Bengaluru Faces Challenges Due to Unprecedented Rainfall: Government Response

Impact of Heavy Rainfall in Bengaluru
Bengaluru has been significantly affected by unexpected rainfall, leading to widespread difficulties across various neighborhoods. In light of this, Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has provided updates on the city's flood management efforts.
Flood Management Progress
Speaking from the BBMP war room, Shivakumar informed that out of 210 identified flood-prone areas in Bengaluru, 70% have seen resolutions. He stated, "We identified 210 flood-affected zones. Since taking office as the Bengaluru Development Minister, we have addressed issues in 166 of these locations. Currently, work is ongoing in 24 areas, and actions will soon commence in the remaining 20. Additionally, 197 kilometers of stormwater drainage systems have been constructed as part of flood prevention measures."
Traffic Management and Infrastructure Investment
The Deputy Chief Minister also mentioned that traffic police have identified 132 problematic spots prone to flooding during heavy rains. "We have resolved issues in 82 of these locations, while work is pending in the remaining 41," he added. The government has allocated ₹2,000 crores for enhancing stormwater drainage infrastructure. Shivakumar emphasized that while the government cannot control the rain, it is actively addressing the issues within its reach. He reassured the public that there is no need for panic, although he acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, referencing a tragic incident where a wall collapse during the rain resulted in a woman's death.
Response to Opposition Criticism
In response to opposition criticism claiming Bengaluru has turned into 'Water Bengaluru', Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar challenged critics to engage in constructive dialogue. "They cannot just attack and run away. Let them present their list of grievances—we are ready to showcase the progress made in resolving issues throughout the city," he stated.
