Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), one of the largest transport hubs in Delhi, is set to close one of its four runways for essential upgrades starting this Sunday. Travelers should prepare for potential travel disruptions, as this runway will be out of service for three months, impacting nearly 200 flights daily due to cancellations and rescheduling.

Measures to Minimize Disruptions

The airport's operator, DIAL, has indicated that it has implemented various measures to reduce disruptions. DIAL engaged in extensive discussions with airlines and aviation authorities to adjust flight schedules, aiming to alleviate any inconveniences. The operator is keen to avoid a repeat of the chaotic situation experienced in April, which involved runway closures and weather-related delays that drew significant public criticism.

Details on Runway 10/28 Upgrade

Runway 10/28 will remain closed until September 15 for critical technical enhancements. The upgrades will enhance the runway to CAT 3B standards, equipping it with advanced Instrument Landing System capabilities. This improvement will ensure that flights can land safely even when visibility is significantly reduced. Currently, the runway has this capability from one end, but the upgrade will extend it to both directions.

Impact on Flights During the Upgrade

According to DIAL's CEO, Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, airlines are expected to cancel approximately 114 flights daily, with an additional 86 flights being rescheduled. This results in an 8% cancellation rate, which is notably higher than the usual daily average of 3-3.5%. However, this was deemed a necessary step given the timing of the runway upgrade.
