Concerns Over Delayed Fighter Jet Deliveries

Due to delays in engine supply from the American firm GE, the delivery of the indigenous Tejas MK1 light combat aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has faced significant setbacks. The Chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, expressed concerns, stating that not a single defense project has been completed on time as promised to the armed forces. Speaking at a conference, he emphasized the need for the industry to adhere to deadlines or refrain from making commitments that cannot be fulfilled. In February 2021, a deal worth ₹48,000 crore was signed between the Air Force and HAL for 83 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets, but none have been delivered yet, with initial deliveries expected to start in March 2024.

The Importance of Timelines in Defense Projects

Air Chief Marshal Singh highlighted that timelines are a critical issue, noting that since the establishment of deadlines, not a single project has been completed on schedule. He questioned the rationale behind making promises that cannot be kept, pointing out that sometimes there is doubt about the feasibility of a contract at the time of signing. He remarked that the nature of warfare is evolving with the introduction of new technologies. "Operation Sindoor has clearly indicated the direction we are heading and what we need for the future. Therefore, we must work diligently to reorganize our thought processes, which is already underway," he stated.

Support for Indigenous Fighter Jet Development

In praising the approval for the indigenous fifth-generation fighter jet program, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh noted, "The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) has also received approval for private industry participation, which is a significant step. The country now has similar confidence in private industry, and I am sure this will pave the way for major advancements in the future."
