Yashasvi Jaiswal Reflects on Near Century as India Dominates Day One at Edgbaston

Jaiswal's Near Miss and Gill's Stellar Performance

Birmingham [UK], July 3: Yashasvi Jaiswal expressed his disappointment after narrowly missing a century but praised Test captain Shubman Gill for his remarkable innings that placed India in a strong position at the conclusion of the first day of the second Test at Edgbaston.

Gill's impressive score of 114 not out, alongside Jaiswal's determined 87, became the highlight as India managed to avert another batting collapse on the typically friendly Birmingham pitch. Following a quick dismissal of KL Rahul for just 2 runs, Jaiswal emerged as a key player, skillfully balancing caution with aggression.

He skillfully navigated deliveries in the uncertain corridor while capitalizing on those that fell within his striking range. Despite England's disciplined bowling, which restricted the Indian batsmen, Jaiswal found ways to score, building a solid 66-run partnership with Gill.

Despite his efforts, Jaiswal fell agonizingly short of his second consecutive Test century in England, dismissed for 87 when he edged a delivery from England captain Ben Stokes to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

“Naturally, I feel disappointed. It’s tough, but it’s part of the game. I need to keep learning and enjoying cricket because, ultimately, it’s a wonderful sport,” Jaiswal shared with reporters after the day's play.

Following Jaiswal's unexpected dismissal, Gill continued his impressive form, forming an unbeaten 99-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja after the quick loss of Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

Gill's record-breaking moment arrived when he swept part-time spinner Joe Root for a boundary, marking his century in style.

“His batting has been phenomenal. It’s incredible to watch him play, and as a captain, he’s been exceptional. He has a clear vision for the team, and we are confident in our approach,” Jaiswal remarked about Gill.

Gill and Jadeja remained at the crease until the umpires called stumps, with India finishing the first day at 310/5 after 85 overs.
