In a remarkable return to international football, Sunil Chhetri played a pivotal role in India's impressive 3-0 win over the Maldives during a friendly match held on Wednesday. This victory marked the end of India's 12-match winless run that began in November 2023.

India took the lead in the 35th minute thanks to Rahul Bheke's goal, followed by Liston Colaco doubling the score in the 66th minute.

The 40-year-old Chhetri, who had previously retired from international duty in May last year, made his comeback memorable by scoring the third goal with a deft header in the 77th minute, bringing his total to 95 international goals.

Chhetri, who had a close chance thwarted by the Maldives goalkeeper just after halftime, was substituted in the 82nd minute.
