personnel were deployed at strategic locations to deter any potential unrest, according to officials.

COCOMI is set to host a 'Manipur Peoples' Convention' at Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal, encouraging large public attendance.

In the evening, a candlelight vigil will take place in Imphal to honor the victims of the violence.

Meanwhile, the Kuki community in the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi is observing a 'Day of Separation,' advocating for a distinct territory.

A memorial event is planned at the 'Wall of Remembrance' in Churachandpur town at 11 am, commemorating those lost in the ethnic conflict, followed by another gathering at the Sehken Burial site at 2 pm, where some of the deceased Kuki individuals have been laid to rest.
