Initially, engineer David Mah developed the prototype, which Meyer later refined. Drawing from Dordle, where players solve two grids at once, Quordle was launched in February 2022 and quickly gained a million players within weeks.

Merriam-Webster purchased Quordle in January 2023 for an undisclosed amount, with company president Greg Barlow noting its popularity among employees and its potential to enhance the site's game offerings.
