Congress Expels Laxman Singh for Six Years

New Delhi: The Congress party has expelled Laxman Singh, a former MLA from Madhya Pradesh and brother of ex-chief minister Digvijaya Singh, from its primary membership for a duration of six years due to his 'anti-party activities'.

This decision follows Singh's repeated derogatory comments aimed at party leader Rahul Gandhi.

Previously, the Congress had issued a show-cause notice to Singh, questioning his remarks and the need for disciplinary action.

Tariq Anwar, the member secretary of the Congress Disciplinary Action Committee, confirmed the expulsion, stating it was effective immediately due to Singh's actions against the party.

However, the statement did not specify the exact nature of the 'anti-party activities' that led to this decision.

The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee had recommended action against Singh, which was subsequently reviewed by the All India Congress Committee's Disciplinary Action Committee.

Laxman Singh has a long political history, having served as a five-time MP and three-time MLA, first entering the state assembly in 1990 and winning his first MP seat in 1994 from Rajgarh.

He briefly joined the BJP in 2004 but returned to Congress in 2013.

Last month, the party issued a notice to Singh, citing his derogatory remarks about senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, as having 'crossed all acceptable limits'.

His comments were deemed damaging to the party's reputation.

On April 25, Singh criticized the party leadership following a terror attack in Pahalgam, stating, 'Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra are naive. The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity.'

The notice issued on May 9 highlighted complaints from MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari and AICC general secretary Harish Chaudhary regarding Singh's public statements that harmed the party's image.

Singh's remarks included accusations against Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, suggesting he might be 'in cahoots with terrorists'.

He also criticized Vadra's comments regarding the terror attack, labeling them as irresponsible and a threat to national security, urging the Congress to reconsider its public statements to avoid electoral backlash.
