In a stunning display, India secured a 2-1 advantage in the U19 Youth ODI series against England, propelled by an explosive performance from Vaibhav Suryavanshi. His remarkable innings of 86 runs off just 31 balls was pivotal in India's exhilarating four-wicket win, successfully chasing a revised target of 269 runs in only 35 overs during a rain-affected match.
Suryavanshi opened the batting with aggressive intent, unleashing a barrage against the English bowlers, including nine sixes, setting a new record for the most sixes by an Indian in U19 ODI history, surpassing Mandeep Singh's previous record of eight. Along with his sixes, he struck six fours, propelling India to 100 runs in just eight overs. By the time he was dismissed by Alexander Wade, India had already amassed 111 runs in a breathtaking start.
This innings was particularly satisfying for Suryavanshi, who had narrowly missed half-centuries in the previous two matches. He showcased his prowess against Sebastian Morgan, hitting two sixes in the third over and following up with another two sixes and a four in the next. James Minto also faced the brunt of Suryavanshi's onslaught, conceding 23 runs in a single over as the young batsman wreaked havoc on England's bowling attack.
However, his dismissal triggered a brief collapse, with India's score slipping to 199/6 by the 24th over. Just when the situation appeared dire, Kanishk Chouhan stepped up, contributing a vital unbeaten 43 runs under pressure. His partnership with RS Ambrish, which yielded 75 runs, was crucial in steering India to victory with 33 balls remaining.
Earlier, England had set a competitive total of 268/6 after a sluggish start due to a damp outfield. Captain Thomas Rew played a key role, scoring an impressive 76 not out from 44 balls, while opener Ben Dawkins provided a solid foundation with 62 runs, forming a 78-run opening partnership with Isaac Mohammed (41). Ben Mayes also added a valuable 31 runs, helping England establish a challenging score.
Despite England's efforts, it was Suryavanshi's record-setting performance and Chouhan's composed finish that ultimately highlighted India's potential in youth cricket. Suryavanshi, who gained recognition during his time with the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, has now firmly established his presence on the international youth stage.
