Riyan Parag to Captain Rajasthan Royals in Initial IPL Matches

In a significant development for the Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag has been appointed as captain for the team's first three matches in IPL 2025. This decision comes as regular captain Sanju Samson recovers from finger surgery. Parag, at just 23, will lead the team against formidable opponents like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings. While Samson will still contribute as a batter, he is expected to return to his captaincy role once fully fit. This change marks an exciting chapter for the Royals as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Riyan Parag Takes the Helm for Rajasthan Royals

Emerging talent Riyan Parag is set to captain the Rajasthan Royals for their first three matches in the IPL, as regular skipper Sanju Samson has been advised by the BCCI to refrain from wicket-keeping duties following finger surgery.

Samson suffered a fractured finger after being struck by a delivery from Jofra Archer during a T20 International against England in Mumbai, necessitating a minor surgical procedure last month.

While he has been cleared to bat, the medical and sports science teams at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru have recommended additional rest for his fingers before he resumes wicket-keeping.

This situation allows Parag, at just 23 years old, to become one of the youngest captains in IPL history. Virat Kohli currently holds the record, having captained RCB at the age of 22.

In an official statement, the Rajasthan Royals confirmed, “Riyan Parag will lead the team for the first three matches of IPL 2025.”

The young all-rounder will debut as captain in the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23, followed by home games against the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 and the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings on March 30.

Samson, a vital player for the Royals, will continue to contribute with the bat until he is cleared for wicket-keeping and fielding duties. He is expected to return as captain once fully fit and may serve as an impact substitute during these initial matches.
