Neeraj Chopra's Insights on His Relationship with Arshad Nadeem

Doha [Qatar], May 15: India's Olympic gold medalist and World Champion javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, recently shared his thoughts on his relationship with Arshad Nadeem, the reigning champion from Pakistan, as both nations face ongoing tensions. He admitted that their relationship is not particularly strong.

Neeraj is set to compete in the Doha Diamond League this Friday, where he will be the main attraction at the Qatar Sports Club.

During a press conference prior to the event, Neeraj stated, "I want to clarify that I do not have a very strong relationship with Nadeem." He emphasized the importance of respect among athletes, saying, "If someone speaks to me with respect, I will reciprocate in kind."

He acknowledged that the recent border tensions have affected his relationship with Nadeem, adding, "It won't be like it was before. Respect is key in any interaction."

Following the Pahalgam terror attack, Neeraj faced criticism for inviting Nadeem to the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 in Bengaluru, which has been postponed due to the current situation between the two countries.

Neeraj has a competitive edge over Nadeem, having won 9 out of their 10 encounters since 2016.

In response to the backlash, Neeraj clarified that his invitation to Nadeem was simply a gesture between athletes, stating, "There was nothing more to it." He expressed his frustration over the negative attention directed at him and his family, saying, "I am a man of few words, but I will speak out against what I believe is wrong, especially when it concerns my love for my country and my family's honor."

Neeraj explained that the invitations were sent out just before the tragic incident, emphasizing that the goal of the NC Classic was to showcase top athletes in India. He stated, "Invitations were sent two days before the attacks, and after what happened, having Arshad at the event was out of the question. My country's interests will always come first."

He expressed his condolences to those affected by the recent violence, stating, "My thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones. I share the nation's hurt and anger over these events."

Neeraj also addressed the criticism aimed at him and his family, feeling hurt by the false narratives being spread. He stated, "I have represented my country with pride for many years, and it pains me to see my integrity questioned. We are simple people, and I ask that we not be misrepresented."

After Nadeem's victory over Neeraj at the Paris Olympics, Neeraj's mother had referred to Nadeem as a "son". Neeraj noted the backlash his mother has faced for her innocent comment, which was once praised.

He concluded by expressing his commitment to ensuring that India is recognized globally for all the right reasons, saying, "I will work even harder to make sure the world remembers India with respect. Jai Hind."
